The previous owner installed an aftermarket head unit, but I want to revert to an OEM head unit.

I've installed a Parrot Asteroid - an android based head unit that can be rooted, and the Torque app is in its download store - works great for CANBus.

Suggestion
When you installed the Kenwood, did you also replace the amp and all the speakers?

So it is possible to just replace the head unit with a double din and keep the rest stock?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I likely won't change out my stereo for a while, but I want to start doing a little research so I'll know exactly what I want to do when the time comes.
I recently purchased a 2000 C2 with the navigation system display (double DIN). I don't want to lose the information that can be displayed (miles to empty, etc.) by the factory unit if at all possible, and it seems there might be a way to display that information on some of the more modern touchscreen head units. I've seen a couple of posts around the web, and maybe one or two in these forums, but there's very little information out there on how this can be done, etc.
What I would like to do is buy a head unit with adjustable coloring (very common) to match my interior lighting, be able to display the factory trip information, etc., and ideal have the ability to display custom graphics (I've seen one video of a unit that displays the Porsche logo when powering up).
If anyone has any information or experience in these matters, or if anyone can make and recommendations on head units it would be greatly appreciated!
This is a new one on me - I didn't even know the nav unit displayed fuel consumption data, though of course it makes sense. If nobody here can answer the question, you can find some great technical advice at mp3car.com...
The OBC option (fourth stalk on the wheel) displays miles to empty, mpg and a few other things. Display is below the tach. It can be added using a switch on the dash. With OBC added the stereo only needs to be a stereo.
I'm curious, do you want the new head unit for sound quality, to input digital music or cellphone, nav or for features, or all of the above. You can make it sound great with relatively cheap speakers and an amp replacement and keep the 2000 look to your console.
there are android stereos for the X5 that can read CANBus etc. I cant remember the 'brand' name but there is one that is more reputable. Not sure if they have a 911 version
Ditto--I'm curious about the OBC option. Is it a display screen add-on that looks relatively factory? And to answer your question, I'm looking for fully integrated bluetooth capability (right now I have an FM modulated unit). There are crutches out there, but I would like to have a system that mutes the stereo on an incoming call, and works regardless of what mode (FM, AUX, USB, etc.) the stereo is in. I'm not sure if there is a way to get that functionality with the factory unit still installed.
Chamilun--do you have any links to the sites? Exactly how do these work? Do they have FM tuning capability?
I've installed a Parrot Asteroid - an android based head unit that can be rooted, and the Torque app is in its download store - works great for CANBus. Super responsive to touch, but not without a few drawbacks. Relatively cheap for a high-end unit.
Search for OBC upgrade for details. I think you have the display - it's the digital speedo under your tach. The stock OBC option uses a fourth stalk but you can add a switch to your console for less time and money and it will perform the same functions. Once wired it works, no reflash or other software mod. It has been done dozens of times.
OP: There's probably info on 986forum about the OBC upgrade, also ... I think this is a fairly common hack for the Boxster guys. I actually have the 4-stalk column switch and wiring harness to do the upgrade on my 996, but I haven't installed it yet. There's also an article on the upgrade someplace on the Pelican Parts site.
I've looked into the OBC display, and it seems mine has already been enabled (I see the exterior temp). Looks like Pelican parts has a kit for $300, but you can buy only the stalk on eBay for quite a bit less. Anyone tried the "stalk only" option from eBay?

Yup--here is the link to the Pelican Parts page:

I've read that there is a way to add the fourth stalk to the existing 3-stalk switch, but I don't know anything about it.
I picked up a 4-stalk switch off eBay for $112 shipped, and got a pre-built harness for $45 shipped. The harness came from a fellow who has been building them primarily for Boxster owners. He also builds a harness for rocker switches, if you want to pursue that option instead of the 4-stalk column switch. So I'm all in for $157 and I won't have to build a wiring harness.
To resurrect this thread... my car originally had the PCM1 head unit. The previous owner installed an aftermarket head unit, but I want to revert to an OEM head unit.
In a 1999 996, what are my options? Should I just go back PCM1? Or, could I go with a slightly newer PCM head unit? I'd like to have navigation (even if basic and outdated, just like having a map to see, since I am new to the city I'm in and still learning my way around) and also would really love bluetooth for phone handsfree (and ideally streaming music to stereo from phone, via Bluetooth).
Ideas?
(also... if there are aftermarket head units that would be better for my needs, and don't look too gaudy, I'd consider those too)
This.
Old disc-based nav systems are slow, low resolution, have outdated maps, no traffic/accident/road_hazard/speed_trap data, no ability to stream audio, and will still cost a bundle to source.
New double-din turnkey nav systems are overpriced and still have some of the disadvantages listed above... Best solution is either a low-cost single din head unit with USB input (or a modified factory radio with aux in) with a tablet providing all the nav, data, and streaming audio functionality.
PFBZ - is that your interior? If so, is that a tablet installed below the air vents? With a single DIN head unit? If so, can you elaborate as to what the set up is?
Also, the seller of the car I am buying has the original PCM1 head, amp, and CD NAV drive, which had been removed. So I don't have to go buy the parts.
When you installed the Kenwood, did you also replace the amp and all the speakers? Since I have a 2004, I have the MOST system which means I would have to replace everything AND rewire everything. I really don't want to do that.
Is it possible to just replace the head unit of the car with a double din (I like the larger displays) AND KEEP the amp and speakers? I know the speakers aren't "great", but they are fine for me. My worry is that if the installers would need to rewire the car, they will inevitably break a lot of interior parts... And I don't want that to happen.
So it is possible to just replace the head unit with a double din and keep the rest stock? I know it's not the best scenario...
Ok... I have some suggestions on possibly keeping the factory system and adding some punch down the audio line:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_161LC8I....html?tp=61671
Everything would look stock yet you could still do a ton of mods on the back end like Amps... Speakers...
Thanks, but if I'm going to add any of the above, I might as well rewire the entire car. I don't care if the head unit doesn't have the "stock" look. What i'm worried about is some schmuck rewiring my car and breaking a lot of door panels and plastics during the rewire. So, I don't want to rewire the car. I want to keep the stock Blose speakers and stock amp. I just wanted to see if I can change the head unit to something more modern.
I'm not sure if you should have a radio as you may miss all those noises you've been hearing from your car lately which could be detrimental. Maybe a radio delete plate?
