Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have checked the drop links and everything appears to be ok there.

I have recently had the inner and outer tie-rods replaced on my 2002 C4S due to a clunking sound when driving on uneven surfaces.

It looks like the movement is within the boots, indicating that it could be the inner tie rods, but because they have been replaced I am expecting that they are not the fault.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have recently had the inner and outer tie-rods replaced on my 2002 C4S due to a clunking sound when driving on uneven surfaces. The new tie-rods seamed to cure the clunk, but now 4 weeks later, the clunk is back. With the car on a lift, I checked the play at 3 and 9 o'clock, and 6 and 12 o'clock. There's no play on the 6 - 12 orientation, but the 3 - 9 orientation has about 1/8" of play on both sides, and I hear the clunking when it reaches each end of the play. It looks like the movement is within the boots, indicating that it could be the inner tie rods, but because they have been replaced I am expecting that they are not the fault. I have checked the drop links and everything appears to be ok there.
Are there any other components on the steering rack assembly that this issue could be associated with?
Is it possible for the shop to have not installed the inner tie-rods correctly?
Any other suggestions on what to look at to further diagnose this?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I am betting the inner joint was not replaced.
Now I have never looked at the 996 rack but ALL OTHER Porsches I have worked on the inner joint is part of the arm and is plenty spendy.

I'm hoping they were!!. I bought the parts, inner tie-rods (996 347 322 03), outer tie-rods (996-347-131-04) and new boots (996-347-011-06) and had a local reputable garage do the install and alignment. It sure does feel like the inners are shot?? These were OEM TRW units from Pelican.
Yes, I would take it back to them and have them check it. There's no reason why you need to exert any effort or the forums effort on a mistake someone else might've done, especially when you paid a pro to do it right the first time.
I will be taking the car back for them to check it. My reason for posting is to learn if anyone has experienced another component that could exert the same play in the wheels. Maybe there is a common fault in the steering rack assembly for example...I've searched but nothing comes up. Just trying to better arm myself for when I take the car back in.
If it were me I would put a sharpie mark on all 6 spring clips holding the belly pan on. But that is just me not trusting shops to do anything they say. I have several good friends that turn wrenches for a living and even they say there are some real knuckle draggers out there.
Problem with inner joint is the bellows has to come off to even check to see if it was screwed in tight. not to mention if it is failing at the socket. BIG PITA.
Yes I wrench on my own car.
