Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I replaced the entire pad when I had my engine apart because the plastic bad that the chain rides on was worn.
Leading evidence: 'Replace entire pad' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check springs, resurface, pressure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took my '99 C4 Cab in to
IMSWerks
, Robert
Rodriguez is just setting up his shop in Manassas, VA,
for an IMS Solution pre-qualification inspection with an IMS Solution install planned. I bought the car 2 years ago with 26,000 miles on the clock and I've put just under 9,000 miles on myself. The car is running well, the AOS was ok and I didn't appear to have any oil leaks anywhere. Oil consumption was zero.
What Robert found was a little unexpected to say the least. The good news is that there are apparently no metal bits in the sump so my IMS looks to be intact though I still need a UOA. The bad news, possibly worse, is that it looks like my IMS Tensioner Paddle is on the way out. The tensioner was collapsed with no tension on the IMS chain at all.
So what options do I have at this point and at roughly what cost given the D.C. labor market? I read through this thread,
IMS Tensioner Paddle Failing
, so I know the case needs to be split to replace the paddle.
Here are some pics Robert sent. I'll post more when I get the pics of the bore scope exercise.
I guess this is the tensioner
Plastic bits in the sump
Camshaft deviations are out of spec
The size of the IMS Tensioner Paddle button found in the sump.
There appears to be no bore scoring but I'm waiting for better pics from Robert's new borescope. The borescope broke and he had to use an older one to scope the cylinder bores. UOA hasn't been done yet. If the UOA comes back ok, given this is the first UOA that will have been performed on my watch, everything else looks good.
I'll be talking to Robert this evening or tomorrow but I figure this leaves me with some choices. I could:
Do nothing. Just button things back up and and wait for things to deteriorate before updating everything. I would have to duplicate the pre-qualification cost.
Update the tensioners, IMS tension paddles, and timing chain guides, RMS, UAOS install, IMS Solution. Save the cylinder upgrades for later. I bit easier on the wallet.
Do everything all at once. Ouch!
By an already rebuilt motor and swap it out (I think byprodriver has a spare)
Any insights are appreciated.
Thanks!
The differences between byprodriver's engine build seem to be:

I'd have to sell my motor. What does a certifiably rebuildable M96.1 go for these days?
You can buy the part that broke off from Porsche and replace it without taking the engine apart. See part number 21
http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=103-10
I replaced the entire pad when I had my engine apart because the plastic bad that the chain rides on was worn. If I'm not mistaken, this part just pushes into the hole in the aluminium casting like a push pin, so it should be a very easy fix.
To add insult to injury.....to buy the entire tensioner arm that has this plastic button already installed is a couple $$ less than just buying the button alone. BUT the fact that Porsche sells it separately is a really good thing, means you can replace it.
I am this close, --><--, to having the engine sent down to FSI (
) for a complete rebuild. This follows a really good conversation with FSI yesterday afternoon that just confirmed to me their knowledge and dedication to the 996. Just about all of the known issues with the M96 will be addressed and I'll get a performance boost via a modest hp gain and a much better torque curve. I know I would get this with byprodriver's engine but I wouldn't have to have holes drilled into the heads to attach the exhaust manifold. I also wouldn't have to deal with selling an engine for which I have no storage space.
FSI has pencilled me in for a 6/2021 slot. I just need to confirm and start the ball rolling.
I certainly could do that but there would always be the many modes of failure of the M96 just waiting for just the right moment to make themselves known to me. I really like the 996. The chassis is amazing, much better than anything I've ever driven. I'd like to get the most out of the car as it should have built without all the worries of catastrophic engine failure.
