Luckily I just replaced the original black emblem with a Silver one - right on top of the ghost - and avoided the problem.

Mine had a dent and the body shop wanted $600 to repair ($100 of it was for a new Carrera 4 badge - they said they could not reuse the one I had).

I never understood what the point is to replacing the stock badge with something the car never came with from the factory, but for $50 bucks or whatever I guess to each his own.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

17 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last weekend I got the bright idea to remove my carrera 4 badging and replace it with a simpler 911 script I removed the old emblem easily enough but after 45 mins with a porter cable polisher i had burned through the paint on my rear deck and ghost image of the carrera 4 was still visible So I ended up having to get it repainted and put the new badge on today In retrospect it was a giant waste of time and money

POST 2Original post

This is what happens when you don't use Porsche electric hair dryers

POST 3Original post

what a bummer - it happens far too often - a little fix turns into a pricey debacle! (though, it does look nice!)

POST 4Original post

Look at the bright side. Now every one knows you drive a 911 and not a Carrera.

POST 5Original post

OP will also wanna do the Hurdi mod(P O R S C H E emblem on back) so that people know it's a Porsche and not a Mercedes.

POST 6Original post

I noticed the same "ghost" under my Carrera emblem. Luckily I just replaced the original black emblem with a Silver one - right on top of the ghost - and avoided the problem.

POST 7Original post

Depending on your paint color, fade may make that "ghost" permanent - bummer that you polished through the clear and paint.

POST 8Original post

If it makes you feel ANY better, I wisely decided to remove the paint protector on the right-hand side skirt - it was scratched where I whacked a cone a couple of years ago. Turns out the "scratch" was actually where the underlying paint was cracked, and I peeled off 1x2 inches of paint just ahead of my rear wheel. I currently have the chips taped back into place until I can get the skirt resprayed. I still have plastic on my hood, front bumper, and right-side skirt, so I might as well do them all before I head over to the paint shop. It was definitely one of those "shoulda left it alone" moments.

POST 9Original post

Money is not wasted. You now have a new rear deck lid that says 911 in bold new lettering. And many have done things more expensive than that. And any money spent on a Porsche is not wasted. It's a hobby. Once I crossed $40k into my 1999 911 I started to feel like I was wasting money that I would never get back. Took I guy I was working with who put $5000 into mods on his leased WRX that he has to take back off to teach me that lesson. It's cheaper than gambling, a mistress, or a divorce. Enjoy it and now you have a "home improvement" story to tell.

POST 10Original post

I like the uplifting commentary - but at some point the time and money involved in "I had to spend money getting my decklid repainted because I burned through it with a polisher" might actually fall into the "wasted" category. It sucks either way - but I bet OP had stuff he'd rather have spent $563 bucks on. Mistakes suck, and expensive ones suck even worse.

POST 12Original post

Since I got my 996, I been contemplating removing my Carrera badge, but the previous owner broke throu half the C , and did a **** poor job of applying the glue I guess- there's some 2 small "globs" of some sort of glue. (small but visible if you look) . Plus I was worried agains the ghost image . These threads don't really give the the enthusiasm to start through with it. OP your car looks awesome, **** happens sometimes, no use cryin over spilt milk. Enjoy!

POST 14Original post

Personally, I have never, not even once, screwed up any "simple" little fix-it project. . . . . Yeah, right.

POST 15Original post

I have to commiserate with the OP. I never understood what the point is to replacing the stock badge with something the car never came with from the factory, but for $50 bucks or whatever I guess to each his own. But $600 is a bitter pill to swallow.

POST 16Original post

I have an extra deck lid. Mine had a dent and the body shop wanted $600 to repair ($100 of it was for a new Carrera 4 badge - they said they could not reuse the one I had). So for $200 bought a used deck lid (arctic silver) off ebay and swapped it out. Now my Carrera 4 says Carrera (and the new lid came off a 2001+ so the badge is at the bottom not the top. Decided to try to switch badges and removed the Carrera 4 from the original deck lid to see how it would go. There is definitely a ghost image that with multiple buffs and polishes I can not remove. Decided to leave well enough alone. I guess it would have been more helpful if I posted this sooner.
