Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

38 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Outcome without a verified action link

It seems that a solid well sorted 1987 Carrera coupe with the snoby G50 transmission is still not near good enough to the apparently "holy grail" of Porsches (the 993)...

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So bored at work and have been binge watching Californication. The guys drives a beat up 964 Cab - and it looks cool. So started looking at 964's. Go to the Rennlist forum to get some information and one of the top 3 recent posts was about whether 993 guys look down on 964 guys and the 964 guys defending their car.

POST 2Original post

Spoiler alert....the 964 gets updated in a later season.

POST 3Original post

Air cooled 911 owners look down on everyone. Because driving a lawnmower is the pinnacle of automotive ownership. All owners of Porsche cars look down on Cayenne owners. Because SUVs are, you know, really unpopular in this country. Cayenne owners have the new pleasure of mocking Macan drivers. Because "mine's bigger." All Porsche owners, including Cayenne owners, look down on Panamera owners. Panamera owners look down on everyone else. This is probably due to poor eyesight, which is in turn at least partially responsible for their Panamera ownership. Water-cooled 911 owners deal with their air-cooled angst by mocking Boxster owners and Corvette owners. Corvette owners probably mock something, too, but you have to show up for the early bird special at Denny's to learn what this might be. Boxster owners deal with this the best way they can...retail therapy. They also mock people whose belts and shoes are mismatched. 911 owners don't really mock Cayman owners because (a) they cannot process the concept of a mid-engine coupe, and (b) mocking the Cayman would involve agreeing with Jeremy Clarkson, which is in itself NOT consistent with owning a 911.

To help clarify this complex relationship, I have provided a flowchart:

POST 6Original post

Every forum I have been on (not just cars but also bikes, watches, etc.)..... someone always "hates" on somebody else. Example: Sportsters get no love in the Harley forum. Biggest surprise thus far...VESPA scooter owners bashing P-car owners. And Hayabusa sportbikes. Go figure....yup, true story

POST 7Original post

Would you not be insecure if you are driving a car that was advertised like this?

POST 8Original post

5HCN3LL hit it on the head. Well done good sir.

POST 9Original post

Ha! Lol at the flow chart! Corvette owners hate on mustang owners because mustang owners secretly wish they had a real American sports car too not just a pony car. I know because I too have been a corvette owner. And a camaro And a SUV owner. And a BMW owner And ...... Btw I was checking out a X5M that I really loved but I kinda too afraid to own out of warrantee last night and this wicked sounding exhaust note drove by. The seller and I looked up and watched this black turbo Macan with dealer plates drive out of the parking lot. Very cool. Ok back to bashing whoever it is we look down on. Was it the air cooler lawnmower guys?

That and Schnell observations are dead on... And I'd like to add my personal experience especially since I just recently acquired my first air-cooled 911 (1987 Carrera coupe) to keep my 2004 40th Anniversary company... So I thought that finally owning a pristine air-cooled 911 would absolve and forgive the deadly sin I committed when I purchased my water pumper 996 about 11 years ago... Heck I was young and dumb and didn't understand what a "real" Porsche is all about back then... Right?!?... Wrong!... To a point... It seems that amongst owners from early 911s to 964s I'm now accepted and sin has been forgiven... But not the case with a great majority of 993 owners I've encountered just recently (and I shall clarify that these particular 993 owners are also recent owners). It seems that a solid well sorted 1987 Carrera coupe with the snoby G50 transmission is still not near good enough to the apparently "holy grail" of Porsches (the 993)... Oh Well... my only saving grace then is that at least I learned from my initial mistake... I did buy the black sheep of water-cooled 911s, but at least I didn't buy a 964 or black sheep of air-cooled 911s... (And don't get me wrong every type of 911 has a spot in my heart)... So is it only some 993 owners who are insecure?...

POST 12Original post

Having owned both a Boxster and a Corvette simultaneously, I have been placed in the unfortunate situation of threatening to kick my own *** under suspicion of being "ghey." Fortunately, I was unable to catch myself since the Boxster is so good in the corners. I hid out from me in the nail salon parking lot until I lost interest trying to find myself and settled for wing night at Hooters. Crisis averted until I slip up and order a Pabst Blue Ribbon with an absinthe chaser.

POST 14Original post

Yes I'm insecure. The way my engine is cooled and the frivolous way my 996 is compared to other 911's hurts me. I try and trick the girlfriends but at night time when I try too sleep it's not easy

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I read through some of the posts and they are literally the same arguments I read here. Both cars were claimed at one point to be "the last real 911", the first "daily driver 911", the AC "worked", they did not overheat like the old ones. Then there were comments about the front end, back end, or fenders not looking right. But I know the 996 is really all of those things. BTW - flow chart killed me, and this post was worth it because we got another schnell classic.

POST 17Original post

Ever since the 356 was ready to be replaced by the SWB 901, owners have been bellyaching about the newer Porsche design being too easy to drive, too comfortable, and how it lost it's connection with driving. Who really cares what the naysayers say. Almost every newer Porsche introduced has been superior than the one preceding it through Porsche evolution.

Correct. It was constant improvement until the 996. The 996 was the peak of performance without having too much electronic interference. Since then it has been all down hill. Wait. I think I have heard the argument before somewhere.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 12242889

You got that right. Every Porsche forum (except the Cayenne forum) claims that their model is the last true Porsche, the last real sports car, etc. All the new cars are just a luxury GT. The 996 guys say it about the 997. The 997 guys say it about the 991. The 991 guys will say it about the 992.

POST 21Original post

Everyone knows that the last TRUE Porsche was the 914...

Having visited the Corvette forums on occasion - they mostly hate all things Porsche! The favorite reference being, 'a bug that's been stepped on', and the fact that the Corvette is faster in the quarter mile. And anyone who professes a liking for Porsche is pretty much vibed out.

POST 26Original post

Why, did someone tell you we're insecure? Who was it? What else did they say?

Speaking of flow charts, 996 owners are among the Privileged Class, as we are blessed with the IMSB issue. IMSB decision-making flow chart: .
