FYI: on my C4S, I've only ever used 303 Aerospace protectant (sparingly) because it offers UV protection on those hard leather surfaces.

Ceramic clear tint isn't illegal and used by a lot of us in the hotter states with high UV indexes.

Suggestion
In your case, I don't think the leather is salvageable, a good leather shop shop be able to replace the leather on the trim pieces.

Had my windshield tinted (must have for AZ summers) and some of the leather trim near the windshield has been damaged by whatever solution they use for installing the tint.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last pic is driver side for reference. Curious as to what you guys think should/could be done?
Legally? Or to fix the dash?
If legally, the first question would be if they installed legal tint. If not, you probably paid with cash and youll be SOL.
yeah
anything
applied to the windshield below the cutoff line is illegal, so its about to get real interesting. if a replacement is even remotely available its going to put the place out of business
what the heck did they do to shrink the leather like that?
The damage piece on the dash can be removed. Unless there is something unique about your dash, that trim section of the dash just snaps off and can be safely removed with the proper plastic removal tools. I'd hire a professional leather upholstery shop to repair or just see if you can order a new replacement from Porsche parts.
I agree with others, you betta make sure it's not illegal in your state for front tint. I had to remove mine on the last 996. It's not legal in GA and they'll nail ya for it.
everything that I've seen says nothing is allowed below the "AS-1" line
whether you'd ever actually get in trouble is another story

I get you but the general understanding is tint is for shade and has color vs a clear film that is clear. My car has clear 3M Nano UV film, got a receipt and warranty as well. I'm not disagreeing with what you are saying but I don't think we're talking about the same thing if the makes any sense.
yeah I know what you mean, I just heard its still technically illegal to put
anything
on the windshield under the line (I'm being intentionally pedantic FYI)
I agree to remove the piece with some nylon upholstery pry tools which you can easily find at an Autozone type shop or get some in 2 days on Amazon. Take it to a professional upholstery shop. They will either restore the leather and re-stitch it or they'll re-cover it and potentially dye it.
Looks like they soaked it with whatever solution they used to apply the film. The leather on the dash and doors is treated and dried at the factory to keep it stable from shrinking. It should never be rehydrated with water-based solutions or leather conditioners since it will become elastic again and come unglued.
I was a training consultant for Porsche 10 years ago and that was an issue we discussed with dealers to advise customers on proper care of the leather surfaces. FYI: on my C4S, I've only ever used 303 Aerospace protectant (sparingly) because it offers UV protection on those hard leather surfaces. No problems in over 16 years and it still looks new.
In your case, I don't think the leather is salvageable, a good leather shop shop be able to replace the leather on the trim pieces.
OP, did you have it done at a reputable shop? I had mine done by XPEL, if they'd have done that, they would have paid to fix it.
Even if not a reputable shop, have you talked to the folks that did the work? Maybe they'll own up to their mistake.
Looks fixable like a lot of folks have said. Good luck!
Im really liking the carbon fiber trim! Wow thats nice.
perhaps you can split the costs to have the dash repaired? Otherwise you might be better off pulling the dash out and deal with it then. Not ideal but trying to work on the edge of the dash up against the extremely sloped glass is risky. One slip with a tool and its new windshield time. Good luck!
The big question is... does OP have pictures BEFORE the tint shop did their work.
(suspense music) bom BOM BOOOOOooooOOOOoooooooom!
"Sorry sir, we didn't do that damage".
(maniacal laugh) - mwhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
You look over at the silent helper playing a triangle on his head with a stupid look on his face - his name - Ralph
. OP asks,
"Do you know anything about this damage?!!!"
He replies, "
I know nothing!!!!!" ((((ping ping ping)))
OP looks at the weird mechanical crew, "Yes you did this damage you filthy hornwaggles!"...
They reply, "Show us the PROOF!!!"
If you aint got none, then it's on you!
But don't sweat, with the right people, this can be corrected.
Hi guys, been at work all day and am happy to see all of the helpful comments and fun remarks. No before pics unfortunately, however, the shop owned up to the mistake and is working with me to resolve the issue.
You guys give me confidence that its not a whole dash-out job like I assumed. Theres an excellent Porsche shop nearby that also does interior work, so Ill get a quote from them sometime this week.
Ill try to get an update up here once some more stuff happens. In the mean time, heres a soapy pic of her rear end for your viewing pleasure
Same thing happened on my 928 leather dash when I had the windshield tinted with clear ceramic to try to reduce interior heat/UV. Luckily the dash in that car was pretty beat to begin with so I really didn't care but I've been afraid to have my 996 done for the same reason since I have the leather dash option on that car. Keep us posted with the outcome.
Morning guys, quick update for you all. The tint shop has completely refunded the tint, and has agreed to pay the cost of repair at a reputable Porsche shop nearby. Cost to repair is a couple grand. Scheduled for repair in June.
I talked to the tint shop owner for a bit to earn some trust, and he takes his biz very seriously. They work on mostly higher end cars and do wraps, details, etc, so he knows the value of a good reputation and customer service. Very impressed by his integrity to do the right thing.
I'll post some after pics once the repair is done!
