not sure if you can replace the fat injectors with the newer skinny ones and was wondering if anyone knew if there would be a fitment problem if a buy a new skinny one instead of a new fat injector since they are harder to find.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

hello everyone,
got a 2001 3.4L and car has been giving me a miss fire on cyl 5 when reaching the redline on hard pulls. works fine for the first few gear shifts but eventually will start missing and wont stop untill the revs drop or i restart the engine.
under normal driving car gives me zero problems and never misses. problem only happens on hard pulls.
my guess is the injector for cyl 5 might be clogged or on the way out. ill be checking fuel pressure and already ordered a new fuel filter just to see if that fixes it but if not i may need to get a new injector.
so my question is if anyone knows if the slimmer injectors you find online will fit? my car is a 2001 but has the older really "fat" injectors on the rails. not sure if you can replace the fat injectors with the newer skinny ones and was wondering if anyone knew if there would be a fitment problem if a buy a new skinny one instead of a new fat injector since they are harder to find.
thanks in advance!
when the problem first started i swapped out all 6 plugs and coil packs with OE stuff. problem still persisted.
i haven't had a chance to check for any leaks or cracks yet but will do it today once im back home from work.
really just wanted to know if the injectors will fit incase i need to buy new ones.
had an injector problem back when i first got the car and it was near impossible for me to find the "fat" injectors because no one had them available.
ended up replacing the injector with a used one a local shop had laying around.
with the luck i have for all i know that used on is the one thats bad now :P
it lasted 6 years though so not bad lol
Do your self a favor plugs coils and water pump change them get parts from FCP guarantee for life
I didn’t and went discounted vendor cost me double to correct my cheapness
Specs are different between the Mk1 (fat) and Mk2 (skinny) injectors, so you want to run all of the same. Also the Mk2 injectors need to be modified to fit with the retaining clips. Looks like LN currently has sets of both in stock:

thats where i got everything from lol. been using FCP for years now and i already get all my reg maintenance parts for free at this point. super convenient especially for oil changes!
thats what i was afraid of.
and do you mean the retaining clips that hold them to the fuel rail? if thats all that needs to change i can prob get all 6 of the MK2 injectors and buy the clips. their quite cheap online.
and if the MK2 flow specs are slightly higher than the MK1 i can prob use them to match the performance upgrades of the car.
do you happen to know the flow specs of each one?
thanks thats actually super informative and makes sense.
someone actually even gave a link showing where i might be able to get them for cheap as well.
it looks like the volvo injectors are the same as the porsche ones but wont require modification since the notch on it is already a bit higher. and at around $20 an injector on the volvo ones i might as well buy all 6 and give it a try to see if they fit.
if they fit ill confirm and let you guys know!
I wouldn't try remanufactured Volvo injectors.
Remanufactured means cleaned and new external o-rings. But the inside seals can't be replaced.
I would rather modify new 996.2 injectors to fit a 996.1 than install a used injector.
You can buy new 996.2 Bosch injectors for less than Injector Planet charged for "remanufactured."
I've been stocking up on parts that I might need for the life of my 996.2.
I gladly spent $200 for a set of new 996.2 Bosch injectors.
I understand saving money, but this is a critical part and deserves to be a quality part.
Like water pumps and coolant reservoirs, this needs to be a brand new OEM part.
honestly your probably right. i have never skimped on getting new parts for the car and i wont start now. pelican looks to have them for around $65 so i can go that route
Yes they do. You have to etch/cut a slight groove in each one so that the retention clip will properly fit. Its fairly easy to do with a Dremel or similar.
I JUST SAW YOUR POSTING. I HAVE A 996.2 ENGINE TO REBUILD. IF FORMERFROST DOES NOT WNAT THESE INJECTORS, I WOULD LIKE THEM. PLEASE SEND INFO WHERE TO SEND YOU THE MONEY.
MARK DAVIES
wtf are you talking about dude
if he wants to spend slightly less money and make the mod Im sure he will. This is a technical forum not a maximize your sales forum.
how are they an upgrade? Honest question?
i thought this issue was that factory 996.1 injectors are way more expensive. LNE has made them cheaper.
so the .2s are slightly cheaper now but a modification is required. Is it worth it?
you mean $140? And whats the labor to modify the injectors?
this isnt about your sale, its about accuracy when evaluating options.
my engine has 110k miles. I might want to replace my injectors. Your approach is not swaying me towards buying .2 injectors from you, thats for sure.
Dude do your research it isn’t my trick I heard about it here by at least 4 dozen more knowledgeable rennlister so it’s a cheaper alternative and a more abundant part if you want to waste your money buying un notched injectors be my guest I offered the exact parts he was all ready looking at also saving him some money in the process
you jumped in without knowledge on this subject and want to drag me into something you have no info on yes you referenced the exact part from a more expensive vendor I offered HIM not you at a slight savings and a faster shipping yes $140 is not the only difference tax is also higher
The 996.1 came with EV-1 "pintle style" injectors, the 996.2 came with EV-6 "4 hole disk" style. Read up on the difference.
Even with the cost saving and a little labor, you MAY not want to upgrade, if you just want to keep it original..
On a car this old, and with the pain factor of changing injectors,, DO ALL 6
Tired injectors are very very likely one of the main contributors to bore scoring (Its not just a Porsche thing.. )
That doesnt tell me much but I appreciate the high level delineation. Is the fuel atomized more efficiently?
edit: found another thread with your take on the improvement. Thanks so much, it does sound like an upgrade. This is why I asked.
