Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Most all factory (20+ year old) tanks by now have yellowed substantially from extensive heat cycles, the lighter color of your tank plastic makes me think it has been changed already.

It's an OEM tank...but the whiter color and modifications done to it suggest it has been replaced somewhere along the way.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Dropping the engine (2000 996 C2 w/ 90k) to do timing work and other preventative maintenance and looking at expansion tank. I've read the threads regarding OEM vs aftermarket (OEM seems to be the strong suggestion), and even found a thread where someone attempted to retrofit a more economical 997 tank (but did no update). I don't have records on any prior work done. Primarily looking for validation of what I currently have, evaluating changing now or later, and things I should be on the lookout for...
- Can anyone tell me if my tank is the original from my 2000 C2? The reason I ask is that on the right it appears someone shaved off some trim, possibly to assist fitting with engine in.
- I plan to drop the engine in 2-3 years for other work and debating whether to swap tank out now or later. If this appears like a replacement tank or in relatively good condition I might wait. Thoughts?
- Besides the tank, any other considerations related to this job?
It's an OEM tank...but the whiter color and modifications done to it suggest it has been replaced somewhere along the way. My guess is the piece cut off was to help with the replacement tank installation. Most all factory (20+ year old) tanks by now have yellowed substantially from extensive heat cycles, the lighter color of your tank plastic makes me think it has been changed already. If it wasn't leaking or giving you any problems, I would personally clean it up, inspect it, and reuse it.
Thanks for the production line insight. Curious if you noticed the cutout on it and what you think of the turbo attachment removal suggested below. Seems odd that would be necessary or a practice at production line, but they were trying to save money back then.
I wonder if this suggests more of a subsequent replacement.
This is what I was hoping to hear, primarily because of the color and the cut off, but don't know after seeing possibility of this being a production line variant.
I think you misinterpreted b3freak's post. He referenced only the diamond Porsche logo. No mention of the modification in his post.
During assembly the tank would have been fitted with room to spare prior to the driveline going into the body so no need to cut anything off.
Rest assured it is as gbarron wrote and thus what you wanted to hear
