Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 1999 coupe has 94K miles. Last week installed a set of Bilsteins, upper strut mount, and other rubber related shock front shock parts. Additionally, changed the control arms, stabilizer links, etc. This morning I noticed a clunking noise up front at slow speed over bumps and am wondering if I did not tighten the top center strut nut enough. The previous OEM shock had about 3/4 inch of thread showing. Did I not tighten center nut enough, and spring etc are loose?

POST 2Original post

You are at the car and are in the best position to answer that. Barring you incorrectly installed something, say didn't get a spring in right, or made a mistake with installing the compensator disc, then you left something loose or failed to proper torque some thing down. You have to go back and check your work.

POST 3Original post

You did not tighten the center strut nut enough. Should be a lot more of the threads showing. You might be able to tighten them from above. Make sure from underneath the springs are located correctly on the strut tower. You will have to hold the strut piston with the correct size key, then tighten the nut. I think to around 70-80 ft lbs torque.
