I can definitely say that the IPD plenum was a noticeable change and it was installed before the elective build to 3.8L.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I just received and installed the OEM airbox from a 2007 Carrera S 3.8L onto my '99 engine to replace the very early generation "cold air" intake that I had. Everything that I have read over the years suggests that the "cold air" intakes are not really that good and that the best actual intake for the most flow of actual cold air is the 3.8L stock box and even Jake Raby seems to agree with that....good enough for me. So it is a straight forward install, a bit of plastic to remove on the airbox with a Dremel to clear the locking mechanism of the hood and it looks great with the 3.8L written into the housing which happens to reflect what the engine is now. So to my MAF question, it hadn't occurred to me until today but my thinking is that the MAF part numbers are different for a 3.4L and the 3.8L. The intake snorkel, and airbox are so much bigger on this new airbox versus the original 3.4 airbox and in fact the engine is also now a 3.8L, so that maybe changing the MAF models from 3.4L to 3.8L version would be beneficial to the measurement and adjustment of the air/fuel mixture. The 3.4L MAF is 996-606-123-00 The 3.8L MAF is 986-606-125-02 Any technical thoughts from the pro's out there?

POST 2Original post

When Jake rebuilt my 3.4 into a 3.8, I already had the 3.8 box installed with the 3.4 MAF. He did not change it. He also told me being a MY99, it was not worth spending money on a larger TB or plenum. I doubt it would make any difference.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I can definitely say that the IPD plenum was a noticeable change and it was installed before the elective build to 3.8L. Jake has mentioned numerous times that he believes in the performance advantage of them as well. The throttle body was bored out from 74 to 78mm because we aren't given any other choice with the cable throttle as none of the aftermarket or GT3 throttle bodies with an even larger bore will work. Did you get the stage 1 or stage 2 on your build and how do you like it! I find the additional torque a lot of fun to have.

POST 4Original post

Run the stock MAF. I've been running a 3.8 box with stock MAF and fuel trims and have been fine.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did you put the airbox on a 3.4 or 3.8 with the stock 3.4MAF?
