There are quite a few other tweaks you can make to the factory map - like lowering the temps the fans (slow, fast, engine bay) kick in, throttle/pedal mapping, I run 997 injectors so need to correct for them and alter the fuel consumption parameter so the mpg in the clocks remains correct, I run a few 997 maps, drop the idle target rpm a smidge as I've a larger capacity and it's happy to do so, obviously then there's the actual key maps for fuelling/sparks/cam timing/ventilhub switchover etc.
Leading evidence: 'Run 997 injectors so need' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). That or get into it more closely - learn how it all hangs together and how to adjust the specific parameters you want to for yourself.

I'll do another thread not to derail this one, and I'm not sure I really did need to go down this path, but wanted more flexibility over fuel tuning because my engine is quite modified, that and at the time I thought it would be nice to have a local tuner to me who I know map it and he's a big MaxxECU dealer (even though I've not managed to get it to him and it's been running for a year or two!).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I have successfully obtained my DME/IPAS codes and am wanting to switch to an ROW DME configuration so I can bypass the SAI and post-cat O2 sensors. I am unsure of what emission standard to select in my PIWIS III (clone) unit. I don't have a listing for ROW, but I do have EU2, and EU3 (there are a couple options for each of those as well).
Which one do I choose?
I won't be offended if you feel like walking me through it step by step. You don't know what you don't know, right?
Thanks!
EU2 is without SAI and without post-cat O2-sensors. It was how the 996 with M96.01/ 3.4 was homologated in Europe (and other countries) for MY98 and MY99.
I don't know whether MY2000 and 01 met EU2 or EU3 emission limits.
Meeting EU3 emissions required both of the above.
All 3.6 met EU3 requirements.
HTH
EU2 is pre-2001 models while EU3 required post cat O2 sensor for new cold start emissions regs. The EU2 tune should code out 2nd O2 sensor. The E46 M3 folks run EU2 to do this for the later years.
Well,
I tried programming the EU2 map with my Chinese clone, but everytime I go to execute, it says that it was not completed successfully. I have tried numerous times using both fast and slow and it immediately fails.
Any ideas?
Does flashing EU3 work? EU2 wasn't available on the 3.6 with its BOSCH DME 7.2 but only on the 3.4 with Gen 5.2 DME.
As such it could well be (and probably is) that the EU2 file isn't compatible your DME.
Justin, you may want to consider giving Rhonda at FVD a call. They have direct access to Porsche factory software and updates as well as custom programming given all the parts and work they do with the 996 for the track and street. Who knows, they may be able to get you what you are looking for.
For what it's worth, can confirm an me7.8/996.2 on the EU2 flash does remove SAI and post cat o2s - but is not the only way, it's not too hard to alter the existing file to remove them (and loads of tools can read/write the dme).
For SAI, just zeroing the expected airflow x volts map allows you to remove the pump and pass readiness checks which is really neat (you'll need to either alter eskonf, resistor the vac valve connector or leave that in place), post-cat o2s aren't too difficult either but you do need to alter some cat-related parameters (and resistor the heater wires or alter eskonf - just removing the heater dtcs causes adaptations to stop working).
Can modify or supply a file if it helps!...
For an 2001 c2 & a 2002 c2 cabs, that deletes SAI & second 02's... and anything else you'd recommend.
What software do you recommend to use with your files,,?
Thank you, awesome gesture....
I'll ping you the parameter space of a EU2 flash - drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send through - or if you prefer and you've a read of your current flash I can just make the specific EU2 changes. Earlier cars are me 7.8 min so a different software which has parameters in a slightly different location - but you can update to later software - and given the MY you're mentioning I expect they're me7.8 min. I'd recommend updating.
There are quite a few other tweaks you can make to the factory map - like lowering the temps the fans (slow, fast, engine bay) kick in, throttle/pedal mapping, I run 997 injectors so need to correct for them and alter the fuel consumption parameter so the mpg in the clocks remains correct, I run a few 997 maps, drop the idle target rpm a smidge as I've a larger capacity and it's happy to do so, obviously then there's the actual key maps for fuelling/sparks/cam timing/ventilhub switchover etc. and stuff like altering the fuel adaptation behaviour.
In terms of software, I've no specific preferences - and use piwis to get factory flashes on, but me7 is so old and so well understood that there are many - the only thing that I would say is that it's much better (and more reliable) to flash on the bench in boot mode than over the obd2 connector, and I prefer to checksum correct prior to flashing rather than on the fly.
I actually use a maxxecu as a sort of hybrid standalone alongside the original dme on my 996 (all inside the original dme casing) to do fuelling - maxx reads in most parameters off the factory dme over CAN and shares the crank and cam sensors and fires the injectors. This gives me much more flexibility over tuning fuel, I've dual WB over CAN and maxx does full load dependent AFR-based adaptation etc.
Quick update. Rented a second PIWIS system with adapter and it still fails to program. Ordered a VNCI PT3G from VXDAS and still operates the same. Looking into a Tabscan T6PT3G, as it is supposed to be just about as close as you can get to a factory PIWIS adapter.
Looking for any potential renters of said unit. I know its a lot to go through to eliminate some emissions components, but I am hoping that this saves cost and I don't have to worry about these components failing down the line.
I also have the V42.3/38.25 image uploading to the Internet Archive right now if anybody wants it. You will need to source the keygen to fix the imprint. I can't upload that to the IA, since it flags malware each time.

Does sound like a lot of work, I would be a bit careful of failed flash and getting stuck in programming mode if you do get it to accept flashing and you're having these problems - flashing over obd I don't find the most reliable on these. It will basically be bricked but can be recovered quite easily if that does happen, but not with piwis (the dme won't communicate with it). Have you dumped the existing eeprom etc? Would probably be a lot easier (and safer) to just get your binary off in boot mode and modify the required parameters, can send you eu2 parameters or help you through that.
Hey sorry about the delay, missed this. You can read the flash off using obd, putting the ecu in boot mode on a bench and using aftermarket software or by clipping/desoldering and reading the chip directly - but boot mode is easy and my preference.
There are 3 datasets of interest - the eeprom, the flash, and the ST10 chip. The flash is where the maps are (and if you have a dump, you can recover the dme if stuck in programming mode). Most aftermarket tools (the me7 is very widely used and so covered by lots of tools inc many chinese knock offs) can dump you all 3 on the bench by putting the ECU into boot mode (which is straightforward but does require you to open the case). Once you have this and the capability to apply them to the dme, you basically will always be able to recover it to original. If you're upgrading and not just altering the calibration, you'd want to back up everything, but if just altering the calibration (i.e. parameters/config on the flash) you only need the flash.
No worries on the delay. Can I do everything with one of those Chinese mpps tools like this one (
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mKa5e5S
)? If I can do everything via OBD that would be preferred.
I've never used one but according to this looks like you can, but only in boot mode :
https://www.uobdii.com/upload/pro/fg...e1Tzl-SNsqq4VC
If you want to read over OBD, kess can read the flash. Not the most reliable though - boot mode is better.
Sorry to be a bother, but can you walk me through what tool to buy (I dont want to spend too much since this may be the only time I use it) and the steps to flash it?
I should be able to handle bench mode since the DME is easily accessible on the cabriolet.
Thanks again for your help.
Ha, I just don't want to be on the hook for supporting flashing efforts - the info is pretty well documented. But short version you basically use whatever generic flashing tool you want that supports the dme - chinese clones generally work fine but that's on you, pull the dme from the car, open it, apply leads to power/kline etc on the ecu connector and pin the boot pin when the tool is ready to put it into boot mode. Then to switch to EU2 file, you check what version you're running and replace the parameter area of the flash with the one from a EU2 file. That or get into it more closely - learn how it all hangs together and how to adjust the specific parameters you want to for yourself.
Normally TunerPro; I've built a decent definition. I don't really alter dme parameters much these days on mine because I've a maxxecu running alongside the original DME.
Very cool, thanks for sharing the helpful info. Im going to look into TunerPro, and maybe maxxecu too.
Are you able to adjust the coolant temperatures for radiator fan activation with TunerPro? Thats something Ive been wanting to do for a long time.
Also, what the heck How are you able to run the maxxecu in parallel with the original DME? Doesnt the DME throw fault codes because the engine isnt running how the DME sees fit?
And why would you decide to set up a dual ecu system? Is it for emissions? I once thought about having a dual ecu setup for my Honda, but I couldnt figure out how to set it up without either computer freaking out.
Yup, but you could do that with just a hex editor once you know the location!
I leave the original dme doing most functions other than fuel. There are a quite a few ways for a fuel-only set up - there's a flag to run it in a test mode where it switches off the injectors, or you can turn off injectors, error codes and adaptations etc. For me, rather than permanently turn it off, I've put resistors on the injector outputs off on a connector so I can switch back across to the factory dme just by plugging it back in to the injectors.
Whoa, thats a really nice setup with a lot of thought out into it! Thanks for sharing that info with us. Im very impressed with your work.
Just a quick question regarding editing the flash: wouldnt you also need a definition file for the hex editor? My DME is a Bosch 7.2 - does it use the same definition file as the BMW Bosch 7.2?
With all the help tim s is giving me, I'll produce a tutorial of sorts when I get everything together. Obviously it will include the disclaimer of "You're at your own risk, yadda yadda yadda". If tim wants credit, it will be given, if not that's fine too.
I think that this is one of those, you don't know what you don't know things, and everybody that does it has to learn it initially anyways.
I still have not manually edited the flash on the DME and am trying to do it through PIWIS. Attached is a video of the trouble I am running into each time.
You Tube
Regarding the end of the video, since it is giving me a target map "file" can I just use that one and do the manual programming without rules? Any potential obstacles that I might encounter post flash, or codes I may need afterward? I have the IPAS codes from both the dealer and PPN and both match. I do not have the 24 character codes for the remotes and also need to try and get those to relearn, as my remote lock/unlock does not work either.
Thanks for any/all help. I'm in middle Georgia (USA) if anybody has had success with remapping using PIWIS or any other tools if you want to lend a hand.
It looks like you are in Engineering mode ( I see lots of German not English) .... also looks like you are trying to go from LEV Tip to EU 2 6 speed? Is that right ??
I can't really see your prompts as they are just too small and very lightly colored... Sorry not much help I know...
