I just replaced the brake light switch in my 2003.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, all! It's been a while since I was last on the forums, but hopefully I'll be on more often as I find time this summer to do some Porsche projects. Speaking of projects...
Yesterday I removed the wheels on my car to give the insides a thorough cleaning, and while I had the wheels off I touched up the paint on the collar of the rotors (the part that flares to the wheel). I placed painter's tape over the calipers while I was working, but some may have gotten on there.
This morning when I cranked the car and then released the brakes they "popped", likely due to a little overspray of paint on the rotors. I didn't think a thing of it, took things slow for a few minutes to make sure any overspray was removed from the rotors. However, after driving for 20 minutes or so I noticed a reflection of brake lights on the spoiler in my rear view mirror--and I wasn't braking. I pulled over, and sure enough, my brake lights and third brake light were staying on even when the brake isn't depressed.
Due to the work I was doing yesterday I assume it is likely something I may have done. I washed the calipers prior to touching up the paint, so perhaps I dislodged something? Could overspray have caused an issue? Although I've changed rotors and pads numerous times, I don't have much familiarity with the braking system electrical side. Any thoughts/input of what the culprit may be would be greatly appreciated!!!
Yes. Sometimes it just gets out of adjustment, and sometimes it goes bad and sticks.

One of the plunger switches is for the brake lights and one is to disengage the cruise control upon stepping on the brakes. They are up near the top of the brake pedal lever. Might be a good idea to give the plungers a quick shot of silicone lubricant before you do anything else. You can check the operation of the plungers by simply moving the brake pedal to see what is happening.
Thanks, Joe! Today is the first day I've had some free time on my hands. I've tried reaching up under the driver's foot well to see if I can reach them, but it seems awfully tight in there. Before I make the mistake of messing something up, is there a "proper" way to access them, or can they be accessed from under the driver's foot well? Funny that you mentioned the cruise control... my cruise control has always been sketchy. It almost always works the first time I engage it when I'm driving, but after that first time it doesn't work again. I just don't use it very much so I've never looked into it.
I just replaced the brake light switch in my 2003. Unplug, grab and twist. Install of new is reverse of that. Easy peasy, took all of 2 minutes and at $20 part. I did not change the cruise switch as it appears to be working fine.
There is the footwell outlet vent you may need to remove. If I remember correctly it just pulls off.

I have a 2002 Boxster the brake lights will not go off. I have replaced the brake light switch and brake lights are still on. I have pushed the plunger all the way in and all the way out on both the new and old light switch and the break lights remain on. The only way to get them to turn off is to unplug the brake light switch from the cable but if it is plugged into the cable and just dangling brake lights are on. Any suggestions???
What the brake pedal switch does is provide a path to ground so the lights come on. The brake lights are powered with 12V all the time. Maybe you have to check if the wiring is chaffed somewhere around the brake lights that is grounding the brake system.
Do your four way flashers work?
Did you change out the correct brake pedal switch? There are two, one disconnects the cruise control when the brake pedal is pushed, the other one is for the brake lights. I'm running out of ideas.
