Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Never hurts to have the car's undercarriage inspected for any signs of pending trouble.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect any signs of pending trouble' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'way a car gets driven has an effect also' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect any signs of pending trouble' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I ended up changing my sways to adjustable ones but I still have the ROW M030 sways that came with the X74.

I chose to put off replacement...will inspect periodically.

If he does my advice to you would be to just have the offending item or items replaced with factory parts.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

An eleven year old (2003) 996 with just a hair under 40,000 miles. One previous owner so the first 39000 miles were done by a stranger. The car looks and drives very nice...however I'm wondering what time/age does to items like suspension bushings, ball joints, swaybar mounts, shocks, etc. I'm having the dealer go through the front end tomorrow just to make sure everything looks kosher. My personal style is to stay factory OEM and not modify the car. I'm also guessing that this could increase the cost of parts substantially. So are there replacement parts of factory quality that stay at or near factory specs (in terms of ride) but that do so at a better price than at a dealer?
ROW M030 setup from Sunset Porsche. Designed by Porsche for our 996s. Will transform (and lower) your car. I have the x74, which is more aggressive than the M030 but it's NLA.

I have to agree pcar parts are the way to go. The M030 is great, I also had the X74. It was plug and play pure joy. I ended up changing my sways to adjustable ones but I still have the ROW M030 sways that came with the X74. I would sell those for cheap if interested. Regardless any suspension upgrade makes your car feel the way it was meant.
At 40,000 miles I wouldn't bother for at least another 20,000 miles, the car isn't
that
old yet.
I'd be weary of a dealer wanting to sell you a complete suspension replacement. Enjoy the car for a while longer.
FWIW, during a recent "up on the rack" annual inspection at my dealer, the tech said my 76K mileage 996 was ready for sway bar links (996-343-069-04) due to wear. Dealer parts cost = $125 each/two required.
I chose to put off replacement...will inspect periodically.
A quick preruse of the Pelican Parts' website indicated that they have TRW, an OE supplier, sway bar drop links for $36 each. Go figure.

The stock suspension on my 2000 w/ 27k miles was SHOT and floaty. The weight of the car sitting on the suspension for 14 years wears it out, regardless of miles.
Got the ROW M030, and kicked myself for not doing it until now! Major transformation, makes the car more awesome!
'05, 56K miles, living in hot, humid, salty climate which accelerates ageing of rubber and plastic. Supension just fine so far. I suspect the way a car gets driven has an effect also. Potholes are few and far between here. As are curves and hills
IMO, there are 3 things that don't do the car justice and will transform it once replaced - the stock shifter, the USA stock suspension, and the stock exhaust.
997 shifter + Row m030 + Fister muffler are the best bang for the buck.
Never hurts to have the car's undercarriage inspected for any signs of pending trouble. Generally pending trouble is signaled by torn dust boots/covers.
On my Boxster (now with just over 286K miles) just the CV boots have failed and the front sway bar drop link dust covers failed.
No other suspension or steering or drivetrain components have failed or even shown signs of wearing out.
I have talked to the senior techs at my local dealer several times about shocks and such even explored having the suspension refreshed with the ROW 30 setup.
Techs talked me out of it. Said that as long as the shocks aren't leaking or manifesting other signs of trouble and the rest of the suspension is ok no need. Just a waste of money.
Additionally while the techs like the ROW 30 for the track they tell me it makes for a harsher riding street car. Since I like the way my Boxster rides and I have no interest in developing it into a track vehicle I elected to not have the ROW 30 setup installed.
For your car the odds are the tech will find nothing wrong. If he does my advice to you would be to just have the offending item or items replaced with factory parts.
You can of course elect to have the ROW 30 setup installed or even go aftermarket with everything from mild to wild to select from.
But you better be sure you will like the car afterwards. Not every one favors a street car that drives/rides like a covered wagon on steel shod wooden wheels.
Has anyone had old OEM Bilsteins shock-dynod to see how they hold up over time? They seem to hold up extremely well over time, but it's hard to know for sure without a direct comparison with brand new.
