Owners who are filling the engine with oil and using the e-gage or dipstick in older models to "measure" the oil are doing it wrong.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I am getting to know the car and how the oil level reads (electronic and dipstick). So the manual says get the car up to operating temp then take the reading. I just changed the oil so I know it was the appropriate amount. Full on the dipstick after running it up to operating temperature after the oil change. Let it cool down over night and it was a cold night. about 25-30 degrees (happened to leave the garage door open all night. doh!). So in the morning I checked the e-gauge. It showed 2 bars above the low line. I told myself not to put any oil in. Check it at temp. So got to work and check. Sure enough, e-gauge showed full as well as the dipstick. This is interesting if owners are filling when cold, the warm oil level could be significantly overfilled? If I would have filled it, I would have been at least 1-1.2 quarts high potentially. Thoughts?

Owners who are filling the engine with oil and using the e-gage or dipstick in older models to "measure" the oil are doing it wrong. The proper way is to bring the engine up to the specified temperature, drain the oil the specified amount of time, then add the specified amount of oil then confirm the e-gage displays the expected reading (full in the case of my Turbo). If someone drains the engine cold, fills it cold until it is "full" of cold oil, he will find the engine is overfilled with oil when the engine (and oil) is up to operating temperature.

No. Read the manual. It says run the car to operating tempreature, wait "a few minutes", i wait about 5 and checkmthe oil level. If its low, add oil, if its a little over, dont sweat it. It doesnt matter how much oil you put in it after an oil change. This is the proper procedure for getting the oil level correct. Come on Macster, you always advocate following Porsche specs, the oil level check is not rocket surgery.

The owners manual is not the final authority on how to service the car. Just as it does not reflect the correct oil to use. The proper oil change procedure is not rocket science or surgery as you put it, but it should be done right. One can only rely upon the electronic oil level system after he has verified it works properly but putting in the correct amount of oil and confirming the system shows the correct level.

You do realize that the oil indicator only represents the top 1-1.5qts of oil, right?

POST 7Original post

That's the shortest Macster post I've ever seen. I feel cheated. He left it at 3AM. Rest up and give the people what they want!

BTW, I don't have a long ratchet handle. I put on a leather glove to protect my hand from hot oil and cover that (on the same hand with the leather glove) with a latex glove to prevent the leather from soaking up oil. Just me.
