Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Driving along and the gas gauge will hit zero off and on. Light flashes and the warning "failure of fuel level indicator" comes on. I'm not sure if there is a pattern yet as to when it happens. If I just keep driving it comes back on. The dealer took out the sender unit but really could not pick up a problem with it. (They moved the float up and down and watched the resistance.) The dreaded thought of a cluster replacement has come up (not under warranty anymore). In that case I might fill it up and trade it in! Anyway, suggestions and/or commiseration welcome!

POST 2Original post

Jon, that sucks! (commiseration part is fulfilled) Sorry, I don't have any ideas how to help. (suggestion part remains unfulfilled)

Hey, thanks. I am starting to see the up-side of "I used to own a 996."

POST 4Original post

I have not tried but if you google there are shops specialized in culster repair (for a few hundred dollars I think). But if it's intermittent, your shop may not be able to replicate the problem so I don't think you can rule out the sensor 100% just yet. Sounds like the instrument panel is not getting the sensor signal intermittently. That could be the sensor, all the connections between the sensor and the instrument cluster, or the instrument cluster itself. I think you need a shop very good at diagnosing electrical problems...

Don't think I haven't thought of that . . . .

I doubt I will ever own another 996. If I do get another Porsche, it will be a 997........................... probably in 2023!

POST 8Original post

Actually -- weak/loose ground connections can account for symptoms like this.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good point. The dealer removed the sender, but it tested OK. Cleaned off the contacts on the sensor and they reinstalled rather than replace. Perhaps just the act of taking this all apart and reinstalling will fix the problem. I'll let you know later. Thanks!

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just checking in again in case any of you has this problem. Given the gas fumes, I did not want to do this one at home. The dealer took out the sender unit and checked the resistance as the float moved along the contact. It tested OK. Rather than replace the part, they cleaned it well and replaced it. Ever since it has been working fine!

bad connection? sometimes sh*t happens.

POST 13Original post

I have had this issue on my track car. Each time it has been a loose connection and fairly easily repaired.

POST 14Original post

Bringing this up, as my current car has this issue, was the contact at the sender bad, or at the cluster? What's involved in getting to a sender (C2)? Thanks

POST 15Original post

OK, update. It ended up being the fuel level sender, replacement made the error message go away and the gauge reads correctly now. This is on a 2002 C2 996 with 88k miles as of the repair today. One of the level sensor wires had broken on the assembly, also the lower part had separated from the upper assembly. Not a very hard job, but somebody got pretty creative in the routing of the hoses in the tank...

POST 16Original post

Anyone else have this problem recently? I was driving with just under 1/4 tank when I got a fuel level indicator failure on the display under the tach. The needle then dropped to 0 and the red low fuel light started to flash. It flashed for a little while than stopped. I filled up the tank, it seems to be working now. I suspect it will probably fail again though next time a reach under 1/4 full. Maybe unrelated, but just before the failure I could hear a strange noise from in front of the dash. It sounded like the stereo was on very quietly, but it was off. Is the consensus I need a new sending unit? I found a few threads on renntech that say sending unit is the culprit. I looked in the Pelican book, seems pretty straight forward to replace. Very convenient that I don't have to remove that tank. Any major differences since I have a C4? I think I access the sender from the metal dome in front of the battery, rather than under it.

POST 17Original post

One difference is your saddle tank has an isolated section that has no sensor. The amount of fuel in there is inferred by previous fill amount and usage. If you pull the sender with the tank less then ~1/2 full? you will most likely have to recalibrate the gauge/sender system.

POST 18Original post

I was able to swap the units pretty easily. The problem I've had since thought is it's very slow to start. I really don't know why. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
