If the key is in the zero position, not run or start, I can't see any problems with disconnecting the negative lead on the battery.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My ignition switch failed. All the common gremlins. No A/C, no low beam headlights and of course the key is stuck. With the key stuck the power is on and draining the battery. I put my battery minder on and all good this morning. I can get a new switch and Im pretty confident I can swap it out. Do I disconnect the battery while the key is in the ignition? I have a feeling that this is bad to do. Any advice is appreciated.

POST 2Original post

If the key is in the zero position, not run or start, I can't see any problems with disconnecting the negative lead on the battery. Take the battery minder off first.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

All worked out great. It took me about 20 minutes. Somehow I was able to get my hand at the right angle and the screws loosened pretty easily. The switch fixed everything. Had to go fill up my gas tank as it was showing empty.
