When reinstalling the camshafts, the manual tells me to put the crank in U6 position, install the cams, rotate the crank to OT and then tighten the bolts.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am replacing the camshafts on my 996 c2 2002. I have read the 101 projects for your Porsche 911. I just have one question. When reinstalling the camshafts, the manual tells me to put the crank in U6 position, install the cams, rotate the crank to OT and then tighten the bolts. Can somebody explain the reason for doing this procedure? Why not just install the sprocket on the exhaust cam with the bolts in the middle of the grooves directly (as happens when doing the proper procedure)? Robert

POST 2Original post

IIRC, at TDC some of the valves are open, so you’d be fighting the valve springs and stressing the cam shaft...which is especially dangerous given that most of the cam caps are in the valve cover. By turning a few degrees off TDC you get a spot where all the valves are closed, making installation easier and safer for the cams.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
