Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

My 996 has so many rattles coming from various mystery places. Does anyone have any tips to track these down and fix them? Rattles like this ruin the driving experience for me and make the car feel fragile. Its getting tough to take!! Am I the only one dealing with this or is it common in these cars?

POST 2Original post

Coupe/Cabriolet/Targa? What kind of rattles? Body? Engine? Suspension? When in motion? Idling?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Coupe. Rattles from the dashboard, rear seats, door panels, etc. its hard to determine the exact sources. On smooth roads and highways its barely an issue, but on bumpy Salt Lake City roads its comically noisy. I know I need new bump stops and maybe that would help insulate the cabin from bumpy roads??

Do any of the panels feel loose? It's possible someone had the car apart before and didn't put it all back together well. Are you handy? I've used AutoAtlanta's parts diagrams in the past to determine hardware needed. You might be able to start there and poke around the suspected areas to see if screw/bolts are loose or missing? http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p..._911_parts.php

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The part of the dash that covers the gauge cluster does feel loose I guess it seems possible that someone took the interior apart and didnt do a great job putting it back together. If thats the case, why would someone have taken it apart?

I know its easier said than done, but if you get the chance, record the sounds. Maybe we can help. Could be alot of things inside and out that just need to be tightened down or refreshed.

Who knows. Maybe to service the gauges or heater or something. Someone smarter than me could probably better answer that. What I do know is that when I got my car it's gauge cluster was loose and I discovered that the two screws holding it on weren't tightened down all the way. Someone evidently had removed it at one point and didn't do their job in tightening things up. The good news is it's very easy to remedy. Here's a good video detailing the cluster removal. I would check yours to see if it's screwed down correctly. http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=906-01 You Tube

Check to make sure your spare tire is tight, it is a common place for severe rattles, also worn out shocks can rattle as well as the front diagonal arms and drop links. If you are having interior rattles/door panels ect, your friendly neighborhood Porsche Dealer has an NVH CD that plays on the stereo, and puts out different tones, since waves, and rhythms that will make rattles apparent so you can find them by touch.. (touching the offending item will stop the noise)..

POST 10Original post

In my Toyota days, there was a little boxed kit that had various felt strips in different widths and thicknesses, it was around 200.00 sooooo I just buy felt tape and cut to size. https://www.interwesttools.com/produ...IaAk1nEALw_wcB

POST 11Original post

You just need a louder aftermarket exhaust and remove some of the sound deadening material in the car.

POST 12Original post

I’m betting a no. 2 Phillips screwdriver works wonders.

Wow that blew my mind and then was obvious in hindsight. If you can hook your phone up to your stereo you can do this with an app. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...pecialist.html

Thanks for the thread link, looks like you can buy the Porsche NVH CD for $17uds , not bad, it has 11 different tracks ,a lot more than you you will find by surfing the web for free sound tracks.. one track is just a tone sweep from low to high, then you have individual tones, then some different drum type rhythms ...It's very helpful in quietening down the cabin.. https://redirect.viglink.com/?format...URATTLECD.html

Those crafty Germans thats brilliant. Looks like Ive got a project on my hands. Disassembling the interior sounds daunting, but theres only one way to learn! Thanks for the replies
