- 60k major service: spark plugs, all filters, oil change (though it was itemized under the IMS Solution work due to the new spin on adapter and filter), and all of the inspections the service calls for.

Like you, when I was setting my eyes on 996's, I was looking almost exclusively at C4S.

One thing I have noticed is that some pictures of the interior show "beige" with PORSCHE writing, where as some (including my own) use a dark gray somewhat velvet interior with no visible PORSCHE writing.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
First post on Rennlist! I'm a regular(ish) poster on 911uk but thought I'd make the jump over here to tell you about something I've been working on whilst the production industry has ground to a halt with the pandemic.
There's very little press out there about the 40th Anniversary from the time - there's been the odd review in Porsche magazines since, but certainly nothing of any consequence I could find on film. So I thought it was on me to do something about it!
I've done my very best to be bang on with the facts but please do correct me if any have slipped the net. Anyway, enjoy!
There's a DeLorean vs 911 film on my channel too if anyone's interested

After over a decade of lurking rennlist, I finally muster the courage to register and...here it is, my very first post... Simply here to thank you for this very well put together review! (Also responded on the YouTube video directly). :-D
40AE #323 reporting for duty! (Just completed the purchase today, after a week long negotiations and PPI)
I just reached out to the dealer on that car yesterday. Looks like you got yourself a very nice example! I'm getting the itch to track one of these down. I'm feeling like their value is not going down in future. Congratulations!
Thank you!! (added post-edit... How rude of me to not thank you!)
I missed out on 2 previously over the years, always within a day or two of them selling.. Be on the lookout! Park Place has re-sold many of the 40AE's in WA (I'm the 4th owner of mine and #2 and #3 happened at Park Place, also). I worked with David Bruski.. The guy's a veteran. You can always get in touch with him and ask him to alert you the moment they get one in on trade.
Valuating 40AE's is more art than science.. Okay, let me rephrase that... Valuating 40AE's is more heART than science. If you know you want one and it is the right 996 for you, you'll come in as a strong buyer. Anyone who's just "curious" about them because of their exclusivity, but are open to any 996, might not be willing to pay a premium over a Carrera (or, in some cases, even a C4S).
There's no telling what their values will be like in the coming years... I expect there to be a bit of a temporary price correction during the pandemic, possibly spilling over a year or two, so the next time one comes along you might get lucky in that their values may have dropped a bit.
I'm not a collector and really fell in love with the 40AE years ago... Just, always missed out on the opportunity to be first-in-line when they showed up. So, to me, it going up substantially in the future is not a primary interest (but it sure would be nice to know it is at least holding its value!) I make no promises to keep it forever, as I'm as much of a broad-spectrum car enthusiast as the next guy, but if I can help it my next P-car addition will be exactly that, an addition. In a prior life I owned a 997.1tt. Amazing car, but I never emotionally connected with it. Sold it in late 2012.
Cheers!
Thanks for the insight. I've had several Porsche's over the years but the one I regret letting get away was my 1994 Turbo 3.6. I loved that car but it was like riding a bull. I can't remember ever driving it without touching 100mph. It's been 2 years since I let my Macan Turbo go and I'm getting that Porsche itch again big time. I originally was thinking 996 C4S but the 40 AE keeps pulling me in. I love the exclusivity and from what I've read the X51 is a really nice upgrade from the standard 3.6. I'm headed to Seattle tomorrow (getting my kid back to UW) and thought what perfect timing. In terms of value, I think the 40AE will not go down - but I know after all these years that cars aren't an investment. I've convinced myself that my next Porsche will be a super nice 911 that is at the bottom of the value curve. I'll keep on looking!
I have never had the pleasure of driving, let alone owning, a 964 Turbo. That must've been such an unreal car to own and drive! Like you, when I was setting my eyes on 996's, I was looking almost exclusively at C4S. I drove a handful over a decade ago and I thought it would make a great double-duty Porsche for me (weekend and occasional daily driver). I drove a 996 GT3 back in 2011 and really liked the feel of it... I wanted something in between and began to notice the 40AE... The more I read about owner's experiences the more desperate my search and disappointments for "just" having missed one became.
They're not exactly unicorns, but I think their appeal to a wider spectrum of 996 buyers makes them sell a little faster than most other models. If I happen to spot one I'll be sure to let you know, in case you haven't found it yourself already!
Love the video! I cross-posted it into the 996 40AE thread here on RL (
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...nd-faq-95.html
) and will be doing the same on the Registry website, FB, IG, and Twitter. Cheers! Ted
Just got my 40AE last weekend and I'm in love with it. Got it to complement my 993 as a daily driver. Has all the features of a modern classic to make it a bit more useable on a daily basis than my 993.
Congratulations! What day did you finalize the purchase? I finally drove my home this past Saturday 6/6! Nr.0323
Have you reached out to TAZ40JAHRE?
Enjoy your 40AE!
Got mine on June 6th as well! No. 0892
Haven't reached out to the registry yet. Literally just got it home and in the process of getting it licensed.
I fully agree that this model is the 996 sweet spot. I considered a Turbo but I strongly prefer naturally aspirated engines, and this model is significantly more rare (21,954 turbos produced vs. 1963 40 Jahre). It's even more rare than the GT3 (5,894 units), and is less than half the price. I think the 40 Jahre is one of the 996 models that has the most room to appreciate - seems like it's been relatively undiscovered.
I like the narrowbody proportions. Looks like a long, sleek torpedo. The colour scheme is super classy, and the aerokit very understated. I think the design represents the "best of the 2000s". The whole package evokes that era of the Carrera GT.
The interior is beautiful in dark grey full natural leather. Mine has the super cool hardback sport seats. The design of the steering wheel and gauge cluster is nearing perfection. I even like the simple layout and retro feel of all the buttons and *****. Easy to heel and toe the pedals (a million times easier than the 993). I also like the feel of the cable actuated shifter.
Performance wise it feels very solid on the road for a 16 year old car. I was amazed how it kept up with my buddies 991 GTS through the mountains. There's very few sports cars these days (or ever, really), that weighed as little as 2900 lbs. The VarioCam gives you a defined shift at 5500 RPM that unlocks that last bit of motivation towards the redline.
Similar to how the 993 has a characteristic sound of the door as it thuds shut, I think the 996s characteristic sound is that metallic noise when you pull the key out of the ignition.
I'll post an intro thread soon with more pics and the story/plan for the car.
I just checked the set of 40AE luggage I have. Theres no identification anywhere on who made the luggage other than Porsche names in several places. I also looked at a copy of a Selection catalog I have dated holiday 2003. Again no identification of the manufacturer.
Thanks for the bit of info! Perhaps some day "one of us" will uncover the information...
One thing I have noticed is that some pictures of the interior show "beige" with PORSCHE writing, where as some (including my own) use a dark gray somewhat velvet interior with no visible PORSCHE writing.
Not sure if that was a localized markets thing, or just luck of the draw...
Congrats on buying Nr. 0892. I saw the thread you posted of your drive back with the pics...the car looks terrific! When you get settled please shoot me an email at

so I can get a few details from you for the 911 40th Registry. The links to the Registry website, FB page, etc. are in my signature below. Also, there's a thread devoted to our cars here on RL - you probably saw it, but here's the link:

I envy you for that terrific 4 day drive home with the car. Never had mine (Nr. 0711) on a long journey but you're inspiring me to do so!
Ted
Just got my 40AE back from having major "level set" services done (including the 60k major, though the car hasn't turned 50k just yet...). Many of the items I could do myself, but I really wanted to have that initial mark in the books come from a reputable shop (Chris's German in Redmond, WA).
Highlights:
- IMS Solution, RMS, clutch
- New AOS and Rauch & Spiegel aluminum coolant hose connecting piece
- 60k major service: spark plugs, all filters, oil change (though it was itemized under the IMS Solution work due to the new spin on adapter and filter), and all of the inspections the service calls for.
Car is running perfect. It felt great to begin with, but one thing I could tell was that the clutch was original... It felt healthy, but definitely 49k miles old...if that makes sense.
Very happy to have the car in a state where I know where it stands and I can continue caring for it from this point forward. Chris's German will continue to be my go-to for repairs, but I'll likely take care of ongoing maintenance.
Now, if I can find a tailor or someone good to repair the zippers on both my pieces of luggage. :-\
