Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
I also remember reading that the DME/ECU will either have to be replaced or reprogrammed to change from tiptronic to manual.
Leading evidence: 'Replace from tiptronic' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace from tiptronic' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

With the low value of the 996 I just don't see how this is worth doing unless someone simply wants a complex and frustrating project.
Having said that, it would be an interesting thread to follow!
I think this would be a highly complex job and not worth the money. What is wrong with the tiptronic? You can shift it manually if you want to. Think of the cost and modifications to do this: manual gear box, entire clutch system including installing a clutch pedal, master cylinder and so on. I also remember reading that the DME/ECU will either have to be replaced or reprogrammed to change from tiptronic to manual. Seems just not worth the time, effort and money. IMHO...
Great idea. Fun and very challenging project. Like the LS swaps and other mods, it's always cheaper and easier to buy what you want the first time. IMO.
I would think the biggest challenge is the electronics and the programming of them. It's just code and processors. It's certainly possible.
Figure you'll be replacing everything from this point and forward.
Good luck!
I agree with what youre saying. I remember seeing a while back someone said that did this and was hoping they chimed in. I have a tip C2. Shes a driver with around 50k miles San well maintained. Shes a keeper. I want to add a 6 speed car one day... maybe a Subaru STI or sell the C2 and add a turbo... best laid plans. Well see
Someone here in Australia has done it - went from a tip cab to a tip manual. You'd be better off buying an entire donor manual as there are lots of parts you need. DME can be reprogrammed but you need specialist tools and codes.
Your entire wiring harness is different too.
My car went from tip to manual. 30k miles ago. Still running strong.
however I did not do it myself.
my Indy did it for me. He knows the 996/997 very good. Also electronically. He offered to do it for me if I wanted after he finished his 997 tip in which he plugged a tweaked 3.4 engine and a manual
tranmission. That was a nice car. 997 looks with 3.4 engine characteristics.
i could maybe help you out for some things. However all the details and especially the reprogramming wiring I cannot help you.
i got a shopping list of parts I had to source. I could share it with you. I dont know if I already posted it somewhere here.
- Clutch with flywheel
- Imstrument panel manual gearbox
- Gearbox with axles and mount bracket
- Gear lever assembly and cables
- Center console for manual gearbox
- Water pipes heater under the engine
- Clutch line set + cilinder
- Clutch pedal with mounting and brake pedal
The most difficult to find was the correct rear light switch connector. It came of a Saab transmission.
sounds like a nightmare. I think the tip life is for me. I dont want to sell and deal with sorting a 6 speed car as well as taxes and DMV BS. Left leg will continue to sit idle
I got 24hrs of labour charged ( labor costs here are 50% of the US prices that I see). Probably it was a bit more hours but he also liked the challenge to do
it on a clients car. And we are friends.
sale of swapped parts could recover 50-70% of sourced parts.
my car had newly revised modified engine.
ohlins road and track
so I decided to stay with what I got. Instead of buying another car without knowing in detail its state and history.
