I may very well start with the radiator exit mod; I'm honestly a little ticked at myself for not doing it when I cleaned the radiators, but I was in a hurry to get the car buttoned up at that point.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all. Im really enjoying my plain USA spec 99 c4 tiptronic. Only thing is I can feel a little bit of high speed softness. At speeds above say 85 mph the car is not as stuck as it is going much slower. So, Im interested in getting some more downforce. Im wondering which body supplements actually increase downforce, or reduce lift. The techart style is very good and subtle, but does it do anything? How about the aero1 style? There are plenty of aftermarket front bumpers that mimic later models, such as aero1, aero2, gt3, and even turbo styles. Rear spoilers are just as variable. Im mainly interested in the techart front lip ad ons and side skirts, with a techart rear spoiler, or the mshaw ers rear spoiler, which sort of looks like techart. What are your thoughts on reducing lift?
There is a user on this forum currently selling a 996 techart kit. You should consider reaching out and asking feedback on downforce (although its been on a turbo).

I don't know how much actual downforce you're going to feel at 85 mph...Your stock spoiler raises at 70 mph and greatly reducing lift If the car is feeling "floaty" at that speed, I'd be wondering more about the suspension and it's various parts, bushings etc. Also, how do your motor mounts look? If they're drooping at all you should replace them asap - it'll firm up the entire feel of the car especially when cornering. Generally speaking "Aero" on the street is more about looks, as 90% or more of your driving is going to be at speeds below 70 mph...The track is obviously a different story altogether... Good Luck
Great points - I noticed the floatiness, but only occasionally. the most common was long uphill curves under acceleration (a couple of on-ramps nearby). New engine mounts made a difference, all new shocks/struts took the rest of it away...and once the alignment was done it was perfect.
Of course I'm comparing what it feels like to what it felt like before I did all that, and I had really only put about 4,000 miles on it...
Imho, It may make sense to start with mechanical grip first before you take the leap to aero.
If it hasn't already been done, the three things listed below will help to improve your handling.
1. Refresh your suspension with new parts, get it aligned and corner balanced.
2. Great set of new tires at proper inflation
3. New engine mounts
Aero is an aesthetic decision for most, unless they track their car.
You would be surprised at the improvement in mechanical grip at high speeds if you do the 3 items listed above. But expect this, if you cut corners with the 3 items above, your handling will feel the same. Quality is key.
Demon Speed/Joe Toth is a good source for functional (tested) aero parts for these cars.
But improve your mechanical grip first, feeling light at only 80mph isn't an aero issue.
I can tell a difference between these: (all 3 are the same car...takes 5 minutes to swap out rear deck)
Factory rear "automagic" spoiler (Car has Aerokit 2 front bumper ) Old picture as the car now has Aerokit 2 side skirts.
Aerokit 1 "Taco" spoiler (Huge difference over factory 'automagic' spoiler)
GT3RS style carbon fiber spoiler. (some difference over Aerokit 1 "Taco" spoiler)
But I agree, fix any mechanical grip issues first!
^^^ Tex when you say there is a big difference between the taco and factory auto lift spoiler is that in down force or drag or both ? And at approximately what speed do you start noticing the difference ? I want to add either a taco or ducktail to my C4 at some point after I finish the 3.8 .
My understanding is that adding aero at the back and not the front is no bueno. Another thing to add to the "after mechanical stuff" list would be to change where the radiators vent.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...to-reduce.html
Tex, all you need is a RPM duck tail and a Carerra wing and you will have the complete collection to test with your new fsi engine. The fun we can all have with a new testing thread...
The car has much more downforce, and a little more drag.
I notice the difference some above 100mph, and a lot above 130mph.
I would never care to drive my car at 150mph with the factory deck, but it feels fine with either spoiler.
Definitely 100+ is something you want to do on a closed circuit or runway.
American drivers are not safe to drive near at speeds above 100mph!
Correct, you need to do both front and rear according to Porsche.
I may try a ducktail at the Texas Mile once I get my 996 back from Flat6Innovations.
For now I'll use the spoilers I already own.
Right now I'm not able to get close to the factory G96.01 top end...but with the Track Performer II fully broken in, I'm hopeful I'll run out of gearing before I run out of HP.
Then if I can run out of gearing, I'll look at building a second Texas Mile G96.3 transmission with a 3.00 ratio ring and pinion.
At that point I'll see if I need to reduce drag.
At least that's the plan.
I finally gave in and removed some more of my interior to reduce some more weight.
The Bose subwoofer is now setting in a pile of parts in the garage.
It will likely make it's way into the attic with the Taco spoiler and the rear seats.
zbomb is rubbing off on me, although I'm definitely not planning on going that extreme.
When I installed the DasSport all this had to come out.
Just pulled it all out of storage.
It has been all wrapped and boxed for years.
The rear seats haven't been sat going all the way back to 2004
It's like going down memory lane getting ready for BaT
The Esses at WGI are my only spot to compare at 100+

Going through turn 4 WOT, the car definitely feels more planted with the largest of the three splitters compared to the smallest.

After 8 years
The smiles that car brought are immeasurable.
I remember working at a metal fabrication factory, in my early 20s, 12 hour days to keep my 3 small children feed.
Looking out in that parking lot and seeing the owners brand new gold Targa with my first sighting of a Whale Tail.
I told myself, some day I will be driving a Porsche 911.
Three decades later, after those 3 great kids all got their Master's degrees.
I fulfilled that commitment to myself.
It was worth the wait.
I disagree completely with folks saying that aero doesn't matter at street speeds. I had a Honda Fit that would wander like crazy in sidewinds or behind a semi, at highway speeds. I put a front undertray on the car and it was a night/day difference. No more wandering. And my offramp speeds went up 5MPH too! Bonus!!
I just did a full suspension refresh on my targa, largely because of a 'floaty' front end; it was like that all the time, so the shocks needed replacement, but it was also quite nervous at the higher end of the highway speed range. The suspension refresh (RoW M030 springs + Koni Yellows + other stuff + alignment) definitely took away the everyday float, and at higher highway speeds the nervousness is greatly reduced. I definitely agree that these items are the place to start. But the feeling is not entirely gone even after those changes. There is no question at all in my mind that the front of the car was is getting light at 75-80+ MPH.
The 996 already has a pretty darn smooth underside, so no simple undertray fix for me this time. I'm looking for other solutions. I may very well start with the radiator exit mod; I'm honestly a little ticked at myself for not doing it when I cleaned the radiators, but I was in a hurry to get the car buttoned up at that point.

Hi guys. Thanks for the insight on the aero package and splitters. Hoping somebody can chime in with techart experience. the wheel well liner cut outs seem rather small, but if they help, then I may go there. Im also considering the bumper vent that allows the center radiator to vent out the top of the bumper, smily face vent. Thats another issue with the car. It loves to run, but slogging through slow traffic in mid colorado summer is no fun. Im sure the rads need cleaning and probably could use a water pump refresh, along with low temp thermostat. Ugg that should be my next project, rads, wheel well cut outs, and smily face vent.
