Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I installed Ohlins coilovers with Tarett top hats on my '99 C2 (took me a full day but everything fits nicely).

Suggestion
disconnect both outer tie rods, turn steering wheel to full lock to full lock in the opposite direction, and count the number of revolutions of the steering wheel, split that number and that will be center.

Maybe someone in the past replaced the inner tie rods and ended up using the wrong parts?

- I imagine setting the top hats back to 0 camber would help gain a turn or two on the tie rod, and adjustable lower arms would push the wheel out and gain a couple more turns which should be enough to get my toe back to 0.
Use stock lowers (non-gt3) its positioning the upright

The only thing i can think of is with the top mount in the high camber position and using stock lowers (non-gt3) its positioning the upright to far inboard.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone, my alignment guy and I are a bit stumped on this one.
I installed Ohlins coilovers with Tarett top hats on my '99 C2 (took me a full day but everything fits nicely). Front top hats are installed as they came from Tarett, which are set to -1 degree camber, and the coilovers set to what Ohlins recommend in the manual.
I ended up with -2 camber all around, which is fine, but we ended up maxing out the toe adjustment on the passenger side (inner and outer tie rods threaded into each other at the limit) with 0.6 degree toe out. We could get the driver side closer to zero but we set it to match the passenger side for now so that the car drives straight. It's not bad; a bit darty but I don't want to leave it as is for much longer.
Anyone else encountered the same problem before?
- I imagine setting the top hats back to 0 camber would help gain a turn or two on the tie rod, and adjustable lower arms would push the wheel out and gain a couple more turns which should be enough to get my toe back to 0. $1500 (looking at elephant racing for unlimited adjustability instead of shims)
- I could get bump steer kits that are out there, but I'm not sure if they provide extra toe in adjustment over the stock parts that would cure my current issue. I refer this option $500
- Or.... I could just cut the outer tie rod enough till i get back to zero, this would be $0
- I also like how low it currently sits, but I would not mind raising it a little to clear my underground garage a bit easier. it might get me half a turn? $0
This is my first post here so thank you all for all the info I've already learned from lurking.
Sounds like you need to re-center your steering rack.
disconnect both outer tie rods, turn steering wheel to full lock to full lock in the opposite direction, and count the number of revolutions of the steering wheel, split that number and that will be center. Re-connect your outer tie rods and set your toe. Your steering wheel may be off center after resetting your center point. Which then you will have to unbolt the steering wheel and re-clock it to center on the steering column.
someone in the past probably got it all out of whack and your now discovering it with the work you just did.
good luck
with both sides adjusted to the max inward, there is still toe out so I'm not sure if shifting the rack will help. I will give it a go though.
I think for now i will just cut down the outer tie rods to get toe back to 0
None of this makes sence. Unless u have the wrong tie rid ends i dont see how this can happen. The only thing i can think of is with the top mount in the high camber position and using stock lowers (non-gt3) its positioning the upright to far inboard. I would go to a 0-1* camber and see what happens.
^ I'm thinking the same thing as well; the top hats pushing the knuckles in. Even then it doesn't really make sense that it would have so little adjustment; the tie rods look like they are the correct ones. I will get it up on the lift Friday to see what I can do.
This seems like a common enough set up but somehow I'm not able to search for anybody with the same issue. Strange.
My alignment guy didn't even charge me as he couldn't get it to spec.
Maybe someone in the past replaced the inner tie rods and ended up using the wrong parts? And they are too long?
I have had 996/997/986/987s set with -3 to -4.0 and never had an issue setting toe to zero, or toe in or toe out in any way at all. Im fairly confident that your top hats installation isnt causing your issues.
in your search for similar problems, the reason why you didnt find anything is mostly because it hasnt been a problem. There is something uniquely wrong on your car that is now showing itself. I would be looking closely at your inner and outer tie rods, for correct parts and proper installation.
I have the same issue with my hlins R/T and max camber with elephant racing top hats. The driver side would need a half turn more to get it to 0. I blame the aftermarket inner and out tie rods and I also would need to change the lower wishbone as there is a small clunk in heavy turns.
