I ran a new cable from the charging post in the engine compartment to the alternator.

There are many posts on this forum for this problem, with many suggested fixes (replace starter, y-cable, clean electrical connections in junction box above tranny, etc.), but has anyone seen a diagnoses flow chart in order to diagnose the problem?
Leading evidence: 'Run cable' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean electrical connections in junction box above tranny, etc.)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Replacing the starter is all on top, and not quite as bad (except perhaps removing the alternator).

I've seen many posts for this problem where people replaced a bunch of parts which didn't fix the problem, but many of these posts never said how they eventually fixed the problem.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have this problem, that seems to be common with '99 cars. The starter turns over fine when the engine is cold. If I turn off the engine when it is fully warmed up, then try to restart the car, the starter turns for a fraction of a second then stops. If I let the car sit for five minutes, the starter turns over slowly, but usually long enough for the car to start. There are many posts on this forum for this problem, with many suggested fixes (replace starter, y-cable, clean electrical connections in junction box above tranny, etc.), but has anyone seen a diagnoses flow chart in order to diagnose the problem? I've seen many posts for this problem where people replaced a bunch of parts which didn't fix the problem, but many of these posts never said how they eventually fixed the problem. I'd like to learn from those experiences! Thanks.
not a flowchart but for sure start with evaluating the current state of your battery. There are instructions for evaluating voltage drop at the Y cable also.
Been there and done that. New starter fixed it all up. If your battery is fairly new (<4 years old) and the voltage charging is acceptable, the starter is the place to go.
Mine was primarily the starter. I say "primarily" because my Y cable had no corrosion whatsoever, but with the number of posts explaining the shortcomings of the cable itself (i.e. the crimping process and metal of the clamp itself), I chose to experiment. I ran a new cable from the charging post in the engine compartment to the alternator. It improved, but didn't eliminate the problem. Then I finally found a post where someone quite simply pointed out the amount of heat the starter is subjected to on a regular basis, and how likely it is that the resistance has built up within (ignoring technical details I don't remember and won't dare try to explain). It's similar to what could cause a problem in the crimped connections in the Y cable.
Anyway, a new Bosch starter from Rock Auto did not exceed my budgetary requirements, so I got one. HOLY S*** what a difference. It was immediately noticeable on a cold start, and no more problems on the thot start. So if your cable is corroded, replace it - but consider the age of the starter and replacing it too, or even first. If you read the threads about properly routing the Y cable, it's a lot of work. Replacing the starter is all on top, and not quite as bad (except perhaps removing the alternator).
