Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
The fuel filter is due to be changed at 60K miles but it is small and I have this changed more often.
Leading evidence: 'be changed at 60k miles' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'be changed at 60k miles' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check any signs of fluid leaks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If tire wear uneven -- probably the rear tires are wearing on the inside edges -- an alignment is called for.

Suggestion
A general recommendation would be to get the car in the air and check for any signs of fluid leaks.

While I do not like to just replace parts *****-nilly check the coolant tank cap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey folks, new to the pcar scene...coming from Viper so this is a totally different animal. I have a 2002 auto turbo coupe with 25k on the clock.
A couple of quick questions from a newbie-
1. where can I get a soft copy of engine layout, shop manual, etc. I want to learn where parts are on this car and how it works.
2. why does the car start in second when stoping at a light or intersection, etc?
3. anything I should watch out for or check on?
Thanks!
Ryan
This is reported to be the link to a digital copy of the 996 Turbo factory manual.

Soft copies are scarce. (I found soft copies of the factory manuals for my Boxster, all 64lbs of them, at a cost of over $300. I've never found soft copy of the Turbo factory manual offered.)
Not sure why the Tip starts in 2nd. One possible explanation is because it can as the coupling between the engine and drivetrain is fluid and this starting in 2nd takes advantage of that and saves wear and tear on the Tip having to shift up from 1st to 2nd.
As to what to check? Well, I hope you gave the car a thorough check out before you bought it.
A general recommendation would be to get the car in the air and check for any signs of fluid leaks. While car has just 25K miles it is a 2002 car and thus 12 years old. My 03 Turbo (which I bought used with 10K miles in June of 2009) developed some leaks at around 30K/40K miles (6-speed transmission selector shaft seal). Later at around 100/110K miles a water pump leak, RMS leak, front diff axle flange seals, spoiler hydraulic cylinders.
Every place there is a hose fitting, line fitting, gasket, seal, o-ring or what have you should be checked. There are the dust covers on the front and rear axles CV's.
If tire wear uneven -- probably the rear tires are wearing on the inside edges -- an alignment is called for. With a proper alignment and reasonable control of one's right foot the rear tires should wear evenly across their tread face and last 20K (or more) miles. Front tires should also wear evenly across their tread face and last 40K miles. I replace the front tires every other set of rear tires on my Turbo.
While I do not like to just replace parts *****-nilly check the coolant tank cap. If it is the original (part # ending in 00) replace it with a new one with a part # ending in 02 or 04 (03 never saw the light of day). The coolant cap will leak and let water vapor escape and over time (about a month with my DD Boxster) allow enough coolant (water) to leave the cooling system that the low coolant warning light will come on.
Be sure the radiator ducts are clear of trash/dirt. You may have to have the bumper cover removed and these cleaned out. Be sure the body water drains -- located under the covers on either side of the battery box under the front trunk lid are free of trash and water can readily drain away.
I assume the engine oil/filter are ok? If not get this service done. I recently switched from Mobil 1 0w-40 to Mobil 1 5w-50 (not a typo for 15w-50!) for both of my Porsches. I intend to run this oil year 'round as it doesn't get that cold where I live and drive. Oh, I change the oil/filter every 5K miles. (286K miles on my Boxster's original engine. 126K miles on my Turbo's engine.)
Brake fluid flush/bleed is due every 2 years. Do not let this go.
Plugs are due to be changed every 24K (or is it 30K?) miles or 4 years. Do not run the plugs past their change by miles or time.
The fuel filter is due to be changed at 60K miles but it is small and I have this changed more often. I generally shoot for about every 30K miles. It is a small filter servicing a big engine that uses a lot fuel.
Be sure the engine air intake filter is ok. And probably it is time to change the cabin air filter. These can develop a bit of an odor if left in service to long.
