Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am glad to be back. Had a 914, 87 911 turbo and a 2001 996TT. Its been may years but back again with a 2002 996. Attached is my car. I like what the previous owner did with the headlights. Looks nice.

POST 2Original post

Welcome back! I like the wheels and the side logo. Fresh retro look. Congrats.

Looks great. To me the headlight covers are ok but up close some look cheap and/or off color. But your Fuchs styled wheels look great! I've got a black cab and have thought of getting those wheels along with a "Carrera" script rocker sticker like your "PORSCHE" version. Why? Because it's that "80's" look I grew up with.

POST 4Original post

I prefer not altering the look of the 996 headlights, because it implies that something is wrong with the design. The longer I own my 996.1, the more I like the headlights. They flow perfectly with the cars shape. Nice car, though.

POST 5Original post

Of the 20+ total strangers that have made unsolicited comments to me about my 996 in 2 years of ownership, ZERO said anything about the headlights. Obviously a personal choice but they are what separates our 911s from all others. Nice rims and script.

POST 6Original post

I just happened to take this picture few days ago. 997.2 4s next to 996 4s.

Headlights are great just the way they came out of the factory, but I must admit the front bumper cover on a 996 C4S is the best front bumper cover ever! That is just the swoopiest front end Porsche ever designed.

^^^^^^^^^^^ - No need to hide those headlights any longer. These cars are aging like fine wine.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 17336905

I don't care for the headlamp covers either but I would love to see some more pics of the wheels.

Covering headlights is just letting the sheep win. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the headlights, but if you don't say they are ugly you aren't part of the cool kids club. The irony is that it's always cooler not to follow the crowd.

Quotes source post: 17336905

Welcome back. Love the wheels. Mixed on the covers. I have had my 02 996 for 19 years. Bought the car and didn't give the lights a second thought. In fact I liked them at the time and still do. Funny thing is that the 996 has aged extremely well in looks. And the headlight bitchin and moaning that goes on is similar to training a bird how to repeat certain sentences. They repeat the sentence but have no idea what they are talking about. You made a great choice in getting into the 996 club. Be proud of your car. You done good! And yes, show us more pictures of your wheels!

POST 12Original post

I think the 996.2 headlights are some of the best looking headlights designed. The fried egg moniker came from 996.1 with the bottom half amber. People continued using that name for the later generations but they look nothing like eggs.

POST 13Original post

Those covers remind me of the Lone Ranger. They gotta go.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 17337662

996.1 headlights > 996.2 headlights IMO

POST 15Original post

My car had paint to match TechArt headlight covers when I bought it. first thing I removed.

POST 16Original post

I heard the term runny egg headlights. Does that refer to the 996.2? So, is it true to say 996.1 = fried egg, 996.2 = runny egg?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 17337790

For me, the 996.2 headlights with the standard bumper don't do it. It looks odd somehow. They only work with the 4S bumper. But I prefer the 996.1 headlights, they just look so timeless.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 17337937

Early 99's and maybe some early build 00's have yellow on the bottom for turn indicators instead of fully clear, which to me is the only "egg" headlight. The rest of us must be on a diet with only having egg whites.

POST 19Original post

And then besides the 996, there were other 911s that had unusual headlights. (and quite unsightly)

POST 20Original post

Welcome back! having already owned these cars before, there's no need to tell you how fun they are, or how much it will cost you to get them sorted to your liking. Headlights are headlights, turn them on and drive !

POST 21Original post

I liked the slant nose 911's, liked the regular ones from the eighties too. Nostalgia from when I was a kid. Those are out of my reach financially anyway. I can get past my headlights because the rest of the car works for me.

POST 22Original post

Do what I did and buy a second set of lights. Then you can change back and forth whenever you want. I had a coworker ask how many 911s I owned. He noticed my headlight were different between “two of them.” Adding side skirts and taco spoiler may have also confused him.

POST 23Original post

I think your headlight covers look great. Covers work especially well with dark colors, like black. PS - I also think the original design looks great. If you dare to post a car with headlight covers in front of fans of the 996, youll get flames. Evidence above ^^^ But non-996 fans either think thats how its supposed to be, or they will like it, or most likely not care at all. Really, only 996 fans dislike it. I say keep your car with the covers if thats what you like. Dont be swayed by comments.

I dig this a lot! I think a lot of times, there are negative perceptions of 996 headlight covers due to cheap and ugly eBay stick-on options. This is not that! 🙂

POST 25Original post

Agree, that's the good thing about them. Easy upgrade. Looks better. Cheap. And saves weight I guess.

Wow, you have been a serious long time lurker on RL by waiting 17 years to write your first post! I'm not sure if that is a record or not but it is an impressive stat nonetheless. Good luck with your new 996. I'd love to hear your driving impressions of the car compared to your previous 996TT. +1

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car came with the headlights like this and not sure if they can be undone - they were painted at a body shop to match. I would not have done them but I don't mind them. I do like the retro wheels and logos.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Agreed and when I am driving its, its all smiles. I miss my 87 turbo but this is just as fun and has not tried to kill me yet (although I an older and wiser)

This is my car in the add. I can snap some more if interested. I see you have a few BMWs, I also have a 1976 2002. Was going to add more power to it and decided to buy this instead and keep it vintage.

POST 30Original post

Absolutely, post some more. Love to see a side shot. Wheels look very good.
