In some cases, dealers/shops replaced the flange as a fix for a leaky ims bearing/flange as we all know now, this was/is a fools errand as it has little to nothing to do with the bearing failing.

I believe 2003 was one of those years where Porsche could have put anything in there, as they are famous for either launching next model year improvements in current years or using older inventory in later year cars.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking at a 996 C4S 2003 that my Mercedes dealer has for sale. I don't have to much knowledge on the 996 but I know the possible issue with the IMS They told me that the IMS was replaced. They have a picture showing the IMS and it has the part number 99602406 and Germany on the face. Is this a Porsche part? From what I read, this part is the non serviceable third design IMS bearing from model year 2006 through 2008. Is this correct? If so, does this means that the engine was replaced? Is it possible to validate with the VIN if the engine was replaced? Thanks for your help?

POST 2Original post

I can't really help with the IMS bearing, but check the engine number. If it was a factory replaced engine it will have "AT" in the engine number stamped on the block. A Google search on where the engine number is located will bring up plenty of pictures that you can send to the sales rep so he/she can provide the engine number to you. I believe 2003 was one of those years where Porsche could have put anything in there, as they are famous for either launching next model year improvements in current years or using older inventory in later year cars.

From the photo that most definitely looks like the non-serviceable IMS bearing. Here's our recommendations for what you can and should do on an engine with the larger 6305 ims bearing: https://lnengineering.com/products/t...s-bearing.html

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 18163004

Hmmm...something doesn't seem right. It is a 2003 996. It probably came with the larger non-servicable IMS bearing. The dealer is saying the IMSB was replaced, which is not possible without a complete engine tear down. Then, in 2008, the engine was removed to complete repair. Repair of what? Not the IMSB. So something is not right. You need to do some more checking and get a picture of the engine number. There is no way to check the VIN and specific engine number. Nobody keeps track of that.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just read the documentation from lnengineering.com '' With model year 2006 through 2008 Porsche 987 Boxster, Cayman, and 997 911 engines, the intermediate shaft was redesigned and used a larger 6305 bearing. However the oversized IMS bearing used by Porsche in M96 and M97 engines manufactured in and after the 2006 model year is larger than the IMS flange housing bore which prevents replacement of this bearing without complete disassembly of the engine. This also means that replacement engines manufactured and sold by Porsche for Boxster, Cayman, and 911 engines in or after the 2006 model year will have the larger non-serviceable IMS bearing.'' So it is not possible that this 2003 C4S has the non-serviceable IMS bearing new from factory. I will try to get the engine serial number to confirm that it is a replacement engine.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 18163485

I have an 03' that had a similar situation, except the engine out repair was in 2009 at Porsche Beaverton. If you look for the engine serial number you may find that it starts with AT, which means it was a factory replacement. If you look around on the forums there is some information about engines after a certain serial number that have the larger non serviceable bearing, which is what it sounds like may be the case for that particular car. Can you let us know the engine serial number when you do find it?

POST 9Original post

That is simply a picture of the IMS bearing flange. On its own, it meaningless, except that it seems to indicate the larger bearing. In some cases, dealers/shops replaced the flange as a fix for a leaky ims bearing/flange as we all know now, this was/is a fools errand as it has little to nothing to do with the bearing failing. Do your diligence on this one!
