Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Each time I inspected the filter and oil and found nothing to report.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect filter and oil and found nothing' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pan as well' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Suggestion
At this point it would be worth getting your engine borescoped, you'll also get a chance to check the pan as well.

Since the last few oil changes were good I did not even think to catch some of this oil since it only had around 1K miles on it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thoughts to the forum. Thought things were looking up and then this. 2003 Carrera 4S 71K miles. Engine previously replaced by Porsche after failure at 17K miles. So it has the larger bearing from the 997 generation cars. This was confirmed by a local dealer record search and by my mechanic this past fall when I had the clutch and RMS replaced. RMS was not leaking at the time. Anyway to the bad. I performed an oil change this past weekend and found what you see in the attached photo in the filter. None of the material reacts to a magnet. I have performed oil changes every 3K or 6 months since I purchased it in Spring of 2020. Each time I inspected the filter and oil and found nothing to report. The oil change this past fall was done at my mechanic when he did the clutch. He also tore down the filter and had nothing bad to report. Also to note. I had the AOS replaced in spring of 2021. Car has always had excessive oil consumption 1/2 quart can go as quickly as a few hundred miles but has never got any worse. Does a puff of smoke at start up but not while running. No ticking or strange sounds from motor. I am sending it back to my mechanic next week. Should I not drive it? Oh and it seems to have an oil leak at the front of the oil pan. See photos. Thoughts? Thanks

Close up
Pan towards front of car dripping oil seems to be coming from above pan. See other picture from driver's side.

Your post says "metal in the oil filter" but then you say the pieces didn't react to a magnet so I'm assuming they aren't metallic. Possible plastic from the timing chain guide?
Unfortunately, I did not save enough of it. At least I don't think I did. I only had about 1/4 of a standard pill bottle... like the one doctors give you a prescription in. Since the last few oil changes were good I did not even think to catch some of this oil since it only had around 1K miles on it. My stupidity. I managed to keep the little bit that was left in the bottom of the filter housing.
