POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all, As per my sig, I've got Fabspeed's Competition Air Intake ( http://www.fabspeed.com/porsche-996-...intake-system/ ) and a Catless X-Pipe - Fabspeed's dyno given as an example, it's a SpeedTech pipe ( http://www.fabspeed.com/996-carrera-catbypass-x-pipe/ ). I'm gearing up to dump a tune in it, and I'm torn between EVOMS and Softronic. As shown on Fabspeed's site, these two mods are good for 57 WHP, so which of the above tuners will give me 400+ WHP with just the tune? Kidding, of course. Basically I'm looking to make the most of what's there. There have been a number of threads on which tune to pick...just looking for the latest and greatest opinions on these two. So. Questions: 1. Preferences? I'm sure both would suit my needs. Pros / Cons of either? 2. What "add-ons" other than an ECU-remap should I realistically consider? E.g. raise the rev limiter.

POST 2Original post

100% for EVOMSit and its a learning software, it will tailor itself to your mods, you will be able to call them and talk about it before you buy and let them make sure its adjusted to what you have done and it can make adjustments after its running Youve got a mild intake, exhaust mods , its not going to be an extreem adjustment

POST 3Original post

I used softronics on my other cars and have had great results and excellent customer service. With that said, I'll be getting the FVD tuner this summer. Evomsit is good too but it requires you to ship them your ecu. FVD and Softronics is a DIY where they send you the maps. FVD's system can also auto adjust for any bolt ons you may do down the line so no incremental costs incurred. It will also allow you to return to your stock map should you want to sell it or bring it to the dealers. Lastly Rhonda is active here and her customer support is excellent. http://www.fvd.de/us/en/Porsche-0/92...ool_E-Gas.html

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hadn't looked too much into FVD...I'll take a look. EVOMS now offers a flash cable so you don't have to ship them your ECU.: http://www.evoms.com/TUNEit_by_EVOMS...g_p/tuneit.htm It's $230 extra, but their tune is $300 less than Softronic, so...really they're still cheaper.

POST 5Original post

Track only? If not will it pass smog test? In Calif =NO !

POST 6Original post

I can't compare between any of them, but just flashed mine with Softronic last Friday. It also allows the ECU to adapt to further bolt-ons. I have the Fabspeed CAI (silicone pipe with BMC drop-in filter). I also have a Sprint Booster set to the middle (green) mode. Scott @ Softronic was very helpful and turned around my uploaded stock file with the tuned file within a couple of hours. I've put a 100+ miles on it and am very happy with it. It's hard to get a lot out of a tune on N/A car. My '10 GTI has an upgraded turbo, w/m injection, larger IC, tune and pretty much every other bolt on imaginable. It puts down 311 hp/331 TQ on a Mustang dyno. I'm satisfied with the performance level that my 996 has. If I want to shred tires, my GTI will fit that need.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 13193643

Hey, we got the tar sands up here. Who cares about a little smog from the tailpipes?

POST 8Original post

If that's the case, they're all pretty much the same with the exception of user friendliness when it comes to the actual install. FVD has a standalone tool with no Windows OS requirement, whereas Evomsit and Softronics requires a cable to computer connection installing their software onto a Windows OS. If you're a computer dummy, the FVD might be a better fit for you. As for smog test, any of these will actually improve it as it's actually leaning the mixture in most cases, allowing the car to run more efficiently. You can always revert to stock map easily in the worst case scenario.

POST 9Original post

Find a local tuner that can tune YOUR car on a dyno, and do it live.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 13194003

This. There's no substitute for having a relationship with a local tuner that can see, feel and hear how the car responds to changes. The tuner I use has helped me locate and fix little issues that would have taken days to or longer to figure out while e-tuning.

I'd love to, but I don't think it's going to happen. The only local Porsche indy only installs GIAC, and no dyno. Not to mention they want $600 more to just download the tune... The only custom shop with a dyno specializes in American things with more cylinders. And no, I won't pass smog :P My old MkV Jetta TDI rolled coal, for Pete's sake. It had a Malone Stage 1.5. TIA, mate (This is Alberta ) I'm quite handy wit 'dem 'puters, so I'm not concerned if I need to download myself. ....Actually I work in industrial automation, so while the exact processors and protocols of the automotive industry are still a mystery to me, the antiquity in speed / interface / user friendliness that is every OBDII device I've seen is baffling. Example, from FVD's site, "Our software delivery tool is the latest technology..." I know it'll be fully functional and work as advertised, but the technology is over 20 years old. Anyway, before I rant too much more, thanks all for your input!!!

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 13194003

This would obviously be the ideal scenario if you're willing to spend a bit more to maybe get that extra 10-20%. But with mild bolt ons and no serious engine mods like most of us, you might already be at a point of diminishing returns. The real issue though is the lack of tuner availability that are able to tap into the Porsche DME that are local to us. If you know of any, please provide a list here.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 13194149

I don't think anyone running catless is going to pass Cali emissions. I was referring to a tune actually reducing emissions levels and not increasing it for those that think they do. Just to be clear, it won't reduce emissions enough that you can pass a sniffer test, although I have seen tunes on another manufacturer motor that came awefully close to it.

POST 18Original post

My $.02 I researched and read alot of reviews on tuners. My concern, spending a $1000 on an intangible product. You can't see it, can feel it, you don't bolt it on. There is a reason why so many performance part manufacturers and retailers offer Evoms. I talked with them at length. Then they will send you a multi page question sheet. Todd & Sam walked me through entire process. I used the cable and sent them my settings, the tune was set. I opted for a little lower rev limiter and a 5k launch control. Down loaded the tune, allow sensors to reset and that's it.

POST 19Original post

Bottom line: You can't go wrong with any of them, especially with the mild mods we're talking about(bolt ons). It's gonna mainly depend on your brand loyalty/perception. Evomsit has been very popular and around a long time in the US(I had their first gen header before and have their intake). FVD comes from the motherland and has been around for ages in Germany and is very popular over there. Their core business is in Europe so they don't really need to aggressively market themselves over here as much. Softrontics has been in the tuning business starting in Europe and expanding to the states for awhile now too. Like I said the main differences are the interface and upgrade tier pricing for options like cat delete, left foot braking, tiptronic parameter changes, SAI delete, etc. Or course this is RL so the need for obsessive deep analysis, overly cautious optimism or pessimism, debate, splitting hairs, etc is always present.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source posts: 13194003, 13194713

That's why I like TTFS . I think it's preferable to a dyno as you get a tune that's suited to how you actually use your car , not an one-for-all-models tune. You data log while driving your car in conditions that you normally experience. You then get a customized tune based on this data. Best part is you can keep going back and forth until you're completely satisfied, data logging, sending your information to TTFS and then and receiving tunes.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well. I'll continue to analyze, if only for my own amusement. Softronic: $895 http://www.softronicsoftware.com/996...oftware-00-04/ Claims: 20HP/13TQ (on 93, test conditions not specified, no dyno) EVOMS: $924 http://www.evoms.com/996_Carrera_EVO...ra3.6ltune.htm Claims: 25HP/23TQ (on 91, detailed test conditions, dyno provided) FVD: $995 http://www.fvd.de/us/en/Porsche-0/-/...lash_Tool.html Claims: 10HP/11TQ (fuel not specified, test conditions not specified, dyno looks generic) So right out of the gate we see that $$ != Gains. EVOMS shows the best dyno( http://evomsit.com/tuning/porsche/po...96-carrera-c4s ) but FVD's is arguably the most realistic, but looks "fake" due to all the smoothing. FVD has a good description of how smart and "adaptive" their program is. Programs don't adapt, so all they can have done is provided different criteria for different data maps; people have claimed both EVOMS and Softronic do this as well. Without seeing the maps myself, I cannot comment. I think if one of them opened up their software to me, that'd be an instant sale. FVD is selling me on their description. However they are the most expensive and have (from my limited exposure here) the smallest install base. Softronic and EVOMS I see all the time from many Porsche performance distributors. EVOMS has the most detailed dyno plot, with detailed test conditions that would more reflect my conditions (intake, 91 octane, but they didn't include any exhaust modifications). I appreciate that they differentiate between Stages, even if their Stage 2 (exhaust) hasn't been dyno'd. I get a warm fuzzy feeling because they acknowledge the different mapping for each modification, even if Softronic and FVD might be "customized". Part of why I'm still looking into this is simple: their work is done, they will make MINIMAL (if any) changes to their pre-developed tunes, and fire it off to me. And for $1,000... c'mon guys. Sell me on it. Make something stand out.

POST 22Original post

Close your eyes and throw a dart. The higher price of FVD is due to their standalone module hardware. Comparing dyno's from different company's are worthless as is believing their claims 100%. They all also claim that they have ex Bosch/Siemens ECU engineers that's developed these programs. It basically boils down to if you like Nike, Reebok, or Adidas.
