My issue turned out to be the gutter and drain got dragged into the system.
Leading evidence: 'gutter and drain got dragged into the system' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'gutter and drain got dragged into the system' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect tracks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Turned out to be the rocker that allows the mechanism to go from tilt to slide.

Suggestion
The first thing I would do is remove the panel itself and inspect the tracks for proper lubrication and any obstructions.

To explore the root problem you need to remove the sunroof frame and have it on the bench where you can operate gently with the Allen key on the motor so you can see exactly what is causing the problem, then hope that someone else is repairing a sunroof frame with a different issue and you can get them to share parts, or find a frame from a dismantling shop.

From what I can tell, and my experience trying to take this apart previously, youre not going to replace the cable assembly by itself.

Please note none of the conventional means to address this particular problem in YouTube, The Bentley or WSM manuals except under optimal conditions (retracting it to 3.5' using the motor or manual method)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It does not retract any further than 1.5' and the motor will begin to bind if attempting to move it any further. Using the manual method to retract it binds at the same point the motor does. Using the forward selector, the vent opens approximately 1.5 inches then immediately closes. The motor doesn't bind during the vent operation until it has closed, The front right side doesn't quite align with the other corners, but it does seal enough where it doesn't leak. By all appearance the cable has snapped.
I don't see any means of correcting it from the bottom, if there is, I can't even begin to describe the dread and terror I feel dismantling the interior trim in order get to and remove the headboard to do so,
Has anyone experienced this problem and knows how fix it? I've reached an impasse and the end of my own DIY skills.
TIA
Lengthy post but hopefully this helps:
I have never experienced a snapped cable, but I have torn my sunroof apart and replaced it with another cassette so I am fairly well versed with it overall.
First - I think most people can do this job at home but it is time consuming (not necessarily difficult) and, as you probably well know, the risk of breaking any plastic pieces as you remove them is high haha. But if you want to attempt it, Im happy to help you if you have any questions.
Here is a picture of my old sunroof cassette. Each side has its own cable, you can see in this picture that the cable on the topside is for the passenger side of the sunroof and the cable on the bottom side of the track is for the Drivers side of the sunroof.
This is a top down picture, as if youre looking down on the sunroof as its installed in the car and the center hole is where the motor goes. Youre not going to be able to access that cable from the bottom side (inside of the car looking up).
From what I can tell, and my experience trying to take this apart previously, youre not going to replace the cable assembly by itself. However, it may not be a cable problem - you just need to pull it apart and look.
The first thing I would do is remove the panel itself and inspect the tracks for proper lubrication and any obstructions. You need to tilt the sunroof open, then pull to the aft of the car on the sunroof panel itself to remove it, sliding it out through the sunroof tilt, then that will expose two screws in each side to remove the sunroof body panel. Once that is off, you can do a more thorough inspection.
The sunroof will stop or change direction with very little resisting force, so could be a number of things causing your issue.
Here is a picture to show you what the bottom side of the cassette looks like, as if you pulled the headliner down and looked up at your sunroof. No way to access anything.
AeroF16 was super helpful with my sunroof woes. My sunroof had a similar problem to yours: roof will start to retract then bind up, tilts ok but then doesnt settle correctly when it closes. Turned out to be the rocker that allows the mechanism to go from tilt to slide. The plastic end piece had become brittle and cracked so got trapped when I opened the sunroof hence the binding and not setting correctly. Its a small part and I understand that the plastic cover isnt technically required but potentially rattles if left off. Picture of the part below. Aero16 was kind enough to do the firmer for me- awesome member of the forum.
My issue turned out to be the gutter and drain got dragged into the system. I'm waiting on the parts now.
I managed to pull the headliner out, then the sunroof panel. Only 1.5' clearance in vent position. Hardest part were the panel bolts. None of which matched, so someone had been before me.
