So, final answer - I removed all the black sockets from the hardtop itself, and used a drum key to push them on to the white pins already on the trim piece.
Leading evidence: 'Use drum key' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair ....again' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I could not find any answers searching Rennlist, but I found something on Renntech that says "the old plastic clips are no longer usable and must always be replaced".

Do I need to replace all the clips to get it right?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys
I am getting my hardtop ready - mine came without mounting posts installed, so I pulled the interior trim piece off to get at the electrical connections for the defroster. I was pretty careful, and managed to get all the clips off without breaking them. Now the problem, I have everything back together, but I can't get the clips to resnap? Is there a trick to this? Do I need to replace all the clips to get it right?
Thanks
pf
I guess I can get new ones, they are about $2.50 but I need a bunch.I suppose I can swing the $20 or so, but I am surprised that they need replacement
here is a picture of the clip - it is a two piece deal.

You are saying it is a one time use item?
LOL, it's only one time use if it's broken or bent in any way. Otherwise, be friendly to the earth and reuse them. They're not like 1 time use stretch bolts like you find in cylinder heads. No need to overcomplicate this for others.
If they are in good condition, you may have to work on your fastening technique or make sure things are lined up correctly.
From using similar clips (on bikes/other cars): the tips sometimes deform/flare out and will no longer do the job right (not snug or tight enough anymore). Then you're faced with a nagging issue which may require you to remove/replace/repair....AGAIN. My 2 cents. Best of luck.
Thanks everyone. I just cannot get them to re-snap! I am trying with the pieces outside of the car and a pliers and it won't work. This is a two-piece connector, one white and one black.
I could not find any answers searching Rennlist, but I found something on Renntech that says "the old plastic clips are no longer usable and must always be replaced". It appears the black part may deform on first use, rendering it un-reusable? I wonder why use a design like that? Is this on the hardtop only?
So, for the archives, I have ordered new ones. Not that rough at $2.50 a piece, but I wish I figured this out before I removed panels out of curiosity, assuming I could snap them back in

OK, I know this isn't the most interesting thread
But, since I'm more of a lurker, and don't have a lot of technical knowledge, this might be my once chance to contribute something useful - if someone has a similar problem down the road.
After reading alpine's comment, I tried again to snap them together out of the car. Putting the white piece point up on the table, I put the black piece on and tried to snap. No good. Using a tool for leverage, in my case a drum key, but a small nut driver or socket would work, I tried again. This time they snapped together - alpine003 was right.
Still, I can't imagine being able to get that amount of force by pushing on the trim - too much flex in the plastic, I'd break something else first. No room to stick a tool inside to directly apply force on the clip when installing the trim either. So, I tried just installing the previously snapped clip into the metal slot in the hardtop. It stuck in there fine, probably would be better with a new clip, but will hold the trim nice and snug.
So, final answer - I removed all the black sockets from the hardtop itself, and used a drum key to push them on to the white pins already on the trim piece. Then, I clicked the trim in, one clip at a time, and it went fine, just like you would expect. I suppose, alternatively, you could try to remove the two pieces as one unit when removing the trim. Oh, in case you don't know, a drum key is basically a small t-handled nut driver, for a 1/4" square nut.
So, I'm all good, hardtop is ready to go on. But, why the hell did Porsche decide to make a break away two piece clip like that?
