Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Set painted and ready' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Set painted and ready' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I replaced all brake pads, rotors, sensors and shims (dampers) and brake fluid (twice). These are Zimmerman coated rotors with Akebono pads. I assume this is a caliper that needs to be rebuilt? See pic. This is only happening on the driver side front corner. All other discs are perfectly shiny. Thanks in advance!

When you took the old pads and rotors off, was wear equal across both left and right front? Like was the driver side front worn more than the passenger side front?
I guess what you're showing could be a sign that a piston isn't working properly and would need a rebuild like you mentioned, but what does surprise me is that since the pistons are in a line and sweep the full face of the pad, I'd almost expect the top or bottom of the pad to be wearing quicker if you had a piston not working properly, not the inside or outside of the pad/rotor to be wearing unevenly. Hope that makes sense, was trying to figure out how to describe it without a visual.
I would pop out the pads and inspect. Something is preventing the full face of the pad from bedding into the rotor. The outer rotor marks looks like maybe debris is stuck between the pad and rotor.
yea that looks like more of a pad issue than a caliper issue. flip the pads inside/outside or right to left and see how it wears.
akebono is generally a street pad, so if you have a track day on them, they may be done
Pull the rotor and put it on a turntable and see what song it plays. That will give you the answer.
p.s. you might have to play it in reverse. Could be backward masking.
A little more driving/braking will clear that up. It just looks like some surface rust from washing and putting away that has not worn completely off yet..All the surface rust doesn't magically all disappear at the same time, even on a near perfect surface, much less on one that has seen a Track Day..
I have seen cars on the Porsche Lot that have been washed on the lot and let sit that would actually not move would or slide one wheel from the surface rust. I saw one slide a front wheel for about 100 feet before it finally broke loose and started to clear off the rust...lol
I had this same issue with the old rotors, so I dont think its the rotors or pads. When I check online, similar issue, people reported caliper slide pin / slide pin boot due to the lack of uniform pressure being applied here.
Mike, you probably need a caliper rebuild. A piston is probably sticking. Happens especially with 22 year old calipers. I've had my Brembos rebuilt a few times.
Doubt anything is wrong with your new rotors and pads. The outer groove may be from a piece of gravel that got jammed in the caliper. Had that happen as well. As the rotor wears down, the groove goes away. Same can be said with rust ring once all four of the pistons are working.
Rebuild kits are fairly cheap. With your mechanical skills, you can probably do it without braking a sweat.
Thats what I was thinking. Ill have to look into the cost of doing all 4 or just the one. Also, separately, all 4 calipers have the paint clear coat coming off, so I may do something about that too.
What is it with Porsche rotors rusting so much anyway? I have a Z4MC with drilled rotors and they do not slew off anywhere near as much rust. In fact after several years and about 10K miles the unbraked surfaces still look like new, bare metal. My 996 rotors throw off so much rust that the brake dust is iron ore colored.
I am in the same boat with caliper paint. Going to hold off until next year and rebuild all 4 again and repaint. Always a project to do, but it's all part of the fun.
Is there an exchange vendor for the brake calipers?

lmk if you guys have had any experiences
Everyone has different levels of mechanical ability, but I have rebuilt many calipers over the years (no 996) with great success. Most were single or double piston (one on each side), but I did do 4 piston Corvette brakes one time. The cost was usual about $10-50 plus paint for a pair depending on the number of pistons and wether or not I could get new pistons vs just new seals and usually only took about an hour if not painting and not too rusty, which yours shouldn't be. An air compressor helps a lot to get the pistons out.
I called these guys. They appear to be a high quality company that rebuild and refinished like the factory. $499/pair for like-new and freshly painted calipers, multiple coats, and 3 clear finishes after the logos, now thats good work. I guess Porsche Classic uses them too. I might just send these guys all 4 calipers and be done with it. They said after 20-30 years, they see lots of rebuilds, especially if the calipers have overheated on the track.
Good option and fair price. As an Fyi, Eurosport has a paint facility now. They have historically rebuilt mine but I never asked them to repaint them. It may be as easy as dropping your car off and having them do it for a similar price. FWIW.
I think youll be very happy. I dont know what COVID did to their turnaround time, but 5 years ago they rebuilt my 914 calipers and they were fantastic
