Then I put stock mufflers back on and I was amazed at how much more I prefered the clean sound of the engine without all the special effects.

The tips are great and fill the bumper cutouts nicely on my 99.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd like to hear some comments on this, because this will be one of the first mods.
Tubi?
Fister?
Gundo?
Fabspeed?
Others I may not have found yet?
Performance tuning upgrades, seems that there are not to many plug and play applications, or am not looking in the right place. Any suggestions here on upgrades will be well appreciated.
I have a combination of PSE and Fabspeed cat pipes. Screams at higher RPMs and makes the car sound like a performance vehicle. Not the most inexpensive option but I'm happy with it.
Trying to "describe" a sound is counter productive, also considering "good" sound is subjective.
You're best bet is to browse through these files...

Add Cargraphic and FVD to the list. They sell complete systems. Headers, 200 cell cats and mufflers.
I have the same setup as Fernando above. PSE & fabspeed cats. Car sounds awesome above 4000 rpm. Only problem with PSE is no weight reduction.
I would describe the Gundo hack as a combination of the growl of a bear, the roar of a tiger, and the thunder of an F-16 flyby. Oh, and I think that's good.

I personally prefer the sound of the engine and not the tailpipes. In 1960 I put glasspacks on my '57 Chevy and thought it was real cool to make lots of noise. Then I put stock mufflers back on and I was amazed at how much more I prefered the clean sound of the engine without all the special effects. My RS America and my 993 both made wonderful sounds without any enhancements, and I now feel the same way about my 996.
As for performance mods, I would suggest that for real world street driving, and even for shorter tracks like The Streets of Willow in California, less is more when it comes to tires/wheels. The Big Wheel look is more fashion statement than performance mod. My 993 came stock with 16" wheels and with those tires/wheels the car was much more tossable on tight twisty roads. The 17s only added usable grip on the high speed section of The Big Track at Willow. On the streets they degraded the ride and pleasure of the car.
I went with the Fister D Stage III Titanium cans with the Speed Venture X-pipe and 200 cell high flow cats. I like the performance and the sound so for me it is win win
Check with john D over at Speed Venture for exhaust enhancements. I believe they are RL sponsors
I also am looking to beef up my stock exhaust...seen local shop called afterhours that has good sounding one on YouTube clips..I'm either going that route or fister
The Billy Boat mufflers with their headers soudns really nice. The same mufflers with OE headers/manifolds have a slightly deeper sound. The Fister D mod on a stock manifold '99 isn't as nice as my Billi Boat setup. The Fister D mod sounds too raspy compared to mine.
17's have a smaller contact patch than 18's. Width, camber, ride height, and suspension are all interrelated - throwing a smaller (or larger) tire on a car without adjusting the rest of the setup means overlooking most of the possible benefits from switching tire sizes.
Many 996 owners do not agree that the engine sound on the 996 is fantastic - which is why the aftermarket is rich with exhaust options for the 996. OTOH, not everyone wants a loud car. Rule #1b: DO what makes you happy. Rule #1a: Make sure the spouse is still happy.
Many of us 986 Boxster owners did the 986Forum "Crios Mod" - drilled a hole through the exhaust tip into the center chamber of the muffler - it was an INCREDIBLY cheap, fairly effective mod that made the exhaust snappier. (

). The point is, sometimes a seemingly minor change can make ENOUGH of a difference - so OP, consider DIYish things like the Gundo/Fister hacks before you decide to drop $2K on mufflers.
I am using as Mille Miglia exhaust. Low rumble at idle and definite note during normal driving, roars nicely during acceleration with no drone. The tips are great and fill the bumper cutouts nicely on my 99. I have the original mufflers and tips if anyone is interested.
I have the factory sport exhaust but my friend has a 996 without PSE.
We were working on his car this summer and while he had the mufflers off he decided to take it to a local muffler/pipe shop in Southwestern PA. He took a picture that he found on RL of the Gundo hack. The shop looked at the picture and took the job. They had it done in a couple of days and charged him $150. Below is the picture of the added pipe.
I was skeptical and a little concerned, but when we fired it up - Wow! It sounded Awesome! very similar to the PSE. Not too loud, but a nice low growl like the PSE.
A great low cost option.
