Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I turn the key to start the car and the engine will crank twice and stop. Turn the key back to the off position and try starting again and it starts. Happens occasionally, once in thirty starts. Seems odd. I'm thinking it a starter motor protection feature. Anybody had the same issue?

POST 2Original post

Ignition switch, battery, starter motor and solenoid, y-cable.

Install a fresh OEM crank position sensor.

POST 4Original post

You don't indicate whether the car is a manual or automatic, but if it's a manual, you might consider looking at your clutch pedal ignition cut-out switch/wiring. I have a 1999 996 manual, and every once in a while when I depress the clutch pedal and turn the key I get no starter motor action. I repeat the process but depress the clutch pedal to its limit and, voila, the car starts fine. Just part of having short legs I guess. I want to be tall just once!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is manual. I need to push the clutch to the floor to start. Maybe i let up on the clutch during starting and it caused the stoppage. I'll give that a whirl

POST 7Original post

It may be the clutch pedal sensor as noted above.

POST 8Original post

Just went thru this last year, Crank Position Sensor

POST 10Original post

Sorry for hijacking/reviving thread but... I have a 99 manual C4 and do not have to depress clutch to start - I always thought this was normal even though different from most modern manuals I drive Yes, I am old enough to think 99 is modern 😀
