I use a local garage that does hand washing (during the winter, at least) but the soap these places use is designed to take off the most dirt possible without regards to the wax.

I would have no hesitation using Motorwerks based on my experience - it's just I bought from the Exchange!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I love the downtown life except for the deliemma on how to keep the car washed and cleaned without spending $70 + tips each time. Took it yesterday to Gold Coast Car wash and for $25, I got the car hand washed but I remain severely unimpressed. Any recommendations from those who live in/near Lincoln Park, River North, Streeterville, or Gold Coast and have *personal* experince with a nearby car wash would be highly appreciated!
Have a safe and happy new year!
I'll admit that I like to wash my own car and take it to someone else only when I HAVE to have it done right away. That said, there's a little place I go to that is an inexpensive hand wash with good results. We're not talking a $100 detail job that you'll be thrilled with, just a decent job that doesn't hurt the car and leaves everything looking nice and tiddy. The place is on Clybourne just south of Wrightwood (south of the Dominick's). I can't remember what its called, but you'll see it there on the west side of the street (if you're heading south on Clybourne and hit Fullerton you've gone too far). $10 during normal hours or $7 if you can get it in before 10am on a weekday. They seem to do a MUCH better job when there is no line of cars and they can take their time. Maybe you can try it on another car first to see how you like the service.
Have I seen you driving anywhere? I'm right in that area and have seen a few silver 996s and notably the same black turbo a few times recently...
Any good driving roads you've found lately? I'm always looking for good new ones...
Hey BSC - thanks for the tip! I just moved downtown last weekend. Before that, I had my garage all setup for doing all the washing/waxing myself. I noticed a black 996 in my garage today. Its either a c4s or a turbo. I went by too quickly to ascertain either way but since the big reds on it totally caught my eye, it most likely ain't a c2. As long as I am at it, which dealer do you take your car to and how do you like the service? I'm very happy with Motorwerks in Barrington so I hate to leave them but now that dealership is an hour away and I need to find something a wee bit closer.
My fave roads are actually all by Hoffman estates and Barrington. I especially love the Sears HQ complex as it is completedly deserted on weekends with lots of nice curves. Other than that, there aren't that many road near Chicago where I can really let the c2 rip w/o braking every 2 seconds. In fact, just after washing the car, I decided to "go for a drive" which turns out to be a joke my area. Mag mile was crowded as hell but I decided to go thru it to on LSD but that was just as crowded. I'm sure in time I'll find some deserted nice roads around here but I'm really wondering where I'm going to drive the p-car here. I can use it to commute but have a beater for that purpose....Sorry, this is turning into a rant of sorts
cheers!
I take mine out to Porsche Exchange in Highland Park as they have a brand new stand alone facility. It actually takes me less time to get there from downtown than out to Barrington.
I agree with you on the driving roads around Motorwerks. Other than that head WAY south and west of Tinley Park to the forest preserve roads south of the Calumet river. Deserted and with good sight lines. Or...play hooky one day and do a X-country route to Lake Geneva.
I've also driven some great back roads on my way to buy beer...west of Madison. A Porsche makes you do these kind of things!
mmmm the drive to Lake Geneva, yes I couldn't agree more. and the Sears HQ is one I'll have to try in the spring.
As far as dealers, I like Motorwerks and make the drive out there when I need anything. I've visited the Exchange up in Highland Park too, and it seems like a very nice and professional facility -- but I still like my service guys in Barrington.
We'll (MotorWerks) will assist you with getting your car out here. I'm in Porsche Sales and have sold some P-cars to folks downtown. Scott in service will most likely pick up your car if you need him to.
Helped me out before and was very professional. I would have no hesitation using Motorwerks based on my experience - it's just I bought from the Exchange!
I don't live in Chicago, but I can give you a tip-bring your own soap to a hand wash place. I use a local garage that does hand washing (during the winter, at least) but the soap these places use is designed to take off the most dirt possible without regards to the wax. I bring my own P21S car shampoo, and they're glad to use it instead of the stuff that comes in 50 gallon drums.
Chicago 996-
If Streeterville is convienient, consider parking at McClurg Court (on Ohio).
I belong to the health club there, which provides validated parking at a bargain. But even better, the garage will do an exterior hand wash for $12.00 while your're in the gym. If you don't already have a health club, check out the one in the building. AS
Thanks for the all input. I will definitely try out the bring your own soap (and maybe even towels) thing.
AS - I know the gym you are talking about and if I didn't already belong to another, that would be the one I would goto besides the dinky one in my building.
On an another note, haven't driven the p-car in almost 7 days. That's the longest since, well, since last winter and it sux!!!!!!!!
On yet another note, checked out the luxury import dealership a block away from me (close to Rush and Michigan) and talk about WOW, what a freaking inventory. Check this:
4 Ferrari Modenas, 2 of which were Spyders
2 Lambo Murci's (closest I have ever seen one of these)
2 Porsche 911 turbo cabs
1 Porsche 911 C4S cab
2 Porsche 911 TT coupes
1 Bentley (big *****!)
1 Aston Martin Cab
1 E55 AMG
several "if I could just spare $200 or so Gs....sigh" on my part.
Your talking about Gold Coast Bentley. They own Bentley of Westmont and Luxury Motors. Where do you guys live in Chicago. I'm on Ohio and Michigan Ave.

It seems to get filled up with guys with money to burn on a testosterone rush on saturday mornings. It's a little tacky for my taste...but I walk past it on my way to work 2 or 3 days a week and they do have some nice cars...

I live off of Grand Ave. and Lake Shore Dr. (LPT)
Joe Abass runs a tight operation at Luxury Motors.
Amazing how much he has done since he first started.
I'm real close to Superior and Michigan Ave. Chef, you are right on with that 'viva las vegas' observation. Still, it is like nothing I have seen in a dealership. Where do they service the cars then? At one of their other locations? ONe salesperson told me that the C4S cab that had sold a few days ago has "already appreciated" in case I was interested!!! hahahaha
We have some good representation in Chicago, we should get together sometime.
On another note, for those who don't know already, the 6spd Meet will be in Chicago this year....
Chicago Meet Thread
honestly this thread is great. Some of the chicgao area road recommendations are still accurate and not obvious to the daily driver
Im glad this popped back up. Passing by Hofmann estates soon!
