Int condition a solid 8, some bolster wear on the seats, no tears, good carpet, good seals, dash clean, leather nice, with a few scratches on the drivers inside handle, and the shifter as usual.

If the mechanicals are equally neglected, the price is kind of moot as it could kill you on repair costs...

^ Funny you should say that - I read a post not that long ago where a guy was having to replace the non-OEM regulator with ridiculous frequency, so your 3x replacement cycle (at least for one 996 owner) wasn't that outlandish.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

By 'win' I mean you will have garnered the respect of your peers, and be able to tout your expertise among the cognoscenti.
2000 996 RWD. 88,000 manual trans. Guards Red/black. Options include sport suspension plus lowered 10mm, LSD, traction control, draped leather sport seat L & R, 18" lightweight hollow spoke rims, and some other radio codes.
Paint condition is a solid 8, maybe a bit better. Two very small dimples in the frunk hood, one small dimple in the roof. two semi-serious rock chips in front. Int condition a solid 8, some bolster wear on the seats, no tears, good carpet, good seals, dash clean, leather nice, with a few scratches on the drivers inside handle, and the shifter as usual. Engine bay is a bit dirty, but all there. Car starts quick, no weird noise, runs good, and sounds fine. AC/heat, lights, horn, wipers are all functional and in decent fitment. Stereo is upgraded with a power amp, new Rockford speakers and a kicker in the rear deck. Tires are like new. Quarter windows are dark tint, and rear window is med tint.
Drives solid, and tight. Good shift and clutch feel. No rattles, squeaks or thunks. Radio sounds fine, and accessories all work.
Recent work: New Sachs clutch, PP, TO bearing, replaced WP about 15k ago. Recent oil and filter change. No IMS upgrade, no RMS change, but not leaking anywhere either.
Needs: AOS soon, although no smoke at all. Headlight covers are going to need polish. The dimples need a PDR work ~ $150 worth.
Let the games begin! Gimme your best guess, and win a kewpie doll.
So you're buying from an individual seller and not a dealer? I think $17,000 is pretty reasonable. Given the fact that the IMSB hasn't been replaced, you might be able to get it for less. Maybe $16,000.
What are you going to see on a low-res camera phone posted to a website that limits the file size? Is there something I'm not aware of that a pic will help? The dimples in the paint are barely visible in person. The chip in the front paint is smaller than the button your TV remote. The wear on the seat bolster is hardly visible in a black car in good light, but it's easy to see in person.
Sorry, but the reason you go look at a car is because pics are worthless for determining condition.
Alrighty then, sounds like you have all the firsthand info you need to make a sensible offer to the seller. Best of luck
P.S. My apologies, I am respectfully bowing out of your guessing game, so sorry for the bother.
Let me know what you think low-res pics are going to do to help. I can get a pic off the internet and post it if you like. The body work is just like every other bone stock 996 with twist rims. The interior is just like any other black 996 with sport seats.
Based on all the detail, descriptions you already fall in love with this car and just waiting for a little reassurance, but your decision to buy it, has been made, you can do all of us 996 owners a favor and start sky rocking the prices and pay $30000
, about the IMS if the car has 88000 miles it won't fail, just make sure the owner has not been in contact with someone from Dallas hospital, the virus can survive in the car interior for 21 days so good luck!!!!!!!
Doc....I am new at this game also...but very happy I posted about the purple one....I did not know how cheap these cars were getting, I thought $20K was more where it should be just doing one night's research.....but after doing more research, I see that $17K seems to be closer.
The purple car has its issues, but it drives and looks fantastic!
I will wait until I find a close to pristine car for great money.
I think prices on this website are a little deflated from the real world. I still see 996 narrow bodies well over $20k sale price. I know that is asking price. If you can score it for less $20 it's a good deal. If you get it at $17 it's a great deal. I would do an oil change pre purchase.
Prospective buyers should also factor COST TO OWN (aka maintenance & upkeep) when shopping for any car (not just a Porsche) and not fixate on THE PRICE TO ACQUIRE one.....specially if one does not wrench or DIY.
Case in point: an OEM window regulator is listed for over $600 and if you're a plastic mechanic, tack an extra $600 (give or take) for labor.
I AM BY NO MEANS SAYING THAT A CHEAPLY BOUGHT 996 IS A TICKING TIME BOMB WITH CATASTROPHIC FAILURES COSTING $$$$ WAITING TO HAPPEN.
Ask $20k and expect $16.5k or a little more if you find the right buyer..
If you don't get your magic price, then hold off and sell it in the spring.. Prices usually drop as we approach winter.. Less potential buyers..

Well, I think the real reason you post pics is because we likey pics. Plus, I am always amazed at the things others catch in a photo that I overlook. For example, some sharp-eyed Rennlister might notice drooping tailpipes indicating a need for motor mounts.
Watch & learn - I'll post a pic of a really nice speed yellow 996 that for some reason I'd really like to buy. Let's see how many well-reasoned and helpful comments we get:
Confused? OP...are you buying or selling? A few months ago I sold my 03 C2 Cab, Guards Red over black with 70k miles. Got a primo price. Guards Red cars go for a premium because everyone knows they are the fastest.
I agree. I think $19k-$20 would be reasonable. The dealer I bought my 2002 Targa from currently has a 2003 Cabriolet with 34k miles and is asking a whopping $38,900 and we're heading into winter no less.
Whot?!?! Gotta make a trip up next week sometime.
Don't want a C4 if I can avoid.
Sounds like the consensus is around $17k, which is pretty close to what I figured. The car is advertised somewhat above that, and at this point th seller isn't moving much but he hasn't sold it yet either.
Sounds like a so-so car cosmetically that was not really cared for. If the mechanicals are equally neglected, the price is kind of moot as it could kill you on repair costs... Dark tint and subwoofers also kind of hint that it likely wasn't owned by some doting PCA member (o.k, call me a profiler), another reason to steer away.
In my experience, most 996's that are cosmetically fantastic (not talking a quick detail job) also had very attentive owners looking after the mechanicals as well. Find one of those...
It's a 2000 with LSD? That's pretty rare. Also, are they definitely sport seats like the ones in the attached picture? Those two things would increase the value a bit. Given the dents and dull headlights, $18k might buy it, though I would want to see proof of the clutch and water pump.
I spoke to the shop that did the clutch and they are a pro shop with receipts. Had no problem discussing the car and the job with me. I touted that I might take it back for the IMS work but at the mileage I might just keep driving with a chip detector in the pan.
The seller isn't completely clueless, but he's not a dedicated Porsche guy. He's just a playuh with a bright red car. I figure with my shade tree skills I can do all the stuff except the PDR. My plan was to take the trans back out, do the AOS, IMS and RMS all at once and just monitor the water pump. Maybe do the water pump next spring before hot weather season.
Any more guesses? Most are actually pretty close so far.
Well, I have one of the lesser Ferrari's and had a Lambo for a while, I also have a decent plane - so I know something about COST TO OWN. But thanks for helping out.
BTW, a non-OEM window reg for the 99-05 996 is $107-240 plus shipping from various sources. I guess I'd go with that and plan on a 3x replacement cycle unless the part is made in China.
^ Funny you should say that - I read a post not that long ago where a guy was having to replace the non-OEM regulator with ridiculous frequency, so your 3x replacement cycle (at least for one 996 owner) wasn't that outlandish.
Hopefully his experience was one-of-a-kind, because I'm damn sure going to go with an aftermarket part when the time comes to replace mine...
Doc, stay away from the 2000's. That's some of the worse 3.4's for their particular issues. If you have not read about them, I can explain the reasoning.
Man, you are soooo close. Substitute 'kilos of blow' for 'bottles of Mad Dog 2020', substitute '1 hooker' for 'toothless Jim behind the Shells station', keep the yak and you've got it!
Asking price is $18,980. I offered $16,500. It was rejected. He said maybe $18k, and I said call me sometime before Nov we can talk.
