Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

After that test the solenoid itself to see if its activating the vacuum.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

You should have a switch that looks like two exhaust pipes located on the left side of the console.
That is if you have a true PSE car. Are you sure you have it? Take a look underneath to look for some vacuum hoses on the muffler cans......if you don't see any chances are you don't have it. Or maybe your switch has been modded to keep the PSE on all the time.

The option list you posted appears to be from the VIN tool that lists options. I have heard there are some discrepencies in that.
Better yet, check to see if there is a bypass pipe on your mufflers with a valve on it. 2002 Carrera my friend bought from the dealer had the option but no button either. The valves were stuck on. you don't even have to lift your car to see them.
I have PSE and don't have a switch. There is a small connector inside engine compartment that I disconnected to keep the exhaust on loud permanently. Maybe the previous owner did the same mod? Ill try to find the picture showing this connector.
Many 996 cars with PSE don't have the switch. It should automatically open and close the valves at a predefined speed to comply with European noise laws. I think ithat closes around 35 mph and opens up again at higher speeds.
Closes the valves at 28mph and reopens at 44mph.
So either the OP has a vacuum leak or stuck valves with them left open or as someone else suggested, the PO may have modified the relay to remove the speed-sensitivity.
Here's a twist. i have an 04 C4S. When I press the switch for my PSE the exhaust goes quiet. I think the PO of my car had it wired the other way. Many times when I start the car at home in my garage (mornings), I switch the PSE to quiet until I get out of the hood. It's wired backwards but works for me.
Agreed. I have an early 2002 4S with the factory PSE and no switch. I am also aware of other 2002's without the switch. Not having the dash switch doesn't mean it isn't the factory system.
PSE by default is always open in the noisy position. The switche activates the vacuum solenoid valve that provides vacuum to the diaphragms actuating the valves in the closed position and making the mufflers quiet.
OP, you can do a simple test to see if your PSE actuator or flap is stuck from corrosion and/or if your actuator diaphragm is ruptured and no longer is able to hold vacuum.
Peek under the car and you should see s SS braided line going to your muffler. There you fill find the actuator arm. Push that nd see if it freely moves. If that does, remove the vacuum hose and push the arm in all the way then plug up vacuum nipple with your finger and see if the arm comes back out. The arm should stick in the current position as long as your finger is overnight the nipple.
Try those steps first.
If those are fine, you'll need to test to see opif the vacuum solenoid is receiving 12v at the correct speeds. After that test the solenoid itself to see if its activating the vacuum.
Some came from the factory without a switch and is controlled by electronics. Same thing for 997 owners with Sport Chrono package. A computer controls the flaps at predetermined rpm/speed/mode.
Ah, didn't know that. I thought all of them are supressed by electronics at certain speed range to meet the noise requirement in europe and in addition, there's a manual master switch to enable/disable it.
That is correct. My communication might've not been as clear. My point was that some came with actual physical switches while others did not.
997 sport chrono owners usually have to rig up a switch.
