If my car is a 1999, and has the 1-button key head, can I use a 2-button key head to replace it, just to have the basic lock/unlock functionality?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys. Seems my keys for my 996 do not have the internal circuit boards inside them, as if someone removed them at some point. Not sure if maybe my 996 does not have a factory alarm system? But, just in case, I'd like to find if anyone is selling (or knows where to find) the circuit board that goes inside the 996 key (where the remote battery snaps into). Thanks...

POST 2Original post

Not sure if you can use remote units from another car without coding those to your immobilizer. New keyheads can be found from dealer, ebay, etc.

POST 3Original post

Any new keyhead or keyhead circuit will need reprogramming from the dealer or someone with PST2 or Piwis

Did you buy the car from the same guy who sold me my car? 'cause one of my key head was missing the internal circuit board too, but the seller didn't disclose that, he only said "one of the key does not work" which I suppose it's technically correct, but I thought all it probably needed was a new battery, imagine my surprise when I opened the key head and found no circuit board inside...., I'm sure he or his wife put the key through laundry and just took the circuit board out afterwards, circuit board doesn't go missing by itself. As others said the circuit board has to be programmed to match the car, and it must come with the code tag for the Porsche dealer to program it.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What is a Code Tag? If I buy a used 996 key on Ebay, and swap the circuit board into my key head, will the Porsche dealer still be able to program it?

POST 6Original post

A code tag is an unique long string of numbers and characters specifically keyed to each circuit board, this code is entered into the Porsche dealership electronic diagnostic device which then pairs the key to your car. DO NOT buy a key head from anyone or anywhere if it didn't come with a key tag, else you would be throwing money down the drain. Have a look at the Parts Marketplace forum, I saw an ad earlier from someone selling a key head with the tag, so you can see what it looks like.

The internal circuit board is not needed to start the engine. The RFID pill that is installed in the module head is used by the car's security system to allow the engine to start/run. The circuit board is just there to transmit an RF signal to unlock or lock the doors and unlock the front and rear lids whenever one of the buttons on the module head is pressed. The boards are not available separately. IIRC one can buy a new key module head with a new circuit board and move the key blade from the old key to the new key. (Or check with the parts department at your local dealer: I believe one can order a complete key with a new blade that is pre-cut to fit the car's lock. There are just a few different blade patterns.) The dealer or a good indy shop with a proper Porsche diagnostic computer can remove the old/unused key ID's and introduce the ID's from the new key modules from the car's security controller. The old key ID's have to or should be removed as the table for key ID's is small and unused ID's take up valuable space.

POST 9Original post

I have a key fob from a key/immo/dme swap. It has a functioning PCB. As has been mentioned, I believe you will have to get it programmed to pair with the radio in your immobilizer. If you're interested, PM me.

POST 10Original post

You will need something like this remote head with the code. The dealer will not be able to program the head to your car without the code. It takes about 15 minutes, the dealer will charge you 1 hour labor. Some dealers will program the head for "free" if you buy it from them, probably for ~$250+. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-Carr...90aff7&vxp=mtr

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If my car is a 1999, and has the 1-button key head, can I use a 2-button key head to replace it, just to have the basic lock/unlock functionality? Or do I need to stick with a 1 button key head?

POST 12Original post

I think a two button head will work. The second button just won't do anything. I know a three button head will work on a two button car. Call Sunset Porsche [phone removed] and ask. They give a very good discount to Rennlist members. Also Suncoast Porsche, right in your backyard, gives discount to Rennlist folks. POST 13Original post

You need to buy a one button key head with circuit board in it with a tag. You can then buy a 2 button remote and swap the internals if you want. I you are looking for keys the cheapest place I found was on ebay but I think Suncoast comes close. On ebay its $176. Make sure you get the key for the 98-00, one button. You can then swap out the blade portion and take to dealer to get programmed. They charged me $40 to program 3 keys. This is the correct link if you are interested http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-Genu...590178&vxp=mtr
