I find it helpful to take a strong flashlight and hold it up to the side of the expansion tank to check the level.

Suggestion

Since you probably do not know what type of antifreeze is in your system, get only some Porsche coolant, mix 50/50 with distilled water and fill the coolant somewhere between MAX/MIN.

Is there anything I should know about when topping up my coolant?

Use flashlight, there is fluid in the reservoir

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is there anything I should know about when topping up my coolant?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for responding, I'm not sure. I can't see any in the reservoir, but I'd have to assume there's some in the system. The temp was normal and no warning lights came on...

POST 4Original post

Same color and mix with demineralised water. I use "Total Glacelf Auto Supra" (which some say is the same as the Porsche stuff) and mix 50/50 with water. The 50/50 mix give antifreeze to -37c but more important it raises boiling point to 110c. The reservoir should almost be full, near the cap there is a max/min indicator where the level should be. Refill before starting the engine again! When the level goes too low there will be no water in the engine and the engine temp sensor will have no water to measure from which means the reading will not at all represent the actual engine temperature. There is a coolant level sensor in the tank, at the back, but I would not trust it 100% to give a warning.

Thanks, I hope I didn't bake the motor...

No water in the tank...FIND THAT LEAK FIRST! and I doubt that you lost that much water from the possibly cracked water tank.

POST 7Original post

Since you probably do not know what type of antifreeze is in your system, get only some Porsche coolant, mix 50/50 with distilled water and fill the coolant somewhere between MAX/MIN. Do not just put any ole coolant in there. Mixed coolants can congeal into a gel and cause really bad problems. As said, find the leak, but start with getting the right amount of coolant in the expansion tank. I find it helpful to take a strong flashlight and hold it up to the side of the expansion tank to check the level. No coolant puddles anywhere under the car? And get a new blue coolant cap ending in the P/N 04.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The water tank looks new and I ordered Porsche coolant. I'm making arrangements to have my mechanic figure it out, I didn't want to drive the car without topping up the coolant...No apparent leaks, pools, liquid in exhaust, lights etc, just the very faint coolant odor.. I'll take a look with a flashlight...

POST 10Original post

Did you check your coolant tank cap? And since not all is lost, maybe consider getting it back to the correct level and monitor, unless you're planning a long road trip.

Yes, that's my plan. I'll keep a close eye on it in the future, Joe, thanks for the info....

Someone may have not removed all air. Had to add 1/2 gallon to mine after water pump change.

Distilled water is the best coolant, top off with that unless there is a chance you will encounter 35 degree or lower temp before you find the leak source. That way there is no chance of uncompatable coolant mixing & wasting money

POST 14Original post

I would only top off with distilled if its a small amount, but otherwise, there is a reason why coolant should be 50/50 mix, including lubrication, protection of the hoses, corrosion inhibitor, and a decreased possibility of localized hot spots boiling and causing high pressure in the system. Those localized hot spots could also contribute to bore scoring, believe it or not, if the temp gets high enough to where the oil film breaks down in the surrounding areas near the bore. This would be a contributing factor, no matter how large or small, according to Hartechs white paper.

Anything's possible. Unfortunately, I spaced out on it and didn't check the level for a very long time...
