Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Mine smoked like mad when level is at the top, I run about on both gauge and dipstick and have had no issues since.

they did an oil change recently and it is filled to the max-limit on the internal meter, so slightly more than recommended - let me check the dipstick, but you may be onto something!
Leading evidence: 'Run about ' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'no greater than' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check dipstick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

They probably used 10qts, i had to return to my indy once and make him drain some out.

Suspected cause
Hopefully, the cause of the OP's smoking problem is no greater than that.

Part of the process of replacing the AOS is to remove the TB, first crossover plenum and clean those up, as well as the intake manifolds.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So my 2001 996 C4-Tip (75k miles) had a bad AOS. My shop took a photo showing it was leaking, and you could not get the oil filler off with the engine running. Sometimes on startup I'd get a big cloud of smoke that lasted about 5-10 seconds. All sounds normal for a leaky AOS, right?
So I had it changed. Can confirm it is not leaking (from using a snake-camera to get in close) , and is hooked-up correctly (at least according to the shop who double-checked it all). And the oil filler now comes off easily when engine is running: But there is a change in engine note with it removed.
Anyway, I still get a cloud of smoke for 5-10 seconds. But not always. It is only after some "spirited driving" that it then smokes on the next start-up. I don't think I am pushing the car that hard - certainly at no time do I feel like I am ever close to losing traction. I would say "spirited" for me is like a 7/10. I took it back to the shop and they double-checked it all and couldn't find anything wrong. I am a good customer of theirs and have a good relationship, so I'm fairly certain they did the job right and would tell me if something was wrong with their work.
Any ideas? Could the AOS still be bad? Is there something else that can cause the start-up smoke after some fast corners? Thanks in advance!
Hmmm... they did an oil change recently and it is filled to the max-limit on the internal meter, so slightly more than recommended - let me check the dipstick, but you may be onto something!
Could be too much oil for sure.
My car was doing the same if the oil level was at the full mark, 3/4 mark I could see an improvement, mid mark no smoke at all. This is with the later style dipstick.
Do you have an early style or later style dipstick?
For reference have a look here:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ter-model.html
Look at the handle difference.
If you have the early style and its filled like this there is way too much oil!! Dont go high rpm's until you pump out some oil via the dipstick.
You can easily drain about 1 quart of oil by simply removing the oil filter and changing it. It is very common with a failed AOS that the intake manifolds are saturated with oil. Part of the process of replacing the AOS is to remove the TB, first crossover plenum and clean those up, as well as the intake manifolds.
Remove some oil, it was overfilled. They probably used 10qts, i had to return to my indy once and make him drain some out. See below:
i keep a copy of this saved in my phone so i can show techs who touch the car.
My Indy's mechanic overfilled my 2000 C4 Cab when they did an oil/filter change a short time after I bought the car and it smoked like crazy!!!
Took it back to the shop the next day. The shop mgr sucked some of the oil out of the engine and it didn't smoke anymore. Hopefully, the cause of the OP's smoking problem is no greater than that.
For what its worth, I always ask my mechanics to bring the oil to the middle of the dipstick. Then I fill it up from there as I see fit. My car never smokes, even at the top, but then again, I have an original AOS (I think).
Thanks for all the ideas. I drained about half a quart and now the dipstick is a little under max, and the dash display shows 1-2 bars below the "max recommended" limit. And... no smoke! Taken it out for a couple of "spirited" drives and no smoke on start-up afterwards. Problem solved... now onto the next one to solve
