I just checked several YouTube videos on rolling, plus the Porsche site u gave, and I am sure I can do it.

I used a heat gun on 120F setting (I have a temp gauge as well) and rubber covered socket extension wedged against the top of the tire and took a lot of time doing it on the front.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I might be having clearance problems with my new rear wheels (02 Targa).
I have seen many of you talk about rolling your fenders, as though you do it yourselves and as if it's not a big deal.
Can I do this myself, and will it require a re-paint? I do almost all the work on my car, so mechanical work is not alien to me.
I think there is a rolling tool??
Any info appreciated.
Thanks Lucy.
I have to roll my rear fenders (front done). The rear edge of the fenders on my car is really close - one finger away from tire contact on the outside edge. My car is lowered and I have new rims which were a hair different then the stock wheels. Over bumps I make slight contact.
Rolling the fenders requires the heating up of the inside edge of the metal on the fenders and bending them gently in towards the car and continuing the bending upwards. This is so the sharp edge is moved away from the tires. You have to use just the right amount of heat so that the metal bends without cracking the paint but making sure you don't use too much heat. I used a heat gun on 120F setting (I have a temp gauge as well) and rubber covered socket extension wedged against the top of the tire and took a lot of time doing it on the front. There are tools which I might consider this time around.
Thanks for the input. Worries about the heat and rolling for the first time, on this car. Technique seems to be key. It's not a car I want to practice on.
Maybe I should roll the fenders on our minivan first, huh.
The wheels I want to use have an ET of 40 (rears). I think stock is 52?
Guess I should just bite the bullet and take one hour to give the wheel a bolt-on trial, huh.
Yah, that's what I'm worried about.
So, the rolling is ONLY over the area of the fender that might come into contact with the wheel, rather than the entire fender....
You can do it yourself, but please rent a fender roller and get yourself a heat gun. The baseball bat rolls don't turn out so well, especially since the 996's rear fenders are stout.
There's a TSB out there somewhere for fender rolling a 996 - Google "996 fender roll TSB" or other similar variations to find it.

Great info. I just checked several YouTube videos on rolling, plus the Porsche site u gave, and I am sure I can do it.
Major points: careful heat, go slowly and do it in increments.
Any other cautions or pointers?
EBay selling the tool for about $65, free shipping. I think the rental on eBay is $37. Might just buy one.
The rental site previously mentioned looks like they charge a lot extra for the Porsche adapter. Can't figure out if it is refundable.
