Another jack we looked at I've only seen in Ford pickups in certain years like 1998; internally it must be a screw that raises in sections, has lots of real lift capability but I suspect shares a drawback with RV scissors stability where if load force isn't completely vertical possibility of tipping over.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Highest 996 needs to be raised for maintenance is engine removal 22 1/2 to 26", and this can be done by post lifts, medium-lift scissor jacks, liftbars, and cribs. Post lifts may require professional installation with mandatory drilling and installing bolts into thick sound concrete, and take space and get in the way. Medium-lift scissors can weigh over 1000 lbs, take floor space, some require excavating large holes, and most have cross-beams precluding access to center of vehicle. Quickjacks don't lift 22" or more so are not applicable for full 996 maintenance. We don't have solid concrete for post lifts or extra space for medium scissors, so purchased Liftbars $325 with shipping, $558 for two Harbor Freight floor jacks and four 12-ton jack stands, and to increase safety margin for future lifts may get four 6-ton jackstands $100, for about $983 total including tax. To further lower cost, consideration was given to omitting liftbars by using multiple trolley jacks and jack stands at alternate 996 jacking points, and this was rejected due to lack of stability and possible slippage. Cribs are wood blocks stacked on top of each other to be placed under jacks and jack stands as the vehicle is raised, and their stability is questionable which precludes further consideration. NOTHING IN THIS POST IS A RECOMMENDATION FOR ANY TECHNIQUE OR PROCEDURE AND USER ASSUMES ALL RISK WHICH INCLUDES LOSS OF LIFE AND SERIOUS DAMAGE TO VEHICLE. Liftbar plugs into factory jack points, and scissor jack provides clearance to slip trolley jack under liftbar. Repositioned trolley jack towards rear because liftbar needs to be kept nearly level, and front of vehicle was much higher than rear when jack in middle. If on slope might help to reverse vehicle. "3-ton" jack stands on lowest setting 12 1/2" clearance to sump. Important note on these jack stands; instructions say weight rating is for a pair so each stand has a capacity of 3000 lbs , and I would keep way below that. With rear weight bias and when tilted rear jackstand will be as close as we want to get to capacity. Might not have been needed but put a dab of heavy grease on stand saddles because liftbar rotates as each side raised. Little stands 1 or 2 clicks from highest setting sump 17" from ground. I would never take a jack stand to max extension due to decrease in stability. Jack should only be raised a little on each side at a time, and the gap from small jack stand to large was too much, next time will have medium height jack stands to bridge the gap or think about two 2x10s under each little stand to raise them 3". Big jack stands on lowest setting 19 3/4" clearance. This is super stable major earthquake unlikely to wobble it. Trolley jack always rolls inwards or outwards when raising or lowering and when going higher starts moving more due to angle of arm so ensure no pavement cracks or anything impedes free movement, and jack pad and jack stand saddles will shift off center so we had to closely watch them and reposition to keep centered. Big jack stands extended two or three clicks, height from ground to sump 22 1/2". Jack could go about 3" higher, but we wouldn't take it much further as full extension decreases safety margin unacceptably. If we need more clearance maybe we will fabricate a wood block to fit over jack pad and have a U shape on top to ensure liftbar never slips off jack pad. That might be a good addition even if not needing additional lift. When raising vehicle it's supported in 4 places, when resting 6 supports of 60,000 lbs total capacity. This system probably lowest cost with sufficient safety margins to get 996 high enough for all underbody maintenance. Raising to low level for brake jobs etc. probably as fast and easy as Quckjack. Going higher you have to be on your game ensuring jack pad and stand saddles stay centered, and don't get complacent and try to speed up and lift one side much higher than the other, and once up on the 6 support points probably as safe or safer than the biggest post lifts set in deep reinforced concrete. System will be used on our other vehicles including 4x4 pickup by having built custom liftbar or some other method. If any incorrect information in this post please inform author and he will update.

POST 2Original post

I like it where did you get the lift bars from?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16294692

We got them from liftbars.com. I'm not aware of a similar product from another source, but have seen 1 or 2 home built ones. There are necessary features I can see like round area where jack saddle rests, and features I cannot see that make it safe and not damage 996 undercarriage, which would be hard to impossible to replicate at home.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16295098

Congrats on finding a low cost method to lift vehicle high enough to get engine out. If car prevented from rolling forward by lip on ramp or wall or other way, and two points of support added such as pair of bottle jacks on blocks of wood, then you have 6 points of support and it would be as safe or safer than any other lifting method. Post lifts and the many types of scissor jacks are only two points of support, unless jack stands are added which I will do if we ever get a post lift. There are jack stands for motorhomes and even houses that are as tall and have as much capacity as needed for any application.

POST 7Original post

^^^ You've got to be especially careful with the front wheels on ramps (chock the wheels on the ramps). I had mine roll off the front ramps when lifting from center rear (crossmember) with a trundle jack . Thank god I had room for the jack to roll back no harm no foul - but there certainly could have been...

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 16295358

The car was level when I dropped the motor and trans. I then lifted the rear to roll the motor out and took a quick pic, then set it level again. Obviously it all worked out just fine and I hope to not have to do it again (this way) any time soon.

POST 9Original post

If you can swing the additional cost, the Esco jack stands have a much safer locking mechainsm (steel pin through holes with a safety lynch pin). I used the style you have for many years, and they work fine. The Esco ones are just safer. You only need 4" of concrete for the Danmar movable 2 post lifts. I've had both the Maxjax and the MX-6 and they are amazing. Highly recommended if they are within your means and work with your floors. They're not perfect - they only lift 4' high - but are so much better than working under jack stands. It looks like your concrete is broken up, so that may not be an option for you, but for others with 4" of undamaged reinforced concrete it is a great option.

Thanks for useful information. I way prefer pin style jacks because on rachet type if inner pawl breaks (which is almost completely concealed) vehicle will come crashing down. I've seen pictures of wide-base high-reach heavy duty pin stands but didn't find any for sale, so settled for rachet type with 4 points of support while lifting and 6 points when in rest position. Most pictures and videos I see of raised vehicles they have only 4 points of support in resting position, and failure of one will allow vehicle to fall down and kill them. All they need to do is use jacks they already have to provide the additional support and safety margin. Maybe it's not cool to do that though. We seriously considered those and could have cut our concrete and poured new pads, and the 4' rise is way superior to liftbars 2', but we don't work under vehicle that often so extra rise and time needed to get there not a big drawback, and we hear posts can get in the way of opening doors and accessing side of vehicle when buffing/painting. Conclusion seems to be like with code readers; every choice involves compromises and to have all capability need two of each or partner with someone who has what we don't.

A group estimated 10,000 jack accidents a year, and even when there is a fatality the media almost never reports it. I only recall one reported it was here in California when a car fell on the owner during an earthquake. When I was a teen I went under a Chevelle supported only by a single jack on the differential, God was watching out for me then and many other uneducated things I did.

POST 12Original post

I use the same technique. The max lift height on the 12-ton HF jack stands is 30-inches. Combined with the lift bar (which adds about 3 inches) you can get the car almost 3 feet off the ground. Not quite as convenient as a lift, but a very affordable alternative. My total outlay was HF jack stands on sale at $100 per pair ($200) plus the long reach Daytona floor jack ($200) gets you to 24 inches. You need to use a wooden block to get the full 30-inch height but I've found that using a piece of 4x4 with the jack will get me to 28 that has been more than sufficient. Use a HF 20% coupon on the jack stands drops it by $40.

Sounds like we found almost the exact same conclusions. We use 2 long-reach jacks though to provide the critical safety third support on each side hence if any jack stand fails vehicle stays up, and so we don't have to roll the jack around and around the vehicle as each side is raised. We had 15% coupon for 2nd jack $170 small price to pay for safety and convenience. The least safe part of our system is the jack pad shifts off liftbar center. This is addressed by watching closely and repositioning jack, but maybe better to route out a wood block or cylinder to fit over the jack pad with a U-notch in the top matching shape of liftbar, which I think would lock jack and liftbar together and provide additional 3 to 4" of lift as the 4x4 you use. The next least safe part of our system is shifting from short 3-ton jack stands to tall 12-tons the gap is too large, next time I think just put one or two 2x12s under short stand and should be perfect. Chris did you have to position jack off liftbar middle to match vehicle center of gravity? We placed jack about midway between tape stripes as rear engine 996 wants the front wheels to come up much higher. 200th Post!

I thought about using these 30" RV scissor jacks with electric motors on them with custom lift bars. It would keep the car from moving around while jacking up due to jack arm angle. Also could be staggered about 1.5 feet fore and aft of weight center-line each side and bolted to lift bar to "lift both sides at once". Then lower onto jack stands. Amazon Amazon Amazon Amazon

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We looked at and considered RV scissors but every one had a disclaimer it was not for lifting only for support. Check the fine print maybe some are manufacturer recommended for lifting. Another jack we looked at I've only seen in Ford pickups in certain years like 1998; internally it must be a screw that raises in sections, has lots of real lift capability but I suspect shares a drawback with RV scissors stability where if load force isn't completely vertical possibility of tipping over. There must be tens of thousands of these in junkyards right now and if bolted or welded to a wide base to make stable might make a great low-cost option. Ford F150 and higher ratings factory lift jack.

Haven't seen this before, safe, low cost, and easy to store. Maybe adapter could be built to allow placement at cross beam or factory jack points and then wheel removal.

When I first found out we would all be telecommuting way back in the second week of March, I envisioned a life of leisure with occasional interruptions to get some bits of work done. The sad reality is that work is busier than I can ever remember. I'm afraid my lift-bar side business empire is going to have to wait a little longer.
