2) the clutch has a very faint squeak but it engages fine and at the right time - so I'll probably have it checked during the 30K service just in case.

3) the speedo reads 6 mph faster than the real speed - for about an hr into my drive I couldn't figure out why people in Oregon were drive so dam fast, finally I doubled checked the speed on Waze and then I figured it out.

- Replaced the IMS and Clutch just because I'm a nervous new owner
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

HI Folks, Just joined the club and am really excited. I picked up a 2002 996 narrow body with 36K miles. Drove it from Portal OR to Dallas TX over the weekend and had a blast! I know there are lots of opinions out there on first mods, but I was curious if this sounds realistic to get it to be a reliable weekend driver. 1) IMS upgrade, 2) 30K service since it was never done, 3) Porsche PCCM + upgrade, 4) headlight and tail light LED upgrade, 5) new tires (still has the original rubber) + balance and alignment. Do these sound right, is there anything I'm missing?
Welcome to the world of 996 ownership!
1. PCCM - If youre looking for a high quality state of the art double din unit, and you also want high quality sound reproduction then dont buy this very expensive inferior sounding, limited function Volkswagen product.
2. IMS - If you havent done a bore scope yet I would suggest you start with that. Wait until you need a new clutch and then do the IMS with it.
3. Youre going to get a lot of feedback from others about LEDs on a 996. They will detract from the authentic look and the inherent value of the car. But just like aftermarket wheels its really a personal preference and taste. You might want to consider just putting LED headlights in the OEM housing instead, but even then you may get feedback from others on the pros and cons.
I would urge you to spend your first few months driving it, making sure there arent other mechanical repairs that need tending to. For example what are the date codes on your tires? If they are more than 5-6 years old you absolutely need to buy new tiresnow.
Post some pics, and check out another recent thread about car audio. There you will find some great ideas on what others have done. Including yours truly. I just got done replacing the factory audio system with an aftermarket system that absolutely kicks ***. 🎉
Thank you for the quick replies! The 35 hour drive to pick it up gave me some time to hear and feel the bugs that needed to get worked out. 1) new rubber and alignment is a must - it had a very slight shimmy in the wheel which drove me nuts. Surprisingly the drive back wasn't bad, the car came with a hard top which cut down on the highway noise, but once I get a chance that sucker is coming off and stored away. I had a pre-purchase inspection done to the car and they provided a video. Here's the video if you're interested. I'll get some pics real soon - promise.

This car will probably be a daily driver option so a track suspension is probably out the cards for now. Again, I know there are lots of opinions out there for preference, buy I would be interested in your thoughts for some good tires.
I am far from the expert, but new rubber and service/suspension refresh makes sound sense to me. Save the cosmetics for a few months down the road and then go crazy once you know your baby
I updated all my lights to LEDs and love the upgraded look now, but it took me a while to get there (as well as interior upgrades & roll bar). Have fun, that's what it's all about!!!!!! Nice ride.
New rubber right away, Don't let them fail on you at highway speed. You are brave to drive that distance on 20 year old rubber. You must be naturally lucky.
Headlights; No drawbacks to going LED. I have aftermarket LED housings on mine and they update the look so much that I have had 2 people mistake the car as new. (she was nice and shiny that day, but I am convinced that the headlights made the difference)
No drawbacks, as you can just keep the original housings and if you ever need to put them back on, you can.
Welcome to the club.
Great suggestions - thank you all! Everyone seems to agree on the exhaust, I guess I need to look into it. Icelia - I've always had good luck on the long drive home, its the local trips where I get screwed.
Now the question is what kind of MODs should I get (brands)?
Tires? (daily driver, prefer quiet and comfortable)
Exhaust? Sounds like Fister is the way to go
Suspension? What do you guys suggest I get done? It rides well but I'm sure a 20 yr old car needs something new in the suspension dept...
LED Lights? for the lights, I found these - thoughts?

Tires - Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 Plus High Performance All Season. Hands down the best if you factor in price, life span, ride quality, handling, and low noise. Read reviews on Tire Rack to confirm what I said
Congrats on the car, just realize that you bought a 20 year old car, take care of all service items before considering mods. Then drive and enjoy the car, you will figure out what you want as you spend time in the car.
TIRES -Michelin Pilots Sport 4S DO NOT DRIVE ON 20 YEAR OLD TIRES
Do all maintenance before any mods. I would not be as concerned about mileage as age of components
Change all Fluids
Cabin and air filters
Have all hoses inspected and replaced. I would proactivley change coolant and brake lines
Water Pump & belt - these have a 4 year life
IMS
Motor Mounts
anything else that comes up
If you plan on tracking the car a deep sump, search for the UIDS thread on Rennlist
Full detail for the car including paint correction
Fister Exhaust - I cannot say how much this transforms the experience.
Suspension, These two kits show what's needed
, also get new top hats for the 4 corners, sway bar links. Then add
coilovers if needed/wanted, Feal and Ohlins seem to be the top choices

Short Shift Kit
New Shifter **** - I went with one from Manny Campuzano

HI Folks, I took your suggestions and the car is in the shop getting these things done:
Changing all Fluids
Cabin and air filters
Water Pump & belt
IMS and clutch
Motor Mounts
PCCM+ upgrade
Only thing left (at the moment - car isn't out of the shop yet) is new tires. I was thinking about new wheels too if I'm replacing tires. if I choose to go for 19s, is there a specific size, fitment, style I should be looking for? I found these online but I'm not sure if these will fit my 2002 c2 narrow without additional modifications. any input is totally appreciated!

I love all these new cabriolet owners. Wow only 36k miles?! I'm restoring a 2002 as well and having it bored up to a 4.0 via LNE. Be sure to check out my channel, link below, to see what the interior looks like underneath and how to resolve issues with your top. Once the case comes back i'll be putting all back together myself. Welcome!
Bore scope it while your there,, get a Durametric printout as well, Its you baseline for condition
The pre-purchase was all cosmetic without a bottom side bore scope and a Pwis or Duramtric check..
Twin to my 03 C4S, Good luck with the car.. (My notes above are for future searchers..
HI Folks, Quick update: Been loving the car as a daily driver and took off the hard top - love the car much more with that top off but I'm glad I've got it. Took your advice and have been driving it to get a feel to what I'd like to have done.
Here's what's been done so far:
- 40K service (all fluids/filters/belt/coolant/brake flush/etc) - mechanic said it was great condition
- replaced the alternator as it was starting to fail
- new wheels (black 19s) and tires (took your advice and got the Michelins - love them!)
- Had the passenger window fixed as it was no longer lowering when the door was opened
- Replaced the IMS and Clutch just because I'm a nervous new owner
- Installed the Porsche PCCM+ radio (totally not worth it - I should have listened, newbie mistake)
Now that it's running well and I'm less stressed about the unknowns of the car I've been thinking about the other mods you mentioned like the Fister exhaust and the suspension upgrade. BTW - DAM YOU ALL FOR PLANTING THOSE SEEDS IN MY HEAD!
Since we have a three day weekend I was going to hit the monthly Mayo Porsche meet and greet here in the DFW area. Any local rennlist folks heading up there?
