Reported cause
According to people much more knowledgeable than me, large camshaft deviation on 5 chain motors is due to worn out tensioner pads and such.
Leading evidence: 'worn out tensioner pads and such' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'worn out tensioner pads and such' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check things out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm nearly done rebuilding a 5-chain 3.6L M96 and 3 of the chains are installed before the two case halves are mated.

Didnt see the number of starts in thr software but its got around 8k hours so that averages out at 25mph dont think this car was used for highway driving.

It would cost more to do a partial rebuild or repair today, in the long run.

You can replace the two short chains while you are replacing the pads, they are the ones that wear the fastest/most anyway, and lead to cam deviations also..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So i have been doing some summer maintenance and checking things out with a good scanner. Looks like my bank 1 is way out of wack at 11.2*, bank 2 is 4.3*. I guess i will be dropping the motor this winter.
Question is, what else should i be fixing? The car is a mk1 with 200k miles and i was already planning on a rms, injectors, coils, tubes and plugs. Im gonna add cam pads and probably tensioners. Should i consider chains? Not sure how much more work that adds. I did some searching on the subject but most posts are over 5 years old. Also, im not getting any codes so im no overly worried about driving it this summer,
Replacing the chains would require a pretty comprehensive teardown of the engine. I'm nearly done rebuilding a 5-chain 3.6L M96 and 3 of the chains are installed before the two case halves are mated. I'd imagine you'd have to split the case to remove them, too.
According to people much more knowledgeable than me, large camshaft deviation on 5 chain motors is due to worn out tensioner pads and such. On 3 chain motors it's due to chain stretch.
You should not have to disassemble the motor.
You can replace the two short chains while you are replacing the pads, they are the ones that wear the fastest/most anyway, and lead to cam deviations also..
I wouldnt drive it. You might already have eaten away into the metal, well past the pads. At least thats what I was told by a mechanic that replaced mine, which were already worn at 64k miles.
It would be equivalent to -5.5 and -2.25 by the cam measurement. You have an absolute value delta of 3.25, which is not too bad, but still worn, as a delta of 6 between the two banks is the max recommended. FSI recommends 4 as their max, but I understand that the delta between the crank and cams is also important, and could point to the IMS tensioner also needing to be dealt with.
Based on your mileage of 200,000, I would think you would want to have a complete engine rebuild at this point and stage. Unless ALL those miles are highway miles, you can probably keep driving on the highway to 400,000. But Ive seen plenty of cars that need engine rebuilds at 60k, 80k, 100k miles.
Most engine wear occurs at startup. If we knew how many startup events your engine has on it, we could make a better recommendation. But Im guessing if you only do a partial rebuild today, youll have to do a full rebuild not long afterwards. It would cost more to do a partial rebuild or repair today, in the long run.
Nice, thx for the interpretation of the numbers. I guess its not the worst of engines out there. Im sure the pads and tensioners have been done before based on the milage but i dont have any service records. Im just hoping to keep this engjne gong for a few more years so ill probably just add the ims tensioner to the list
