I took it to the dealer and they replaced the sunroof motor under CPO and now it works just fine.

My 99 C2 has done it as well & it seems to only happen if I try to close it on "rougher" roads or while turning with an elevation change (driveway for example).....maybe something to do with vibration fooling it into

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A few weeks back, with hot weather for the Pacific Northwest, ( 80F) my sunroof started acting a bit cranky. Gave it a quick push of the button for full auto retract but it stopped half way. Tried closing but it would only travel a couple of inches. Repeated 5 or 6 times with same result. Would travel different distances while trying to open or close but would not travel full distance. Took a drive, 15 minutes later no further issues. Anyone else experience similiar issues ???
Yeah - sometimes if I push the button and release it, mine stops mid way, then reverses and tries to open itself again...
When it does it the first time, it'll keep doing it when I push and release - until I finally just hold the button down and force the stubborn thing.
Same here, sometime on close, it closes 2/3rd of the way and opens again.
(also in the Pacific Northwest..)
Maybe time to grease the cables and/or rails..
99 C2
Same issue here in NC. It only seems to occur after the car sits outside for a while. It never happens first thing in the morning when pulling the car out of the garage.
Maybe its MK1 and heat/humidity related?
I seem to recall that there's an electronic module along with the motor... things like that are prone to getting moisture in them.
I'll see if I can take a picture - I'm surprised how many people have the same problem. Maybe someone can write up a little lube procedure, too.

thinking there is an obstruction is what I had been thinking.
On smooth roads it has never happened that I recall.
Mine does the same thing, just goes 3/4 and opens again, I have to "help" the damn thing close with my hand, holding the button doesn't work. I've looked but seen nothing obstructing. I would take it to the stealer , but ehhh they steal!
I just started to have problems with mine on an 04 C2. At first thought is seems like the switch as I am frequently getting no response from the switch and also notice that when holding the switch to close the roof after the roof closes it continuies and tilts up. The center button is not working for the tilt. And I do have the issue of the roof either not closing or reversing itself while closing and then opening again. Anyone have any thoughts if this could be the switch or just a lubrication issue?
Thanks
it must be an epidemic...happened to me as well this past weekend for the first time.
came back home. hit the button to close it and went in to my house. came out next morning and the sunroof was open. Took several tries and some help pushing to get it to close.
Mine will reopen as if it found an obstruction half the time. Usually one more push and it is ok. It works better if it starts to close when fully open, if part way open it almost always happens.
Well, good news bad news. The dealer installed a new sunroof switch under CPO warranty. Bad news is the problem still exists. They now think it might be the motor so it goes back in tomorrow morning.
I hate being with out my p-car!
Also, the dealer did a great job on nearly eliminating all interior rattles and exhaust rattles, and at no charge under CPO. I am ever more grateful that I paid the piper for a CPO car.
I'll post an update on the sunroof after this visit to the dealer.
I picked up the car this evening and it is a pleasure! Sunroof works perfectly including the one touch operation. No more mind of it's own opening and closing, just this precision feel and sound of the roof operating. Sunroof motor replaced and fully covered under CPO warranty. I have to say that it was SWEET to read the details of the work, including the disassembly and reassembly of the dash and door panel to fix the rattles and then to see a charge for a grand total of $00.00!
Since I am so quick to complain about lousy service I need to give them a big thumbs up this time around for a great job and for treating me in a really nice way.
I used a white lithium grease a while back (date is posted in this thead) and the problem went away until a few months ago. It started failing again, very occasionally but I expect it will get worse.
So while lithium isn't the answer.
