Your third picture comes up a lot, but those guys want $700 each just for the speaker and enclosure, and they are only 6" so they recommend two.

I wired up a 10" JL in the frunk to test the sound, barely anything came through to the cabin.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hiya I have a 2000 996 Cab in desperate need of sound improvement. I upgraded the head unit, amp, speakers to all Alpine stuff and it sounds great...except no real bottom end. The car did not originally have the Bose system, but perhaps a Bose sub from another 996 might fit but may or may not be worth the trouble (different thread). I have had an Infinity Basslink in another car (a Jeep) and it is a fantastic unit. Not a ghetto shaker but really clean, strong, punchy low end for rockin out. I've seen it mentioned a few times in forums but without many details or pictures and most posts are several years old. Anyway, Infinity designed that unit to be trunk mounted but a local auto sound tech told me he didn't think it would sound very good in the Porsche. I disagree but would like confirmation from anyone who has had one installed (or even another similar powered sub) in the front trunk of a 996 or 997. Sine wave is huge so it theoretically should penetrate the cabin just fine but that's the question. If anyone has this install/setup and can share thoughts, details, or even pictures..it would be VERY helpful. Thanks..

POST 2Original post

Unless you create a port to channel air from your front trunk into the cabin, you are going to be terribly disappointed. If you have a front license plate, you might be able to hear it rattle every time the bass hits. Other than this possible effect, the Basslink will make absolutely no difference. Your front trunk, which is mostly sealed when the frunk lid is down, is separated from the cabin by a foot or so of space where the battery, heater core, and some other odds and ends live. If you found a way to link the front trunk airspace with a tube into the cabin, you might feel _some_ bass response - but it's going to be a sad fraction of what you'd get out of installing the woofer(s) in the same space as the audience. Trunk-mounted installs work because the trunk is typically only separated from the passenger compartment by the seat backs. In cars where there is more of a firewall (and less air can move between the two spaces), the effectiveness of the sub is greatly reduced.

POST 3Original post

I linked up with this Bass last time I was in Blue Mountain Lake. Very satisfying but just made rather high pitched slappy, splashy sounds.

POST 4Original post

If you put THAT in the front trunk, I bet you'd notice it. At least after a few warm days...

POST 5Original post

Actually, they are decent and easy to install if you have modest expectations. However, I had mine in a Volvo C70 with a pass though to passanger cabin. In a 996 drunk not sure would work as well.

POST 6Original post

give it a try. my whole truck pounds with my sub in the back seat, with a nice solid 3/4 inch plywood box

POST 7Original post

OP, I swear to you - as a guy who owns 2 basslinks AND a 996 - that it ain't gonna work. Now, if you have a spare hatch available...

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks ALL for the advice and comic relief. I think displacing one of the rear seats is the only real solution. This leaves the front trunk open for fish and other necessities.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 11728970

Personally I LOVE the JL Audio solution. No need to displace any of the rear seats. Only thing is it can be a bit pricey.

POST 10Original post

Nope will not work. Had one in a BMW rear trunk. If no open channel to cockpit- it will suck badly. Mounting any subwoofer has to be inside cockpit. Mike

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@Alpine03 I would also love that solution, except I have a cabrio. The top has to fold down into the space behind the seats. @996FLT6 The Infinity Basslink is specifically designed for trunk location, so they must work well in some vehicles. I believe the 911 has too much stuff between the front trunk and cabin so it may not work (seems to be the consensus). I'm hoping someone who has actually done this setup to comment. Oh, and thanks for the eye candy.

POST 12Original post

I wired up a 10" JL in the frunk to test the sound, barely anything came through to the cabin. On the outside, it sounded like a typical sub in a trunk, with minimal rattles (on my car at least), but I couldn't even tell there was a sub when listening inside the car. Don't do it. Ive seen subs that mount in the passenger side foot well, specifically for the cabs. That's probably your best bet.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 11730992

Yes, they are. For vehicles with a trunk and a "PASS THROUGH" to the cabin!

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 11730992

I fixed this for you, OP. I'm not just trying to be a buzzkill here - bass does not work the way you're hoping it will. Bass in stereo competitions is measured in SPL - sound pressure level. When there is no conduit between the location of the driver and the location of the listener, there is no way to channel the sound pressure. The woofer may be thumping away happily in your frunk, but the sound pressure is confined within the frunk, and you won't hear anything except loose trim rattling.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 11730992

Oh I didn't realize that. Then you have 3 choices depending on how much bass you want. Either the factory Cabriolet Bose option on the passenger side center console(or aftermarket derivative), passenger footwell, rear seat floors.

POST 16Original post

Probably the cheapest way is top down with front trunk hood entirely removed would work : ). Mike

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. I've been researching it online for some time and have talked to several custom audio shops. These solutions have all been mentioned, and of course not one of them less than $1500 including enclosures, amps, and installs. Your third picture comes up a lot, but those guys want $700 each just for the speaker and enclosure, and they are only 6" so they recommend two. That doesn't include shipping, not to mention an amp and installation. A local shop offered to build some for me..again same story just really pricey for what you are getting. With just 3-4 more inches (hold the jokes) of space, subs with twice the power and a quarter of the price would be easy. I guess I just need to decide how bad I want actually hear the bottom end of music.

POST 18Original post

Plan A. pick up a used 996 Bose box on eBay lot's of guys ditch them and go from there. Plan B. get a pair of FisterD's and make your own "music".

POST 19Original post

I have a Sound Ordnance sub ready to install in the back of my 996 where the seats used to be. I may pull out the factory carpet on the back firewall, install this, and then install some carpet/fabric over it so it's completely hidden. It weights less than 10 pounds - one thing I didn't want to do after deleting the back seats and lots of other non-essential stuff was start adding weight back in with a sub box, etc. It's no 15" monster, but it should help a little with low-end... Looks like this:
