I am assuming that once the CD storage is removed, that there is probably a hole that goes back to the wiring, and thus, some type of insert will need to replace the removed CD storage.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know how to remove the CD storage trays from the center console? I never use it, and would like to free up this space for additional storage. Also, once removed, is anyone aware of an aftermarket product that can be inserted into that space? I am assuming that once the CD storage is removed, that there is probably a hole that goes back to the wiring, and thus, some type of insert will need to replace the removed CD storage. I haven't been able to find anything on the aftermarket, which amazes me, because I can't imagine that a lot of folks still use the CD (or cassette tape) storage trays, given the popularity of MP3 players. Thanks in advance for any information/assistance you can provide.

POST 2Original post

To remove the CD storage, basicall you just need to pop the console panel on each side and then remove the CD storage tray. Not sure if you already have a cup holder or not. But you could move your HVAC control unit down and place a cup holder tray there instead.

POST 3Original post

just extend (pop out) all the cd holders, and yank... it will come right out. no need to remove any panels! you can purchase the cd holder insert from the dealer, it is ~$30. One of the first things I did with my 996. Good luck!

POST 4Original post

1) Search function should be working on Rennlist and Renntech.org. I'm certain this has been discussed, and is the subject of numerous DIY's. [I don't mind, but lots of members believe that redundant posts are annoying ]. 2) Virtually everything in the interior basically pops of (little clips) or unscrews with a T20 torx (there are a few exceptions) 3) For the CD tray, just pull off the side panels (a medium tug), and then pull out the storage tray (medium hard tug) and the CD tray should then be accessible to pull out (light tug). 4) You can put in another storage tray - order it from Sunset Imports or ebay for around 20 bucks. Many people have double storage bins... Again, the search function might assist you. 5) Everything you pulled out, will just push back in. You can swap your CD storage for a new bin in less than 5 minutes. -td

POST 5Original post

FYI, if you have the OEM digital sound unit, it does need to be unscrewed first, but it comes out very easily. As for the side panels, like everyone said: just grab them from behind and pull out perpendicularly.

POST 7Original post

JHL, if you're interested in selling the unit once you have it out let me know. Shawn

POST 8Original post

Agreed, no need to remove any panels. Extend all of the cd drawers, grab them and pull. The whole unit comes out, takes 8.2 seconds. I installed a second storage bin (shelf unit) in place of the CD holder.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've always been a reader of the Rennlist forum, and it's always been a good source of information. However, I didn't know that there was a search function, and after going through 15 pages of topics without finding any related info, I decided to register, and post my question. Thus, apologies for starting a duplicative thread. Thank you all very much for your responses, especially to rcg412 for saving me the trouble of removing the side consoles. I was amazed at how easily the CD holder came out. I just got back from my Porsche dealer, and installed the $40 replacement bin. Wow! Talk about a helpful forum! Thanks again. P.S. Ubermensch: I'll probably hang onto it, in case I decide to sell the car, and the new buyer wants the CD holder. By the way, I saw one for sale on ebay this morning. Here is the link (not sure if it will work). Or, just type in "911 CD holder" into the ebay search: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/01-Po...spagenameZWDVW

POST 10Original post

Why would you move the HVAC control down to add cup holders? I removed the cupholders to move the HVAC up, so I could put something useful in.

POST 11Original post

Well... after 10 years of 933 ownership without a cup holder I bought a 996 just so I can have a cup holder. Hope people see the humor in that.....

POST 12Original post

I put sirius radio in that spot, looks great. I will post pics but here is a stock example. I but mine from The Sirius Store . They are currently on back order for the DIN face adapter, so I ordered it from Circuit City.

POST 13Original post

8.2 seconds? You lyin' man; you ain't never met no Martin Luther the King.

POST 14Original post

Edward - Sorry, but I don't understand your statement. Care to enlighten me?

POST 15Original post

Sorry, Tim. It's a line from "Coming to America" with Eddie Murphy. Maybe a bit of a stretch, but I was just laughing along with you in having finished your repair in eight point two seconds. Great precision.

POST 16Original post

Edward - I thought it was probably something like that, but I couldn't "place" the phrase or quote.

POST 17Original post

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I'm looking to fit one of these and can't find any help anywhere, I currently have nothing there and it's just the carpet.... Any help would be greatly received Thanks

POST 18Original post

Do a search for center console delete. It was an option or a DIY. Then just reverse the process - I assume.

POST 19Original post

If you dont want your cup holder above your electronics you can download this file http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:292359 and have someone print it out on a 3D printer. I designed it for my 99 but it should fit any model with a console ashtray. Remove ashtray 2.3 seconds, insert cup holder 2.1 seconds. If you want to move your climate control down as shown in the image you will need this kit from Suncoast parts. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product..._Code=996intup This is an extra storage bin that fits perfectly into the space where the CD holder is. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product..._Code=996intup

POST 20Original post

I haven't found any pics of anyone who relocated the cup holders to the lower section where the Cd tray was. The cup holders look larger than the CD tray. Does it definitely fit in that location fine?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 14271843

I actually don't think that's even possible and most likely why there are no images of it. You've also bumped a 10+ year old thread FYI

POST 22Original post

Quotes source posts: 14272011, 3667173

I found a tread on 6peedonline where one guy relocate the cup holder. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...tml?styleid=26 BTW, the 10+ year tread actually had great information for my 10+ year car, which is better than starting a new tread about the exact same topic.

POST 23Original post

Assuming you mean thread and not tread... Okay I see, so then they can be moved on a MK1. Good luck with the project

Colorado Bob May I know what is this square things on the top left of your center console picture for? I have the same head unit and switch as yours but i do not know what is the switch for.

POST 25Original post

Looks like it might be a microphone rather than a switch?

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 16795043

I thought the microphone is the one on the left which i have it as well, no?

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 16795091

Yes you're right - couldn't see that on my phone - maybe a call answer button? Have you read the manual for the headunit?

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 16795185

Yep, you are right! I googled for a installation manual and that button is for call answer.

POST 29Original post

I have a perfect cd holder I just removed from my '99 C2 if anyone is interested in buying it. PM me Never saw the replacement storage tray (996-552-243-01) for under $60 at a dealer....

POST 30Original post

Ooh. I have a perfect cassette holder that goes in the storage tray location! PM me!!

POST 31Original post

Loving the history within this thread - mentions of MP3 players and Circuit City. I do have a legit reason for posting, albeit perhaps covered by other threads I cannot find yet. Can the HVAC unit be relocated to 2nd from bottom slot (where the CD/cassette holder are factory located)? Everyone I've seen adjust the order puts the HVAC at the 4th (bottom) slot with a trim kit. I'd like to put it where the CD storage slot is.

POST 32Original post

I am loving this thread, too. Just pull out all the CD trays and yank on them to remove the CD shelf ... by far the easiest thing I have ever done in 23 years as a Porsche owner! Removing the CD shelf because I had the Porsche Classic dual-DIN upgrade installed which renders the CD player obsolete. Which also means I have a perfectly good 996 OEM nav system and CD changer which are now surplus to requirements. PM me if you are interested in this kind of used gear. Today, the stereo upgrade. Tomorrow, the chip tuning! Onward!
