Leading evidence: 'broken motor mount' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'broken motor mount' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check contact plate' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Of course you will want to make sure the ground cable has been disconnected for 15 min or more, etc.

I just replaced clock spring to fix an airbag light problem (code 21].

Suggestion
Hmm, on mine the alarm will go off if I disconnect the battery with the key out, so I need to turn the key to first position and then disconnect negative cable to avoid the alarm going off.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Until you get it resolved, pull fuse B3 or unplug the wires to the horns.
So it appears my 00' C2 coupe has developed what is probably the most hilarious mechanical issue I have ever come across. Under hard braking my horn sounds. Started about a month ago and has been getting progressively worse. I could be out and about driving spiritedly and need to slow for a traffic light aannddd all of a sudden Im blaring my horn at the vehicle in front of me at a complete standstill and getting all sorts of dirty looks. Or at my last auto x event where I received a new award for the most horn blows during a lap.
I did some research and it seems as though this is a fairly common problem with bushings or springs on the air bag retaining frame wearing out and the weight of the air bag allowing the contact patches controlling the horn to close and sound the horn. I believe that the part I need to order is

but want to confirm before I place my order.
Can anyone confirm this for me, it would be greatly appreciated.
-The horniest 996 driver in the North East.
Should be the one assuming you have a 4 spoke wheel. Suncoast has it for $70. Make sure to order with your VIN # and they will tell you if the part is not correct.

Great post!
I used to get an electrical shock when I would activate the horn on my TR6, but that was Lucas Electronics, so it was not unexpected.
Your horn feature is only good for the driver ahead of you who doesnt go when the light changes green.
But my wifes cars feature is only good for the A-hole driver behind her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD0rcnYLGAM
I had this problem a few years ago and there were some threads about it. If I recall, all I had to do was take off the airbag section of my steering wheel and install some $0.10 rubber washers from Home Depot on the mounts and the problem was solved. Took about 15 minutes and haven't had a problem since.
Until you get it resolved, pull fuse B3 or unplug the wires to the horns. Better than ramping up a road rage scenario. It is amazing what ticks some people off.
I love it. Clever, simple, inexpensive fix.
If you do this, save yourself some hassle and just unplug the airbag at the yellow connector, and put the airbag off to the side while you work. Of course you will want to make sure the ground cable has been disconnected for 15 min or more, etc.
I had a friend who reported that his car (not a Porsche) had a tendency to activate the windshield wipers for one swipe when you stomped on the gas.
It turned out to be a broken motor mount. Under acceleration, the motor would react to torque by twisting to the side, which eventually caused wear in the electrical harness. An easy fix, once the problem was diagnosed.
No, not particular difficult. Always nervous to fiddle with the airbag so make sure to disconnect the battery and wait for 20 minutes or something. And it was a little bit hard to get the o-rings to stay in place, I think we used some silicone grease or similar to make it easier. Just take your time and it will be fine!

Hey folks - I tried to find an answer to this but still not sure - should the key be in the ignition when I disconnect the negative battery cable? Or does that matter? Thanks!
Key out. Disconnect negative battery cable. Let it sit (check the manual for duration) - I let it sit for for 20 minutes. Then remove the two torx bolts from the back of the wheel that hold it in place.
Hmm, on mine the alarm will go off if I disconnect the battery with the key out, so I need to turn the key to first position and then disconnect negative cable to avoid the alarm going off.

What? How can that be? The alarm system does not have it's own battery, so if the battery is disconnected, how can the alarm go off? Also, I would not disconnect the battery ever with the key in the run position. Everything is powered up at that point and disconnecting the battery in the run position is just asking for trouble. Do you have some type of aftermarket alarm system?
I have a similar problem with my 996 with 4 spoke wheel. I just replaced clock spring to fix an airbag light problem (code 21]. The airbag light is now off but my horn goes off continually when I connect battery. I have tried the o ring fix but it not work. Other than pulling fuse, does anyone have suggestions? Thanks.
Go back over the steps you took to replace the clock spring and check the contact plate again for the horn. If the O-ring "trick" didn't work, get a new plate. They don't cost that much.
Thanks for quick reply. I don't mind buying a new contact plate but I want to make sure that is the problem first. I am not sure I understand how the horn contact point works. I would appreciate it if someone could clarify three questions:
1) Could the horn being going off because I incorrectly installed the clock spring, pinching a wire?
2) Does the horn operate in such a manner that it is activated when 1 of 4 small metal contact buttons at each corner on the steering wheel but under the contact plate are touched? If this is so, the added o rings create plenty of space between contact plate and button so not sure why horn is going off.
3) When I removed the contact plate, the lower right corner bolt sheared off. I have left it in thinking the other 3 bolts would be enough to allow all the functions to work. However, could this be causing the problem? If so, any suggestions on how to remove the broken bolt shaft? I have tried pliers but there is not enough metal to grab. See picture. The bolt with blue circle sheared off.
