I removed the o-ring, filled the o-ring gap with Loctite 518 and a light coating on the plug past the o-ring area.

I believe I let it cure for 7-10 days before filling the transmission.

Suggestion
You will have to get a Mechanic to remove and measure the welch plug, source a suitable plug and install.Note;; you have probably lost a bit of ATF, may be a good time to replace the filter and new fluid.

While he doesnt work on Tiptronics, he recommended to discard the bad o-ring and use Loctite to create the o-ring.

Loctite also makes an oring kit using rubber stock and gluing the ends together with CA.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently purchased my '02 996 and have started fixing what was needed. A heater core, starter, and 2 coil packs later I am now onto a small oil leak. My question is what is leaking.
the pictures are taken from the front of the car looking back, on the drivers side. It looks like some sort of delete plate for a hose. The small disc spins and has about 1\16 to 1/32 of an inch thrust play. The disc is located on the flange the oil cooler is bolted to but on the opposite side.
Porsche of ann arbor suspects a rms failure but looking at other failures online mine looks to be in the wrong place and to small of a leak.
Maybe my orientation is wrong, but from your description and picture I cannot tell where that is on the engine. Drivers side looking back...okay. Here are two pictures of the rear of the 996 engine and I don't see anything like that.
It looks to be on a flage surface mating the bell housing to the gearbox.
I can't seem to find a picture of this out of the car to accurately describe the location. Or if the cooler is for engine, trans, or diff oil.
And no I have not purchased a manual yet. Was not prepared for the stream price tag.
^^ Gotta be... When he said "oil cooler" I was thinking oil pump... My bad...probably a tip with oil cooler attached to trans? My apologies to the shop...(maybe
)
You have completely confounded me. I've looked over Google pictures, engine parts diagrams, PET diagrams and parts lists, everything I can think of for a 2002 C2 996 with both either a manual or tiptronic transmission. I see no plate like that with hoses going to it on the bellhousing area. Those are probably coolant hoses because the tip ATF cooler is on the transmission. What is your engine number please..M96.01/02/03/04?
Where do I find this information?
Im perplexed as well. I can tell you this much the orifice that is leaking, with that disc in it, is very much obscured by what I believe is the trans pan. My original thought was to drop the pan and put a strong magnet on it to see if I could pull it out.
But that opens a whole new can of worms...

That disc you see leaking and loose is a welch plug. Unfortunately that mount for the oil cooler is a cast in part of the Tiptronic transmission housing on the 996.2 (MB 722.6 Tip) . (the 996.1 ZF Tip has a bolt on mount for the oil cooler.)
You will have to get a Mechanic to remove and measure the welch plug, source a suitable plug and install.Note;; you have probably lost a bit of ATF, may be a good time to replace the filter and new fluid.
Thank you Porschetech3. I'm confident I can tackle this as long as I dont need some specialized tools to remove it replace it. When I remove this Welch plug how precise of a measurement are these measured in and are they measured in standard or metric.
It looks like the way to do this is drop the cross member partially blocking the trans pan. Drain transmission, remove trans pan and anything else in the way under the pan, then tackle the Welch plug. Is this correct? Or do I have to remove the oil cooler to push it out from the back side...
Your measurement needs to have an accuracy of 0.025mm (0.001"). The size will be in metric terms since this is a Mercedes built transmission(722.6).
I would remove the transmission pan and oil cooler to gain access to both sides of the mount.IIRC the plug is to seal the end of the machined oil passage to the oil cooler. Remove the plug to see what type is used, several types plugs include a concave disk, a tapered cup type and a solid o-ring type that is peened/staked in place. I can't say that I have ever had to perform this repair, but since this is to the Trans oil cooler it could have a pressure up to 300psi, so a very good seal is required.
After a bit of thinking, a heart healthy amount of swearing, and 2 very dirty hands I was able to remove the culprit. If anyone needs I can do my best to document my steps. After removing the oil cooler I was able to push the plug out to find, thankfully, the o-ring was leaking. Any information about a part number here would be very helpful!
Remove the o-ring and measure the inner and outer dimensions of the groove to source the o-ring that way. Since this o-ring is not listed in PET it is not available through Porsche, and since this variation of the 722.6 is not used in other applications that use the Mercedes 722.6 I don't think you can find it by part number. Your best bet is probably to source it by size.
EDIT:: in PET page 360-03 lists an o-ring part #20 (999 707 388 40) that is NOT shown in the illustration that MAY be the o-ring for this plug. Measure to confirm. NOTE:Size is NOT listed in PET, listed at 25.8(OD?)x3.5 in Pelican, and listed as 18.64(ID?)x3.53 in another online catalog.
That's probably the one since it's listed as "O-ring for automatic transmission fluid cooler" on Pelican Parts website.

Looks like my 03 tip is leaking out of this same Welch plug. Any info would be appreciated in regards to the o-ring you used and if that corrected the leak. Thanks, Dave.
I just wanted to follow up on my results with this issue. I was recommended to speak with Stan at GBox transmissions. While he doesnt work on Tiptronics, he recommended to discard the bad o-ring and use Loctite to create the o-ring. I was unable to source the square profile plastic o-ring from either Porsche or Mercedes. I removed the o-ring, filled the o-ring gap with Loctite 518 and a light coating on the plug past the o-ring area. Im 90 miles in and no leaks.
518 should work as long as you let it cure a little bit before refilling. Loctite also makes an oring kit using rubber stock and gluing the ends together with CA. Never been brave enough to try it myself but it has been sold for years (former employee)
