It's a synthetic (plastic) fabric that was developed by the Japanese, but it didn't sell. The Italians bought the rights and changed the name to Alcantara and were able to charge more for it. Somehow it's become a hit and is a desirable fabric in cars. I don't think cost is the issue now as it's not cheap to buy, but probably is to make. The link to the seller above looks like it's the real thing.

If you were really really OCD you could buy a genuine headliner, you'd get plenty of fabric as they are quite big.
