Suggestion
You can disconnect the reverse lights switch connector and jumper the two pins to see if the reverse lights come on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone, while being unable to get the passenger mirror to dip with the setting in reverse advice, I noticed no back up lights where out as well. Being the type of guy that cant rest whens something is broken I started researching this forum. Saw some good posts on the actual switch, replace vs repair but not to much on how to remove the Tiptronic center console itself. Looks like a very good risk vs reward do it yourself project. Anyone have a little more detail on how to remove the Tiptronic center console specifically? Last project I took on was replacing the bad screen in the climate control. Videos on it where great so Im hoping for the same with replacing or repairing the switch.
tiptronic centre console is exactly the same as the manual. Only difference in the shifter.
You can disconnect the reverse lights switch connector and jumper the two pins to see if the reverse lights come on. If they do come on, the miss is in the switch.
The below pic was taken while I was researching the reverse light wiring during my tip--->manual swap.

Thanks for replying! Great idea on the jumper. I saw the one post on how to get the shift **** off, push up to expose the retainer. Once the **** is off does the plate underneath come up with the console or does what appears to be two pieces pop off together or in separate pieces.
Once the **** is removed, carefully pry with a plastic trim removal tool the cover.
That may not get you the access you need, then you'll need to take the whole center console out.
Thank you both. Confidence is up, cars a keeper so I decided to order the switch from Pelican. Found some more how too videos and diagrams on taking down the shifter as well as the center console. Looks like I will need to remove the lower panel where the heated seat switches are for clearance to tilt up the dust cover on the shifter. One source said to disconnect the battery prior to starting another to leave it on to see if it works. What you recommend?
That panel with the heated seat switches stays in place. Once you pop the shifter cover and **** off, put the shifter in Drive to get the console out (after you remove all of the screws and 2 harness clips)....
A trick I learned to remove the console; lower and lean the passenger seat back as far as it will go and then remove the trim piece between the handbrake lever and seat belt buckle. Then you can finagle the center console up and out.
Thought I couldn’t take it out of neutral since the purpose was to change the backup switch and it may forget what gear it was in? I read it had to be in neutral when changing the switch. Or do I leave in drive, remove the ****, remove the console, then but the **** back on, place in neutral, before I replace the switch? While remembering to pull the pin out of new switch with vehicle in neutral? Whew.
I don't think it matters what gear the selector is in really. I don't remember too much about it but you can turn the switch pretty easily, I remember doing it when trying to code the tiptronic cluster. You can move the gearshift without the **** as well. It's just not easy on the thumb, but doable!
I think it will make more sense once you get the console off and see the switch on the left side of the shifter.

I think I’ve watched that one once a day for a week now. It’s what’s giving me the confidence to try something new. Part came in today so I plan on taking it on this weekend. Thanks again for your support!
Love tinkering, its the switch for arm rest. second cut out by latch Once I found the rest of the bracket that holds it in place, I figured out how it aligned.
I color matched the ashtray cover at Home Depot with a flat matte latex enamel w/primer one coat paint. A Behr paint. Another renlister mentioned it so I tried it. Did 4 coats with a small white, for cabinets 4 paint roller. Used steel wool between coats to obtain the texture. Used about a half jar so plenty left over for touch ups. I tried to just fill in the scratches at first. Color was a good match but the luster on the finish was off just a tad so I did it all. The longer it dried, the better it looks.
